To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, TJLLIAM E. MAR'IIN, a citizen of the United States, residing; at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of ltlinnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Accessories for Automobiles; and I do hereby declare the following" to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to malte and use the same.

rlhis invention relates to improvements in accessories for automobiles, and more particularly to a carrierl for use in the event of aV disabled wheel,--the object of the invention being;` to provide asimple and substantial structure which can be readily attached in a manner to fulfil the o'l'lice of a wheel.

A further object is to construct the device in such manner that it can be applied to the spokes of a damaged wheel and sustain the machine and permit the latter to travel until such place is reached where a new wheel or necessary repairs can beV provided.

A further object is to construct the device so that it can be readily adjusted to accommodate itself to automobiles employing wheels differing' in sizes.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying' drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating` my improvements. Fig'. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a view illustrating a modified construction of a portion of the device.

1 represents an elongated carriage comprising parallel bars 2 2 spaced apart and connected at their respective ends by cross bars 3; and wheels 4, 4, arranged in tandem between the bars 2, 2,-said bars being` provided with suitable bearings for the axles of said wheels.

At respective sides of each of the wheels 4, standards 5 are secured at their lower ends upon the bars 2. These standards are made tubular in form and receive depending arms 6 of horizontal bars 7 The bars 7 are thus disposed parallel with each other and in a plane appreciably above that of the wheels 4 and secured to these bars by means of suitable bolts or clips 8, is a horizontal plate or platform 9. The plate or platform 9 is thus disposed in a pla-ne above that of the wheels 4 and intermediate of said wheels. A bracket 10 is secured to and depends from the platform 9 and is provided at its lower end with a journal box 11 which is disposed horizontally and at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the carrier.

r1`he journal box 11 receives a shaft 12, longitudinal displacement of which is prevented by means of collars 13-14, and one end of the shaft is provided with a threaded socket 15. The bail 16 of a clip-block 17 rests againsty the end of the shaft 12 and is secured to the latter by ine-ans of a bolt 18 which passes through a suitable hole in the bail and enters the threaded socket in the end of said shaft. The clip-block 17 is conveniently made annular in form,--the central openingi 2O beine` adapted to receive the hub o-f an automobile wheel. The block 17 is provided with a plurality or annular series of holes 21 (in which suitable bushings may be located) for the accommodation of a plurality of clips 22. Each of these clips is made hoop-shaped at one end to engage the spoke of a damaged wheel, and the other end of each clip is threaded for the reception of a nut z3 whereby the clip can be securely tightened to the spoke.

By making' the connections between the horizontal bars 7 and the standards 5 telescopic, said bars can (together with the. plat-- form 9) be raised or lowered so as to vertically adjust the journal box 11 and thus accommodate the device to automobile Wheels of different sizes. Set screws 24 are provided for securing the platform and journal box at the desired elevation.

Instead of constructing' the clip-block, its bail and the shaft 12 in separate parts, they may be all cast in one piece, as shown in Fig'. 4.

For the purpose of connecting the carrier to the automobile, longitudinally adjustable braces 25 are provided and connected by nieans of loops 26 and clips 27 with respective ends of the carrier frame 1,--the other ends of said adjustable braces being provided with loops 28 to receive straps 29 for attaching them to the spring of the machine. One or both ends of the carrier frame may also be connected with the machine by suitindicated at 30.

Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:

l. An accessory for automobiles comprising a carriage, means for connecting the same With an automobile, a journal box mounted on said carriage, and means for adjusting said journal box to alinement With an axle spindle of the automobile.

2. An accessory for automobiles co-mprising a carriage, a vertically adjustable bracket thereon, and means for connecting said bracket with the spokes of an automobile Wheel.

3. An accessory for automobiles comprising a carriage, means for connecting said carriage to an automobile, a bracket mounted on said carriage, and a clip device connected with said bracket and adaptable to an automobile Wheel.

4. An accessory for automobiles comprising a carriage, means for connecting the same to an automobile, a bracket mounted on said carriage, a block having an opening toreceive the hub of a Wheel, clips carried by said block for attachment to said Wheel, and means connecting said block with the bracket on the carriage.

5. An accessory for automobiles comprising a carriage, means for connecting the same to an auto-mobile, a block provided with clips for attachment to an automobile Wheel, and means for connecting said block With the carriage.

6. An accessory for automobiles comprising a carriage, a clip device adaptable to an automobile Wheel7 and means for adjustably connecting said clip device with the carriage.

7 An accessory for automobiles comprising a carriage, a vertically adjustable bracket supported thereon and provided with a journal box7 a clip block for attachment-to an automobile Wheel, and a shaft rigid with said clip block and mounted in the journal box on the carriage.

8. An accessory for automobiles comprising a carriage7 a vertically adjustable platform mounted on said carriage, a bracket depending from said platform and provided with a journal box, a clip device adaptable to an automobile Wheel, and a shaft rigid with said clip device and mounted in said journal box.

9. An accessory for automobiles co-mprising a carriage, a bracket mounted thereon, an annular block, a plurality of clips carried by said block for attachment to an automobile tvheel, a bail rigid with said block, and a shaft rigid with said bail and ccnnected with said bracket.
