DAVID T. BODLE, OF GAYLORD, KANSAS.
CHAFFING-SCREEN.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID T. Room, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gaylord, in the county of Smith and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful lmproven'ients in Chafing-Screens, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to threshing machines, and it has particular reference to a chatling screen of simple and improved construction.
One object of the invention is to provide a chatting screen having a plurality of narrow channels separated by upstanding wall .lllOll'lbGl'S, and each of said channels being provided with slots and with downwardly extending deflectors, the object being to facilitate and improve the separation of grain from the broken straw and heads constituting the relatively heavy portions that are separated from the light straw as the latter passes over the straw rack to the straw carrier whereby it is expelled at the tail end of the machine, the material to be operated upon being directed into the longitudinal channels between the upstanding walls, whereby said material is distributed over the entire area of the screen, being thus effectively subjected to the air currents coming from the fan.
A further object of the invention is to simplify and improve the construction of the chatting screen.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
in the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modification within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawings,Figure 1 is a plan View of a portion of a chailing screen constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, enlarged, taken on the line 22 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, enlarged, taken on the line 33 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspec- Specification of Letters Patent.

tive detail view showing a portion of one of the members or units used in the construction of the screen and showing also portions of adjacent units, parts being broken away to clearly show the construction. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of a portion of the screen.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The frame of the improved screen is composed of cross bars 1, 1 upon which the upstanding side members 2, 2 are suitably secured, said frame being constructed of wood or other suitable material.
The screen proper is composed of a plurality of units A, each of said units consisting of a strip of sheet metal having upturned side edges 3, 3 so to constitute an elongated trough or channel. The side edges or wall members 3, 3 are beveled at their front ends, as shown at a, and the side Ill01l'l her 3 of each unit is provided at its upper edge and at its front end with downturned flanges 5 and overlapping the upper edge of the wall member 8 of the adjacent proximate unit, the units being secured together by any suitable fastening means, such as rivets 6, extending through the flange portions 5 of the units 3 and through the portions of the wall members 3 engaged by said flange portions. The units A may in prac tice be made of a width of approximately two inches, and the upstanding wall mem bers may be of a height of one and a half inches, any suitable number of units being employed to produce a screen of the desired width. The outer wall members of the units at the side edges of the screen may be suitably trimmed and secured upon the upstanding side members 2 of the screen frame, the cross bars of which support the front and rear ends of the units which may be secured thereon in any suitable manner. The bottom of each unit is provided with angular slots forming tongues 7 which are bent or deflected downwardly at any desired angle to insure the most eilicient operation of the device.
In operation, the improved chatting screen is supported in the casing of a threshing machine adjacent to the grain pan and also in rear of and below the straw rack in such a position as to receive the relatively heavy material discharged over the straw rack and which includes broken straw to which grain adheres and broken heads having grain adhering thereto. This material when dropping upon the chafling screen will be broken up by the upstanding ridges or wall members as it drops into the grooves or channels formed by the units of which the screen is made up. The material will thus be effectively subjected to the blast coming from the fan, the grain being separated from the straw and heads so that the kernels will slide down the inclined tongues and drop upon the grain bottom, while the remaining material is carried rearwardly over the screen, it being understood that the screen is to be hung or supported in such a manner as to receive a shaking motion, as is usually the case. The material may be discharged over the chafling screen to the tailings spout, or an intermediate tailings screen may be 'used, if desired, such tailings screen being constructed in like manner as the chatting screen, but supported in such a manner as to be inclined in the direction of the tailings spout.
Important advantages of the particular construction of the screen as herein shown and described are, first, that the screen being composed of a plurality of units, the said units may be used for building up a screen of any desired width to fit any particular make of grain separator that may be desired; second, in the event of injury to the screen, such injury may usually be repaired by removing and replacing a single unit. It will, furthermore, be found that where the units are joined together, the flange associated with the side wall of one unit will overhang and partly envelop the side wall of the proximate unit, thereby forming a reinforced and very durable construction.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a chatting screen, a screen unit consisting of a channel-shaped piece of sheet metal having upstanding side members, one of which is provided with a downturned flange, said unit being provided with bottom slots and downwardly deflected tongues.
2. In a ehafling screen, a screen unit consisting of a channel-shaped piece of sheetmetal having upstanding side walls beveled at their front ends, one of said wall members being provided with downturned flanges at its upper and front ends, and the bottom of the unit being provided with slots and with downwardly deflected tongues.
3. A chatting screen made up of a plurality of integral units of similar construction connected together along their proximate longitudinal edges.
4:. A chatting screen including a plurality of channel-shaped units having upstanding side walls, one side wall of each unit being provided with a downturned flange engaging the side wall of a proximate unit.
A chafling screen including a plurality of channel-shaped units having upstanding wall members beveled at their front ends, one wall member of each unit being pro vided with downturned flanges engaging and secured upon a wall member of a proximate unit.
6. A chafling screen comprising a frame including front and rear cross bars and upstanding side members secured thereon, and a plurality of channel-shaped units mounted upon the front and rear cross bars and having upstanding wall members suitably connected together, the outermost wall mem ber of the units adjacent to the side members of the frame being suitably trimmed and secured upon said side members, and the bottom of each channel-shaped unit being provided with slots and with downwardly deflected tongues.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
