Be it known that l, HARRY lll. Dunn Ysrrinn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chambersburg, Franklin county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in llropwllaminer Rolllelease Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
@ne object of my invention is to provide ii'nproved mechanism for controlling the roll release of a drop hammer and relieving the shock of impact between the moving ram of the hammer and the adjustment release lever; it being especially desired that the point at which the rolls shall be caused to release the lifting boards may be nely adjusted.
l further desire to provide roll release mechanism having the above characteristics, which shall be relatively simple and substantial as well as efficient under operating conditions, and conveniently adjustable.
These objects and other advantageous ends l secure as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a front elevation of a portion of a drop hammer illustrating my invention as applied thereto; Fig. 2, is a hori- Zontal section of the structure shown in Fig. 1, and F ig. 3, is a side elevation of the hammer.
ln the above drawings 1 represents a portion of the hammer frame which is provided with guides for a ram 2 having lifting boards 3. Attached to the frame in any suitable manner is a vertically extending rack l designed to cooperate with properly formed teeth of a segment 5 forming part of the adjustment release lever G. This latter is provided with a cavity for the reception of a pin or trunnion 'T forming part of a trunion bracket 8 which is adjustably mounted on a lifting rod 9. rlllhis latter cxw tends vertically alongside of the frame of the hammer and is directed in its movement by a guide 15 movably carried by the frame as hereafter noted. The trunnion bracket may be rigidly held to the lifting rod 9 in any given position by clamping bolts 11 and is kept from turning on said rod by means of a key 12.

movement of the ram which has a pin 13 mounted on it in such position as to strike and turn the lever 6 on the fulcruni formed by the rack 4; it being noted that said lift ing rod and with it the trunion bracket 8, are free to move outwardly away from the adjustment release lever; said pin 7 sliding longitudinally in the cavity of said lever for this purpose.
The lower portion of the lifting rod 9 passes through the end 1.4L of a rod guide 15 which is provided with a head 1G operative in a cavity of the frame and is acted on by a spring 17, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, in such manner that it, and consequently the lifting .rod 9, are normally drawn toward the frame Ll.. Below this rod 15 the frame is formed with a shelf or abutment 18 for the support of the lower end of the lifting rod 9 when this latter has been raised to a. certain point and d 1awn inwardly by the action of the spring 17. Also clamped to the lifting rod 9 is a knock off dog 10, there being provided bolts 10a whereby this dog may be clamped in any desired position. rlhe rain 2 is provided with an inclined surface 20 so placed as to engage the knock olf dog l0 when said ram falls, to move outwardly the lower portion of the lifting rod 9 and thereby push its lower extremity olii' of the shelf 18.
rit the upper portion of Fig. 3, l l ave indicated more or less diagrammatically the various well known portions of a drop hammer lifting means and of these have illustrated the board 'clamps 21, the lifting rolls and the liftingl boards 3; there being an operating treadle 23 pivoted to the lower portion ot the frame and connected to the mechanism at the upper portion of the hammer by means of a rod 2lillt ith this arrangement of parts the trunnion bracket 8 may be adjusted to any desired position on the lifting rod 9, the adjustment release lever (i turning on the pin 7 of this bracket under the action of the rack 4t on its toothed segment 5 which shortly rolls out of engagement with said rack. After being brought to the desired position, with the lever in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the bracket is clamped to the rod by tightening the bolts 11.
Thereafter if the hammer be put in operation by a depression of the treadle 23, the
ram 2 will be raised by the action of the lifting` rolls 22 on the lifting boards 3. Said ram in its upward movement will finally reach a point at which its projecting pin 13 will strike the long arm of the adjustment release lever G and while turning this on the pivot pin 7 of the trunnion bracket S, will cause an upward movement of the lifting rod 9 by reason of the rolling of the toothed segment on the rack 4. This upward movement of the rod 9 shortly causes the rolls 22 to release the lifting boards 3 so that the ram drops, although said rod 9 remains in its elevated position owing to the fact that its lower end, under the action of the spring 17 on the rod guide 14.-15, was pulled inwardly so as to rest upon the shelf 18. As the ram reaches aV predetermined point at the lower part of its stroke its inclined surface 20strikes the knock off dog 10, pushing itl with the lower end of the lifting rod 9 outwardly, so that said rod is no longer supported by the shelf 1S, it being noted that the pin 7 of the trunnion bracket S moves longitudinally in the adjustmentrelease lever 6 to permit of this action. r1`he weight of the lifting rod with its attached parts immediately thereafter causes it to drop to its lower position and likewise causes the adjustment release lever 6 to move from the position shown in full lines to that shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. At the same time the dropping of the lifting rod so actuates the eccentrics of the lifting rolls 22 that. these latter grip the lifting boards, and again raise the ram as heretofore described.
From the above it will be noted that it is possible to adjust the point at which the rolls release the lifting boards of the ram with the utmost nicety and it is also evidentv that the shock of the impact between the moving ram and the adjustment release lever is reduced to a minimum. The ram can thus be adjusted to drop at any predetermined point in its upward stroke and it is noted that the adjustment release lever moves upwardly with the ram after being engaged by the pin thereof and fulcrums on the teeth of the rack in so doing.
t will thus be noted that the adjustable release lever has no fixed point of support but moves upwardly with the ram by fulcruming on the segmental teeth of the rack, so that the center of rotation of said lever may be at any place on the rod 9. For this reason a much finer range of adjustment may be secured than has hitherto been obtainable and it is the device for securing this most desirable end that constitutes one of the features of my invention.
The trunnion bracket 8 may be shifted up or down the rod 9 with the greatest ease and rapidity when the teeth of the adjustment release lever are disengaged from the rack, although for a small adjustment it is not essential that the teeth should be so disengaged. Since the trunnion bracket S is at some distance from the point of engagement of the pin 13 with the adjustment release lever G and since the rack L1 acts as a fulcrum, the movement of the lifting rod after the pin 13 of the ram has engaged said lever, is relatively less than that of the ram, depending upon the design and proportioning of the parts, which it is obvious, may be varied within any desired limits without departing from my invention.
lVith the arrangement described, the ram automatically releases the rolls 22 from the lifting boards in making its upward stroke, when its pin 13 has moved the adjustment release lever a predetermined distance, so that in addition to being adjustable the release is automatic.

The combination in roll release mechanism for drop hammers of a frame; a ram; a release rod; means for supporting said rod in an elevated position, a member connected to said rod so as to be engaged by the ram and havingy a toothed segment; with a rack placed on the frame in position for the teeth of said segment to roll upon them.
2. 1n roll release mechanism for drop hammers the combination of a frame; a ram; a release rod; means for supporting said rody in an elevated position, a lever mounted on the rod in position to be turned by the ram and provided with a toothed portion; with al iiXed st-ructure having teeth placed to be rolled over by the toothed portion of said lever.
