PLATE AND SHEET FURNACE.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HARRY YV. BURNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plate and Sheet Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to and has to do with improvements in plate and sheet furnaces for heating plates and sheets particularly adapted and commonly used in rolling mills where plates and sheets are to be heated to be rolled to various gages from iron and steel.
The object of my invention is to provide an even heat to that part of the furnace proper in which the sheets are heated and to protect the sheets during the process of heating from the rash flame and hot air from the fire or combustion chamber. This object, tog-ether with other objects readily apparent to those skilled in the art I attain by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, although my invention may be embodied in a variety of other mechanical forms, the construction illustrated being chosen by way of example.
In the accompanying drawings--Figure l is a vertical section on line 2-2, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a horizontal plan view. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on line 3-3, Fig. 1. Fig. 1- is a perspective view of the heating chamber showing parts of the wall broken away.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 represents the foundation or bot tom of the pit, and 2 represents the foundation or bottom of the fire and heating chambers, said foundation or bottoms being preferably located in different horizontal planes, the side and end walls 3 and 4t and the top or crown 5 being constructed in the usual manner, reference being had to the construction and arrangement of the various parts going to make up the improved furnace.
Directly above a portion of the pit foundation or bottom 1 is located the ash pit 6 and a suitable distance above the bottom of this ash pit are located the grate bars 7, which are of the usual construction and sup ported in any convenient and well known Specification of Letters Patent.

Above the grate bars 7 is located the fuel or combustion chamber 8, and between the combustion chamber 8 and the heating chamber 9 is located the bridge wall 10, which bridge wall is formed solid and of a height less than the extreme height of the combustion and heating chambers S and 9, thereby providing a space between the top of the bridge wall 10, and the underside of the top or crown 5, thereby allowing the products of combustion and flame to pass over the top of said bridge wall and into the heating chamber 9.
The heating chamber 9 is divided or made up of two parts 5) and 11 and between said parts 9 and 11 is located the '''all 12, which wall is provided with a series of passages 13, which passages are formed in the wall by properly spacing the ends of the brick substantially as shown in Fig. 3, but the specific arrangement of the wall is immaterial, eX- cept that when the wall is constructed it will be provided with the passages 13, and I have illustrated a simple and easy way of forming a wall with the desired passages. The portion of the heating chamber 11 is so constructed and arranged that the sheets of iron or steel can be placed within the chamher and for the pin-pose of n'oviding means for properly entering the sheets for properly heating the same to be rerolled, a series of supporting bars 14. are provided, said supporting bars being arranged substantially as shown in Fig. 4 and are made up of what might be termed frames and are supported by means of the side walls 3 and the inter mediate pillars 15.
In Fig. 3 I have illustrated three tiers of sheet holding bars, but it will be understood that this number may be increased or decreased without departing from the nature of my invention, owing to the fact that the number of tiers will depend on the size of the furnace, but for the practical working of a furnace of this class three tiers of sheet holding bars is quite sufficient.
It will be understood that in front of each tier of the sheet holding bars there should be a door 16 of sufficient size to allow the sheets to be properly placed in the heating furnace and removed. For the purpose of preventing the accidental displacement of the sheets or more specifically the dropping of the sheets, an inclined rack 17 is provided, which is inclined downward from liable to become scorched and injured and in order to avoid the excessive heating of the sheets or better distributing the heat the passages 13 formed in the division wall 12 are provided, thereby breaking up, or in other words dividing the flame and preventing a large flame from coming in direct contact with a small or restricted portion of the surfaces of the sheets.
For tne purpose of directing the heat and causing the same to pass into the heating chamber directly opposite the sheet holding bars 14, the portion of the wall 12 located below said sheet holding bars is formed solid, thereby causing all of the heat to pass through the apertures 13, said apertures being located in such a position that practically all of the heat will be utilized in reheating the sheets.
At one side of the furnace proper and preferably near one corner of the combustion chamber 8 is located the chimney 18, which is formed of sufficient height to produce the desired amount of draft. The intake of the chimney 18 is located in a horizontal plane near the bottoms of the tire and heating chambers. In the bottom of the heating chamber 11 are located the intake openings 19 and 20 of the horizontal fines, which openings are provided with the regulating dampers 21. From the opening 19 leads the horizontal flue 22, which flue is connected to the bottom of the chimney 18. From the intake opening 20 leads the horizontal flue 23, which flue connects up with the horizontal flue 22 at a point intermediate the intake and chimney end of the horizontal flue 22, but the exact location of the horizontal flue 23 is immaterial, except- 1t is desirable to run the same 111 a diagonal direction, thereby bringing about a more direct draft.
It will be understood that by locating the chimneyintake openings 19 and 20 near the end walls of the furnace proper and forward of the sheet receiving racks or frames 14, that the draft of the chimneylS will be such that the products of combustion and the heat will be drawn through the heating chamber 9 and the sheet heating division of said chamber 11, thereby drawing the heat in such a manner that it will be better distributed over the entire surfaces of the va rious sheets of iron and steel designed to be reheated.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. in a furnace of the class described, the combination of side and end walls and a top wall, a heating chamber having located therein a bridge wall and a perforated wall, pillars located in the heating chamber upon the opposite side of the perforated wall from that of the bridge wall, supporting bars carried by the pillars, said supporting bars located in tiers, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a furnace of the class described, the combination of furnace .walls, a heating chamber having located therein a bridge wall and a perforated wall, pillars located in the heating chamber and upon opposite sides of the perforated wall from that of the bridge wall, sheet holding bars carried by the pillars, and inclined racks located in the heating chamber in front of the sheet holding bars, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
