rlhis invention relates to cotton-seed delinters, and has tor its object to provide a .machine ot the character described that is jni'iniarily intended for removing` troni cotton-seed all the fibers and lint which remain adhering' thereto after the grinning? operation, though capable, of course, of use t'or siinilar purposes in the treatmentoit objects other than cotton-seed.
Another object oit the present invention is to provide a machine having a delinting chainber in which the seeds or other objects to be delinted are d elinted and agitated therein solely by the delinting` nicans, thereby obviating the use ot separate ineens for agitating` saine.
Farther, the present invention consists ot' the novel il'features et construction and arrangements ot parts, as will be hereinafter incre fully described and pointed out in the. claims.

An inlet spout 19 communicates with one end of the delinting chamber 12 through an opening 20 in the head 4 at one end of the machine, and a discharge spout 21 communicates with the other end of the delinting chamber 12 through an opening 22 in the other head 4, said openings 2O and 22 being surrounded by flanges 23 borne by said heads 4. The shaft 17 extends through the inletspout 19 and bears on Archimedean screw 24, or the like, which is adapted to rotate with said shaft, in order to feed the seeds from said spout 19 into the delintingchamber 12 through the opening 20. Said shaft 17 extends, also, through the discharge spout 21 and has a valve 25 reciprocatively mounted thereon for the purpose of controlling the passage of theA delinted seeds through the opening 22 from the delinting chamber 12 into the discharge spout 21, said valve being preferably disk-shaped and being substantially the same size and having the same shape as the opening 22. A sleeve 26 borne by valve 25 encircles shaft 17 and contains a screw-threaded opening 27 to receive a bolt or screw 28. Said bolt or screw 2S is preferably screw-threaded only along a portion of its length, in order to fit in the screwthreaded opening 27 in sleeve 2G, and the end portion of said bolt or screw is left smooth and extends through an elongated slot 29 in shaft 17, which slot communicates with an opening 30 that extends longitudinally in the end of said shaft 17. The end of the bolt or screw 28 projects from the slot 29 into an opening 31 in valve-stem 32, as best seen in Fig. S, the latter being located within the opening 30 in shaft 17 and being capable of reciprocating longitudinally therein. By reason of valve 25 and its stem 32 being connected by the bolt or screw 2S, as just described, same are caused to rotate with. shaft 17, and whenever the valve 25 is moved longitudinally on shaft- 17, the bolt or screw 2S causes the stem 32 to move with said valve, or vice versa. The stem 32 extends from the end of shaft 17 and the end thereof bears against the end of a screwthreaded rod 33, which passes through a screw-threaded opening in bracket 34, said bracket being secured to one of the bearings 18 by a set-screw or other suitable means, and said rod having a hand-wheel 8G secured thereto to afford a means for turning same. The seeds within the delinting chamber 12 p 1ess against the face of valve 25 and thereby tend to move said valve away from the opening 22, in order to allow the delinted seeds to pass from the delinting chamber 12 into the discharge spout 21. Such movement of valve 25 is limited by the engagement of its stem 32 with the end of rod 33, and by means of said rod the valve 25 can be adjusted with respect to the opening 22, in order to allow the delinted seeds to discharge faster or slower from the delinting chamber 12, as may be desired. Said discharge spout. 21 is provided with a sighthole 37 through which the interior of said spout can be observed from outside the machine. rllhe delinted seeds discharge from the spout 21 into suitable receptacle or conveyinor means (not shown).
A hollow member 38 surrounds the shaft 17 'within the delinting chamber 12 and extends from end to end of said chamber, one end of said member terminating within the openino` 2O and the other end thereof terminating within the opening Each end of member 3S is preferably tapered, so as to leave a space between same and the flange 23 surrounding same, and is provided with a lug 39 or a plurality of such lugs, each of said lugs being bolted or otherwise secured to said flange, in order to hold the member 38 stationary. Said member 38 is provided externally with a plurality of flutes or furrows 40, which extend longitudinally thereof. rThe flutes or furrows 40 in member 38 are preferably equal in number to the delinting cylinders 9 and are substantially' concentric to said cylinders. Said flutes 40 divide the delinting chamber 12 into a plurality of compartments 41 and hold the seeds in engagement with the delinting cylinders 9. Each compartment 41 in the delinting chamber 12 communicates with the adjacent compartments 41 so that the seeds can pass from one compartment to another.
Vhile, for the purpose of illustration, the delinter depicted in the drawings is equipped with four delinting cylinders 9 and four staves 11, yet, it should be understood that either a greater or a smaller number of cylinders 9 and a corresponding greater or smaller number of staves 11 may be used, if so desired. Then four cylinders 9 are used, same are preferably located at substantially equal distances apart, two of said cylinders being dispos-ed on substantially the same level and being located directly above the other two cylinders, respectively, as clearly shown in F ig. 8. rl`he staves 11 are located between the cylinders 9, in order to retain the seeds in the delinting chamber 12,.one of said staves being arranged to close the top, another to close the bottom, and the other two to close the sides of said delinting chamber. rllhe staves 11 at the sides of the chamber 12 are preferably located farther away from the member 38 than the upper and lower staves 11, so that said chamber is relatively greater in width than in height and, also, so that the com- Lasarte 1 pertinents 41 communicate through a larger space at the sides of the chamber 1Q than at the top and bottom ot said chamber. By this arrangement the body oit seeds at each side of the chamber 1Q is subjected simultaneously to the action et an upper and a lower cylinder 9, with the result that said cylinders increase the agitation ot' the seeds, when the seeds pass from an upper compaitw ment 41 into a lower compartment 41 at one side of the chamber 12 or when saine pass from a lower compartment 41 into an upper compartment 41 at the other side ot said chamber.
Each stare 11 is preferably formed ot a plate, which may be secured to a bar 42 by bolts 43 or other suitable means, as depicted in Figs. 10 and 11, or, if desired, said stave or plate 11 may be formed integrally with said bar. Said bar 42 extends from end to end ot the machine, and has its ends supported in pillow-blocks 44 borne by heads 4, respectively. A cap 45 on each pillow-block is held in place thereon by bolts 46 or the like, and, in turn, holds the end et bar 42 lirmly in said pillow-block, so as to hold the stave 11 stationary. This arrangement allows the stares 11 to be readily adjusted, when the bolts 4G are loosened. A blade 47, which extends longitudinally oli the stave 11, is preferably riveted er otherwise secured to the inner tace oit said stave, i. e., the tace that is exposed to the dclinting chamber 12, and a plate 48, which, also, extends longitudinally. of said stare, is tas tened to the outer tace of said stave by screws or bolts 49. Each stave 11 occupies an inclined position, and is so adjusted, as hereinabove described, that the beveled edge 51 ot its blade 4'? nearly touches the teeth 14 on an adjacent delinting cylinder 9, so as to deflect the seeds from said roller, and its plate 4S is adjusted, as hereinabove described, so that an edge thereof nearly touches the teeth 14 oit another cylinder 9 adj aeent thereto, in order to prevent the seeds from falling out of the chamber 12, said cylinders 9 being rotated so that the cylinder adjacent the blade 4T moves the seeds toward said blade, and the cylinder adjacent the plate 48 moves the seeds away vfrom said plate.
A shaft 52 is preferably arranged to ex tend 'from end to end of the machine and is journaled in a bearing borne by one o'l the heads 4 and, also, in a bracket 54, which is bolted or otherwise secured to the other head 4, being located above the upper stave 1l and haring a member 55 or a j )lurality ot such members mounted thereon so as to rotate therewith. Each member 55 is provided with a j ilurality ot arms 5G to which the blades or plates are riveted or otherwise secured. A pulley borne by drive shaft 1i drives a belt 5f), which, in turn,
drives a pulley GO rigidly mounted on shaft cumulating on top ot the upper stave 11, in
the space between the upper cylinders 9.
rl'lhe operation otl the machine is as tollows: ldower is applied to the drive shaft 1'1" 'from any suitable source, so as to drive the delinting cylinders 9 through the medium of gears 15 and 1G. rthe seeds to be delinted are ted into the inlet spout 19 and are then caused by the picssurc oft screw 24 to pass through the opening 2() into the delinting chamber 12 and to travel 'to-ward the Valve 25, so as to till all the compartments 41. The tinted member 38 iolds the seeds in the conipartments 41 in engagement with the delinting cylinders 9, and the teeth 14 borne by said delintin g cylinders not only remove the lint from the seeds, but, also, agitate the seeds in all the compartments 41, with the result that, while the seeds are being led through the dclinting chamber 12 by the screw Q4, saine pass trom one compartment to another and thereby come in contact with the several delinting cylinders betere reaching the discharge end ot the delinting chamn ber. This agitation et the seeds in the seyeral compartments causes each seed to come in contact with one or more of the delinting cylinders Sl, with the result oit removing all the short fibers or lint trein each seed that passes through the delinting chamber. The pressure oi the seeds within the delinting chamber 12 holds the valve open and thereby allows the delinted seeds to escape trom said delinting chan'iber into the discharge spout 'llhe lint or fiber that is scraped ott the seeds by the teeth 14 on the delinting cylinders O drops trom said cylinders into the bottoni of the casing, and then drawn away through the suction-pipe 8.
l claim:
1. A delinting machine including a plurality oil delinting cylinders arranged in spaced relation, means to close the spaces between the cylinders and to form a dclinting chamber in conjunction with said cylinders, and a stationary element in the center oli the delinting chamber having a plurality sides arranged so that each cylinder is disposed substantially opposite to one of the sides ol said element, whereby the latter provides a stationary wall for cach ot a series oit comj'mrtments, each of the latter being termed by said stationary Valls, the cylinder adjacent thereto and said closing means, and means to rotate the cylinders.
2. A delinti ng machine haring a delinting chamber, a plurality of delinting cylinders forming a. portion of the wall of said chamber, and staves intermediate of said cylinders and forming another portion of t-he wall of said chamber, each of said staves comprising an adjustable member, a blade having a beveled edge secured to one side of said member, and a plate adjustably secured to the other side of said member.
3. A delinting machine having a delinting chamber, a plurality of delinting cylinders forming a portion of the wall of said chamber, staves intermediate of said cylinders and forming another portion of the wall of said chamber, and a fan adapted to blow the lint from the uppermoststave.
4. A delinting machine having a delinting chamber, a plurality of delinting cylinders forming a portion of ,the wall of said chamber, staves intermediate of said cylinders and forming another portion of the wall of said chamber, and a stationary fluted member dividing said chamber into a plurality of communicating compartments and adapted to hold the seeds in engagement with said cylinders, the upper and lower staves being relatively closer to said member than the side staves.
5. A delinting machine having a delinting chamber, a plurality of cylinders forming a portion of the wall of said chamber, staves intermediate of said cylinders and forming another portion of the wall of said chamber, a stationary hollow member adapted to hold the seeds in engagement with said cylinders within said chamber, a drive shaft extending through said member, and means actuated by said shaft for rotating said cylinders.
6. A delinting machine having a delinting chamber, a plurality of cylinders forming a portion of the wall of said chamber, staves intermediate of said cylinders and forming another portion of the wall of said chamber, a stationary hollow member adapt-- ed to hold the seeds in engagement with said cylinders Within vsaid chamber, a drive shaft extending through said member, and means actuated by said shaft for rotating said cylinders, and means borne by said shaft for feeding the seeds into and through said chamber.
7. A delinting machine having a delinting chamber, a plurality of cylinders forming a portion of the wall of said chamber, staves intermediate of said cylinders and forming another portion of the wall of said chamber, a stationary hollow member adapted to hold the seeds in engagement with said cylinders within said chamber, a drive shaft extending through said member, and means actuated by said shaft for rotating said cylinders, means borne by said shaft for feeding the seeds into and through said chamber, and a valve reciprocatively mounted on said shaft for controlling the discharge of the delinted seeds from said chamber.
8. A delinting machine having a delinting chamber, a plurality of cylinders forming a portion of the wall of said chamber, staves intermediate of said cylinders and forming another portion of the wall of said chamber, a stationary hollow member adapted to hold the seeds in engagement with said cylinders within said chamber, a drive shaft extending through said member, and means actuated by said shaft for rotating said cylinders, means borne by said shaft for feeding the seeds into and through said chamber, a valve reciprocatively mounted on said shaft for controlling the discharge of the delinted seeds from said chamber, and an adjustable stop for limiting the movement of said valve.
9. In a delinting machine,'the combination of a casing having a delinting chamber, a plurality of delinting cylinders forming a portion of the wall of said chamber, staves intermediate of said cylinders and forming another port-ion of the wall 0f said chamber, a stationary hollow member adapted to hold the seeds in engagement with said cylinders, a drive shaft extending through said member, means actuated by said shaft for rotating said cylinders, an auxiliary shaft disposed above the uppermost stave, and blades borne by said auxiliary shaft for fanning the lint away from the uppermost stave.

In a delinting machine, the combination of a casing having a delinting chamber, a plurality of delinting cylinders forming a portion of the wall of said chamber, staves intermediate of said cylinders and forming another portion o-f the wall of said chamber, a stationary hollow member adapted to hold the seeds in engagement with said cylinders, a drive shaft. extending through said member, means actuated by said shaft for rotating said cylinders, an auxiliary shaft disposed above the uppermost stave, blades borne by said auxiliary shaft for fanning the lint away from the uppermost stave, and means actuated by said drive shaft for rotating said auxiliary shaft.
l1. In a delinting machine having a delinting chamber and an outlet therefor, a series of delinting cylinders forming a part of the walls of said chamber, means for holding the seeds in engagement with said cylinders, a shaft having an opening in one end thereof, a valve stem reciprocably mounted in said opening, a valve for controlling the delinting chamber outlet slidingly mounted on the shaft and being connected to said stem, and a screw for engagement with the outer end of said stem to limit the outward movement of said stem.
12. In a delinting machine, an annular series of spaced delinting cylinders, stationary hollow means in the center of the space delined by said cylinders, a shaft extending through said means, a series of means to close the spaces between said cylinders, a fan above the uppermost of said last mentioned means7 and means to drive said fan and cylinders simultaneously from said shaft.
13. A delinting' machine including a plurality of delinting cylinders arranged in spaced substantially circular relation, means in each of the spaces between the cylinders to close same, and to form a delinting chamber in conjunction with said cylinders, and a stationary element in the center' of the de linting chamber having a series of sides arranged so that each side faces an adjacent cylinder to form a compartment in conjunction therewith.
14. A delinting machine including` a plu rality of delintin` cylinders arranged in spaced substantially circular relation, means in each of the spaces between the cylinders to close same, and to :torni a delinting chamber in conjunction with said cylinders, and 25 a stationary element in the center of the delinting,1 chamber hating a series of concave faces each of which confronts a cylinder and is substantiallyr concentric thereto.
