FREDERICK C. SMITH, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR- TO THE WATER- BURY MFG. 00., 0F WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION.
PORTABLE ELECTRIC LAMP.
Application filed January 4, 1913.
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK C. SMrrI-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Electric Lamps; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in-
Figure l a side view of a pocket lamp constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 a transverse sectional view showing the button in position to close the circuit by an inward movement. Fig. 4 a similar view showing the contact placed by the sliding movement of the push button.
This invention relates to an improvement in portable electric lamps such as are commonly known as pocket lamps in which the light is developed by a small dry battery contained within the case. In the usual construction of these lamps the contact is made by pressing a push button inward, and the lamp will only remain lighted as long as the button is held in its depressed position by the finger.
The object of this invention is to provide means for locking the button in its operative position so that the lamp will re main lighted when the finger is removed from the push button; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.
In carrying out my invention, I employ the usual casing 2 containing dry battery 3 and incandescent electric lamp 4, the circuit being closed through a contact spring 5 adapted to be forced inward by a push button 6. In my improved device this push button 6 extends outward through an elongated slot 7 instead of through a circular hole. This permits the button to be pushed Specification of Letters Patent.

inward against the contact 5 as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, in which case the lamp will remain lighted only as long as the push button is held pressed inward by the finger. This push button is mounted on a slide 8 within the case which permits the push button 6 to be moved upward through the slot 7 as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, and when so raised the inner end of the button comes in contact with a shoulder 9 formed on the contact spring 5 and holds the contact spring 5 in engagement with the contact finger 10 of the battery 3, and so that the circuit will remain closed as long as the button remains in its raised position, and it will stay in this raised position until forced backward. I thus provide for lighting the lamp by the inward movement of the button or by a sliding movement of the button, the inward movement maintaining a light only as long as the button is depressed, while the upward movement of the button closes the circuit and it will remain closed until the button is again moved downward.
I claim:
The herein described electric portable lamp including a casing and a battery, a contact spring secured within the casing and adapted to contact with the battery, the said spring being formed with a shoulder, said casing having a slot in line with said contact sprin a slide within said casing between the casing and spring, a push button on said slide and extending through said slot and adapted to be moved inward against the spring and longitudinally in said slot to contact with said shoulder whereby in either movement of the button the spring is forced into contact with the battery.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
