Specification of Letters Patent.
, Patented July a, 1913.
. Application filed December 4, 1912. Serial in}. 734,943.-
To all whom, z't may concern} Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER M. ALTON, a citizen of the roe and State of New York, hzwe invented certain new and useful Improvements in invention is to provide means for illuminat- "ing the tube in order that the position of the bubble may be readily ascertained when the device is being used in a poorly lighted place.
A'more specific objectfiof the invention resides in the provision of a spirit level having a stock provided with'a pocketadapted to receive a storage battery and lamp, said lam being so the ubble; tubes.
The invention also aims to generally improve devices of this nature to render them more useful and commercially desirable,
With these and other objects in view,-as will become moreapparent as the descri tion proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel-features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be,
hereinafter fully described and claimed. For-a complete understanding of my invention, reference, isto be had to the follow ing description and accompanyingdrawings, in which,
Figure l-is a side proved spiritlevel; Fig. '2, a similar View plates removed; Fig. 3, a longitudinal sectional view; and Fig.4 is a transverse sectional view taken upon the plane of line 4-4 of Fig. 3; Referring in detail to the drawing by numerals 1 designates a stock formed pref- .th'ubble tube 7 extends erably of wood and havin the sight openings 2 and 3, the former ing covered by a slotted plate 4-. A bubble tube 5 is positioned under the plate-"4c and .retained in --suitablerecesses by a plastic material 6. A transversely of the stock 1 through a suitable opening and prog'ects partly into the sight opening 3. This tube is also held in place by any suitable ,plastic material such as plaster ofPeris or enant.
'ihc stock 1 is formed with a centrally pr dated transversely extending chamber United States, re-- siding at Rochester, in the county OfdVlOIbyp to levels of that upon the button 11.. A longitudinal chancontaining tube'isthese channels terminate at positioned as to illuminate elevation of my imchamber 8. A
Mon and extending. entirely throl'igh, the
stock.- A longitudinally extendingrecess oc'ipocketfl is formed in the stock and co1nmunicates at its inner end with the chamher 8,. said pocket beingadapted to receive a flash-light of any common or preferred said light being flashed bypressing ml 12 and a transverse channel 13 connect the tube holdin recesses respectively wit-h the central chaniber 8. It will'be noted that their outer ends directly under the central portions of the tubes 5 and 7 through said channels the bubbles contained in the tubes may be clearly seen when they are in their central positions. A concave convex reflector 14 1s secured m-the bottom of the; chamber 8 between the channel 12 and-pocket 9, saidreflector serving. to direct a portion of the light coming from theflashlight through the channel 13, I Cover plates 15 and 16 are secured to opposite sides of the stock'l for the purpose ofclosing certain .of the openings formed therein. The, cover plate 16 is'formed with acircular opening 17 through which the push but ton ll of the flash-light projects.
When the spirit level is being used in a 8, said chamber being circular in cross se'cso that when light is reflected dark place and it-is desiredcto throw a. light upon either of the bubble tubesthe button l1 is pressed inwardly causing a current to flow from the storage battery of the flashlight through the. incandescent light bulb and thus a ray of light is,thrown' into the portion of this light travels channel l2an'd illuminates the tube 7 While the other portion of'the lightis deflected upwardly by the reflectorl l so as to illuminate the tube 5.
It is to be understood that while I have shown and described the preferred embodi ment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to this exact construction and arrangement of parts but may make such changes as-willfall .withinthe scope and spirit of the invention. 9
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1 I 1. A spirit level comprising a stock having a sight opening in one edge and a sight through .the
opening extending transversely through the ..clian1ber anda pocket communicating with saitlchaniber, aflash-light in said pocket, the stock belng also formed with channels communicating with saigl chamber and a 5 sight openings.
24A spirit level comprising a stock haying one edge formed with a sight. opening, the stock being alsorformeil with a trans versely extending sight o iening, bubble 1'0 tigbes positioned within said openings the said sight openings and longitndinallylex- 15 tending pocket communicaiting at its inner end with-said chmhben'a flash-light positioned within said pocket, a reflector'in' the fbottom of the chamber and cover plates positioncd upon each side of said stock. substantially as described.
In testimony whereof-I efiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
