INVENTOR ATTORNEY JAMES H. COOKE, OF GONNELLSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
RAIL-JOINT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 22, 1913.
Application filed April 21, 1913. Serial No. 762,607.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES H. CooKn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Connellsville, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in RailJoints, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to rail joints, and the objects of my invention are to obviate the necessity of using bolts and nuts for retaining splice bars in engagement with the sides of rails, and to provide a rail joint em' bodying splice bars that are interlocked and supported by chairs, whereby the splice bars cannot become accidentally displaced.
Further objects of my invention are to provide a rail joint that can be easily and quickly installed by unskilled labor, and to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that is inexpensive to manu facture, durable and highly eificient for the purposes for which it is intended.
Vith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construc tion, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the joint, Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View of the same, Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross sectional view of the joint, Fig. a is a perspective view of a portion of a splice bar, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a detached key.
Further describing my invention in detail with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein like numerals denote cor responding parts throughout: 1 denotes the confronting ends of rails and bracing the sides of said rails and the heads thereof are splice bars 2. These bars, at the ends thereof, have the outer sides tapered or beveled, as at 3 and engaging the ends of said splice bars are the flanges 4c of chairs 5. The chairs 5 are adapted to be supported by ties and are provided with spike notches 6 whereby spikes can be used for securing said chairs in position. The splice bars, intermediate the ends thereof have their confronting faces provided with vertical ribs 7 adapted to extend in between the ends of the rails 1. The ribs 7 and said splice bars are provided with vertical T-shaped slots 8 and these slots re ceive a key 9, similar to a small Lbeam, the key having lateral flanges 10 that fit within the slots 8. The key is employed for inter-- locking the splice bars 2 and said key is of a greater depth than the splice bars, whereby the upper end thereof will protrude above said splice bars and can be easily removed from the slots 8.
One embodiment of the invention has been illustrated but it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible of such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is In a rail joint, the combination with rails, of splice bars engaging the sides of said rails, said splice bars having the ends thereof beveled, rail chairs having flanges engaging the beveled ends of said splice bars, vertical ribs carried by the confronting sides of said splice bars intermediate the ends thereof and adapted to extend between said rails, said ribs and said splice bars having vertical T-shaped slots formed therein, and a key of the I-beam construction adapted to fit into the slots of said splice bars.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JAMES H. COOKE.
