Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 22, 1913.
Application filed. October 1, 1910. Serial No. 584,937.
To aZZ tic/10m it may concern Be it known that l, CLYDE C. Lownu, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ashton, in the county of Spink and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Engine Speedliegulators; and I do hereby declare the fol: lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in governor attachments for steam engines or the like.
An object of this invention is the provision of a device of this character whereby the valve rod of the governor can be operated and held in a fixed position, for the purpose of loading or unloading the governor and thereby re ulating the speed of the engme.
Another object of this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and efficient in use, and readily operated.
iVith the above and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of an engine illustrating my invention applied to the governor thereof; Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the attachment removed; and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the tension springs.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates generally a portion of an engine, upon which is mounted the usual governor 2, consisting of the casing 3, in which is vertically mounted the valve rod 4;, being operated by means of the customary fly balls 5.
The portion of the valve rod within the casing is of the usual construction and carries the customary grooved disk 6, adapted to engage the inwardly projecting portion 7 of a rocker arm 8 mounted in a bracket 9 located upon the outside of the casing 3. A flexible connecting member 10 is secured to one end of the rocker arm 8 and passes over a pulley 11 mounted upon the further side of a quadrant 12 secured to a suitable sta tionary t art of the engine within convenient reach of the operator.
A hand lever 18 is pivoted as at 14;, to an upwardly extending lug 15 carried centrally of the plate 16, which supports the quadrant 1.2, and is held in a fixed position by means of a spring actuated locking pawl 17, slid.- ably mounted upon the said lever and adapted to engage the notches or teeth 18 formed in the upper edge of the quadrant 12. A suitable handpiece 19 is pivoted, as at 20, to the upper end of the lever 13, and is adapted to be connected with the upper end of the pawl 17, for the purpose of operating the same into and out of engagement with the teeth 18. A flexible member 21 is secured to one of a series of apertures 22 formed in one edge of the lower end of the lever 13, and is connected at its opposite end to the lower end of the rocker arm 8. A series of tension springs 23 are connected to the inner ends of the flexible member 21 to provide a yielding connection between the before mentioned rocker arm 8 and lever 13.
The opposite end of the flexible member 10 to the one which is connected to the rocker arm 8, after passing over the pulley 11, is secured to one of a series of apertures 24: formed in the rear edge of the lower end of the lever 13.
From the foregoing disclosures, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be manifest that an attachment for governors is provided for which will fulfil all of the necessary requirements of such a device.
Having thus fully described this invention, what I claim as new and desire to prot-ect by Letters Patent is:
The combination with a governor com.- prising a rocker arm having two ends, of a plate, a segmentmounted upon said plate, a lever mounted upon said plate and co-acting with said segment, a pulley secured to said In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two wltnesses.
CLYDE C. LOWER.
segment, flexible members each attached to One end of the rocker arm and to the lever, one of said flexible members passing through said pulley, and a resilient element consisting of helical springs connect-ed. by interlocking U-shaped members interposed in one 01" said flexible members,
