ALBERT U. MONTGOMERY, OF HATTIESBUR-G, MISSISSIPPI.
LINE-PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 15, 1913.
Application filed July 23, 1912. Serial No. 711,152.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT U. MONT- GOMERY, citizen of the United States, residing at Hattiesburg, in the county of Forrest and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Line Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for protecting driving reins from entanglement with the tails of horses, and has for one of its objects to provide a simply constructed device which may be readily applied without material structural changes to different kinds of harnesses and which will effectually prevent the tail of the horse from becoming entangled in the driving reins.
Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device whereby the tail is prevented from becoming entangled in the driving reins while at. the same time the tail is free to be moved laterally as required.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described, and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a horse and a portion of the harness with the improvement applied; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the improved device; Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the tail-engaging por tion of the improved device.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved device comprises a flexible body having means at the ends for attachment to portions of the harness, preferably to the hip straps, and provided intermediate its end with a clip device adapted to engage around the tail of the horse. The body portion is constructed preferably of an inner flexible tubular portion, and an outer flexible tubular portion with harness-engaging devices at the ends and with tail-engaging devices intermediate the ends. The tubular portions are constructed preferably of coiled wire, the inner tubular portion being indicated conventionally at 10, while the outer tubular portion is indicated conventionally at 11. The inner portion 10 is formed from relatively closely coiled wire and with stop knobs 12-13 at the ends, while the outer tubular portion 11 is likewise formed of closely coil-ed wires and engages around the inner tubular member and is slidable thereon, as shown. By this means a flexible body is formed which is strong and durable and readily adapts itself to the body of a horse, and may be curved to correspond thereto. At'its ends the inner tubular portion 10 is surrounded by short coils bent at the ends into inwardly directed clips or loops 1-115 which are adapted to engage around the hip straps of a harness, one of which is represented at 16. By this means the improved device may be readily connected to the hip straps and extend around the rear portion of the horse and over the tail, the latter being represented conventionally at 17. Bearing around the tubular portion 11 intermediate its ends, is a sleeve 18 from which bearing arms 1920 are extended and curved to engage around opposite sides of the tail of the horse. The members 19-20 are sufficiently flexible to enable them to be sepa rated to a suflicient extent to receive the tail and will then return to their normal position by their own resiliency and hold the tail with suflicient force to prevent displacement.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured and applied without inconvenience to the horse and without detracting from the appearance of the harness. By this simple means the driving reins are protected from entaglement with the tail. 4
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A rein protector comprising an inner flexible member having laterally enlarged stop plugs at the ends, an outer flexible member inclosing the inner flexible member and slidable upon the same, attaching means carried by the flexible members, and tail-engaging arms carried by the outer flexible member.
2. A rein protector comprising an inner flexible member having laterally enlarged stop lugs at the ends, an outer flexible member inclosing the inner flexible member and slidable on the same, attaching means carried by the inner flexible member, a sleeve slidable upon said outer flexible member, and tail-engaging arms extending from said sleeve.
3. A rein protector comprising an inner flexible member formed of coiled wire, stops at the ends of the inner flexible member, attaching devices engaging the inner flexible member and bearing against the stops, an outer flexible member formed of coiled Wire and slidably engaging around the inner flexible member and tail-engaging arms carried by the outer flexible member.
4. A rein protector comprising an inner flexible member formed of coiled Wire, stops at the ends of the inner flexible member attaching devices engaging the inner flexible member and bearing against the stops, an outer flexible member formed of coiled Wire and engaging around the inner flexible member and slidable on the same, a sleeve slidable upon said outer flexible member,
and tail-engaging arms extending from said sleeve.
5. A rein protector comprising an inner flexible member formed of coiled Wire, stops at the ends of the inner flexible member, attaching devices each formed of a coil of Wire engaging around the inner flexible member and bearing against the stops and With inwardly directed loops at the ends, an outer flexible member formed of coiled Wire and engaging around the inner flexible member and slidable on the same, and tailengaging arms carried by the outer flexible member.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
ALBERT U. MONTGOMERY.
