WILLIAM H, PHINNEY, ()F PAWTUCKET, RHODE ISLAND.
Letters Patent 106,869, dated August 30, 1870.
mrnovnmnn'r m'scALns ron SHOWING WEEGH'I AND Pawn.
The Schedule referred to in the" Letters Patent and making part of the same.
ratns for Determining the "Weight and Value of Articles; anvil do hereby declare the some to he fuliy described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawing, of pinch,
Figure 1' is a 'i'ront elevation; Figure 2, a transverse section; and Figure 3, a. longitudinal section of such apparatus. Figure 4 is (1 front elevation of the valuation cylinders separated from the'cnse of the apparatus. In such Eil'dWlllg- A-dbnotes the said case as composed of a drum, a, and a hollow or chambered arm, b, extending upward from and openinginto such druln.-. v
, There are one or more slots, 0 0, made through the front of the drum, and formed trapezoidal, in transversc section, there being a. scale, C, on the lower side of eachslot.
This scaleis divided into equal parts, each having a. designating number upon is, us represented.
Within the drum'the're are arranged two cylinders,
1) 1), whose lengths correspond very nearly, if not exactly, with those ofthe two slots.
They are disposed opposite the slots, and havea. gear ortoothed pinion, E, disposed between them, and fixed to them or their common axis or shaft.
-A slotted bur, F, applied to the case, so as to be capable of movingfvertically therein and out; of the hottonr'oi' the drum, has a rack oriscries, G, of teeth,
to engage with the said pinion.
The bar F depends from a. helicni spring, H, arranged within the cusennd suspended from its upper part, in monneras represented.
A hook, I, applied to the lower url; of the slotted and root-lied bur F, serves to enable an ariioie to he weighedand valued to be connected with the bar.
The two cylinders'are divided lengthwise on their; peripheries by a series of lines, extending around them, and being at equal distances apart, they being in number corresponding to t-he divisions the weight scale.
The said cylinders are niso otherwise divided, viz., by 2.: series of straighnlines crossing the circles or ii visions before mentioned, and arranged parniiei to one another, and as or ohouf; at equal distances apart.
We will suppose that the parallel straighia' lines mark the arcs of revoiniion of she cylinders, csused by dine-rentweights being upon the hook I, that is, we will suppose shat every additional queries n pound applied to the hook shall cause. she cylinders or barrels to revolve one their arcs of divisions, vtherefore we should number the said ares 0%, 5;, i, 1i,
and so on.
'piyiug such weigh?) Opposite each of suolrnumbers we mark the transverse divisions of the drumor drums with figures corresponding to the products resulting from muitiplying the starting number by numbers of the scale 0, indicative of the divisions.
Their members for the space marked would be 1}, i}, 1;}, 11}, 2, and so on, the Whole being as represlanted in the ire-win Ii ow, snpcose desire to liscersn'iu the we 5, value or an article, we have only to hang it; on the hook, which, being accomplished, the draft on the bar F wiii cause ihe blnto descend uniil stopped by the spring, the barrel or cylinders, in the meantime, being revolved, so as to indicatethe weight at the raglan half sounds, we should find on the drnm, direc2ly m;-
posite the mark 10 of the scale C, the number illdies-rive of mine of the weight.
Thus, itwill be seen that, at n. ginuce the price on the scale C, and at the number that on the drum may he nexito the girioe, ws shall have the value of any iii'biC-iij suspended from the hook.
The apparatus wili be found very conveni tradesmen, especially for butchers and vendor. stables and ii-uitswho, by means of iii he the necessity of 1 certuining the weighs no articie, endows g ough the oi multiy one price per pound. or suns", the drum umber which may be next opposite sriee number will indicaiie the value.
A surul index-pointer, K. arranged on. ine of one end of'the slot of drum serves t when any circular division of ihe' weighs have reached its proper position.
