The leg Q5 of the bnr provides e guide and cover for the free edge of the door when in closed position. The other side of' lthe deer-opening is bounded by a channel Q6, one leg of the channel projecting out beyond the plane of the 22, ns shown in Fig. S, and providing o. pocket within which the rear edge of the door: is held, :is will be later described. it will noted thet hy this construction the door inny be mounted and' moved et all times in n plane within the cnr-walls, and need not project outside of the wells, es is customary.
i have noticed that in many cases doors and their fastening mechanisms dannged by Contact with exterior objects, either when the car is nioving or when on a siding, and to obviete much of this damage, 3rovide guards or fenders' at top and bottom. The top guardis composed or the Z-bnr 27 secured at 255 to the upper sill of the cnr, und being filled with wood Q9, il'. desired. At. the bottom the tender is comprised in the plate 19, :i block otq wood 30 being sented between the overhanging end Q0 and the well of the The ends of both upper and lower tenders ere curved, as shown inv Figs. 7 and Q.
The novel door of my .invention is coniposed of a plate 31 having upper and lower wickets or small door openings, and
eing corrugated as at 32 nt its middle portion. This corrun'etion provides the necessary strength .end rigidity to the door. The door is provided on its bottoni margin with a Z-bar 33, within which is mounted a plurality of rollers which ride on 'the track Il and support the door. .fit its upper margin en angle is secured, the free lee; or' the angle riding in the overhung edge of the .7i-bar 18, thus sealing the top ot the door and at the seme time permitting it to slide freely. The side edges of the door are provided with smell channels 36, while at the rear edge e. second channel 37 is provided, one leg 3S oi: which seats behind thelee' of the channei 26 when the door is fully closed. Thus n perfect seal is provided. The wickets in the door ere closed by suitable swinging-doors 39, 4:0, the npper door being hinged on e shaft di und adapted to swing downwardly, while' the door 40 is hinged on n shaft 42 and is adepted to swing upwardly. These doors are preferably constructed of metal and have their edges headed or otherwise strengthened, es shown. The upper door is secnred by Ineens of a shaft d3 having an angular middle portion d4: adapted to be proiccted into the path of un ongle 1.75 securer to the "free edge of the door.
\:\:hnit provided with un arm lli to *lis connected e. rod 47 projectingl fr @essere wardly and having; un offset end-portion 48. This end-portion is adapted to he held by a keeper di), with ineens for lockinga or sealing,l es is usuel. The end 4S of the rod is adapted also to sent in the oiturcated upper end of e rocker 51, which rocker'is secured to an odset shaft 52. rhis shaft ebnts against the lower free edge of the door al0' and holds saine in closed ppsition. The rocker 5i may be held in closed position by means ot n pin adapted to be passed through :in eer on the lree er 49.
The rod is held in lowermost position by ineens of n. pin 54%. passed therethrough. It will be noted that the rod extends through the legs of angles 56 arranged at top nnd bottoni or the corrugated portion of the door. These angles serve to further stilien the door, es well :is hold the lockingrod in proper posit-ion.
The latch for the main door host shown in Figs. l and :ind comprises pivoted lever 57, having' an extension or projection 58 thereon. This lever is mounted in n housingT 59 bolted to the side. ot the door. The upper end of the lever 57 is hituroated and is adapted to accommodate :in integral pin 60 projecting from the rod 47. Thus, it will he eeen that on removal of the pin oil 'the rod i7 he lifted out'of engage- `inent first with the lever 57, then the keeper ,e9 and then the lever 51. While in this position the latch for the door mcy be moved and the door swung open, or the pin 53 may be removed and the lower door opened, or the upper .door alone may be opened, the rod 47 controlling;w the fiction of all the fastening-devices.
The fender 'feature of this invention is claimed in this application only in the partisular relation to the door and the recessed partof' the cnr wall, :is shown und described in this application, while the fender invent-ion per se is claimed in my companion application Serial No. 741,030, filed Jnnary 9, 1913.
A cer constructed in accordance with. my invention will be found to be durable in service, grain tight nt all times, and to event the entrance of ruin or snow. ie use of the fenders or guard-rails o-.ercomes the danger oit domage under ordinnry circumstances.
llfioditicotions in tho construction muy be made, and such modifications as nre within the scope of Iny claims, I consider within the spirit ot my invention.
