Description

1 J MEE HAN.
LUBRIGATOR.
No. 106,712. Patented Aug. 23, 1870.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES MEET-IAN, OF (JOVINGTON, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN LUBRICATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Pa tent No. 106,712, dated August 23, 1570.
To all whom 1'2 may concern Be it known that I, JAMEs MEEIIAN, of the city of Oovington, in the county of Kenton and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil Cups or Feeders for Locomotives orothcr l\la(.-hinery; and I do hereby declare that thetollowiug is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of an oil-cup for lubricating the journals of crank or eccentric motion, as will be hereinafter fully set forth,
ln order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I. will now [nocced to describe its construction and operation, referring-to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 2 is a side view of my oil-cup.
.i represents an oil-cup, made in any desired form, with its cap I, adjusting-screw l), jamnut ll, and central or perpendicular tube 13, with an opening or bore, (I, and a concave mouth, F, and seat. 0, into which is inserted and fitted a conical or cup-shaped valve, A, with a stem, ll, made to correspond in size with the opening or bore (l, and of sutlicient length to pass down about two-thirds of the length of perpendicular tube 1;. The cupshapcd valve is so constructed that when the stem II is inserted in the bore (lit will form a perfect air-tight joint on the face or seat U of the perpendicular tube B, and is kept in its place by means of the adjusting-screw l) and jam-nut I".
The operation of the cup is as follows: \Vhen thecup is attached to the strap or stub end of a rod the centrifugal action of the crank will cause the valve to oscillate or move up and down in the opening or bore G, thereby causing the oil to pass into the conical opening F and be carried down through the opening G by means of the stem II; or the stem in its upward motion draws the air into the cup and in its downward motion expels it in a moistened state from the evaporation of the oil. The amountof movement or rise, and fall to valve is regulated by means of the adj ustingscrew and jam-nut E, which regulates the supply of oil, and when the crank is at; restthe concave lower face of the valve, forming a perfect air-tight joint on the seat 0, will preventany oil from escaping only when the crank is in operation. guides or slide-bars by action of the cross-head.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The perpendicular tube B, with its concave mouth or opening I bore G, and seatU, constructed and arranged substantially as herein set forth.
2. The cup-shaped valve A, with its concave or lower face resting on the seat. 0 and its stem 11 terminating in a point and titted into the bore G, substantially as herein set forth.
3. The combination of the cup J with tube 3, valve A, stem 11, cap I, screw 1), and jamnut E, all constructed as described, and operating substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myown l atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES MEEHAN.
