Speciltcatiorr of Letters Patent.

Applicaties fueaiiovember e, 1912.: seriaino.. 729.891..
Be it known that I, Fnnminfzroiir.` Gn. DURBIN, a citizen of the United- States re'siding at Plymouth, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Hat-Ventilator,y of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hat ventilators.
The object of the invention is to provide a novel article of this character which will be adapted to withstand hard usage such as {will be received in hat ventilators upon miners hats.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combinav tion and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit'of the invention.
In the drawings accompanying this specification and forming a part thereof Figure 1 is a sectional View of a hat having two of my limproved ventilators attached thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of one of my improved ventilators. Figs. 3 and 4 are front and side views of the outer member of my improved ventilator. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the attachin member. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the ventilator door.
Referring to the drawings in which simi- `lar reference numerals designate corre sponding parts throughout the several views, 10 is a miners hat and is formed with the usual canvas portion 11 and the lining 12. Round holes are cut therein and into these holes are placed the metallic ventilators. These ventilators comprise a body portion, an attachment member, and a lid or closing ap.
The body portion is formed with an annular'flange 13 having a lowered cup-shaped portion with side walls 14 and a reticulated foraminous screen bottom 15. In order that this member may be held securely in position u on the outer portion of the hat, it is provirfiad with slots 17 into which are in serted flaps 21 of the attaching member 19. The lining and canvas cover are thereby gripped between the two annular flanges 13 and 19. The lugs 21 are formed integral with the member 19 as at 20 by slitting the annular flange and bending the resulting flaps 11p-warally.v 'Ehese flaps are: driven thfreugh the walls ofx the hat and; extend through the slots 18- after wlriehztliey are bent over. as at 22 to; thereby c'larnrp the flanges in spaced relation. The two flanges 12 andv 19 may be riveted togetherpin conjunction with the slots and lugs as shown in which case the flanges would be provided with the rivet holes 27 and 28 as indicated in Figs. 3 and 5.
The lid adapted to close the ventilator is formed of two spaced plates 23, 25. The plate 23 is provided with an overlapping edge 24, beneath which and held therebetween is the out-lying flange 27 of the side Walls 26, which walls are formed integral with the bottom 25. Each side wall 26 is slightly inclined so that the lid may be wedged into and engaged by the cup-shaped portion 14w15. An extension 28 is formed integral with the plate 23 and is circled upon itself to form a hinged connection with a bar 18, which bar is soldered to the flange 13.
In Fig. 1 I have shown the ventilator in position and attached to, a miners hat and it is to be noted in this connection that the ventilators have been applied to the hat with the hinged connections 18 at the lower end of the ventilator hole so that the lid opens outwardly and downwardly. The normal tendency therefore of the lid will be to remain in an open position having once acquired that position. This position is the one in which the lid will be kept during a majority of the time the hat is in usage. By forming the lid with spaced plates as shown, a light but substantial construction is obtained. The lid will remain "in a closed position due to a certain resiliency of the side walls thereof cont-acting with and lying within the cup-shaped por ftion hereinbefore mentioned in the body cleaned. These advantages I have embodied in my improved construction.
Having thus fully disclosed the construction and Operation of my improved hat ventilator, what I claim to be new and original with me is In a'hat ventilator, the combination of an annular flange, a foraminous screen rigidly secured thereto and spaced a distance therefrom, a lid comprising spaced plates hing edly secured to the said-f annlar ange and adapted to extend within the Opening therein and to resiliently engage the side walls thereof, said hinged lid adapted to open outwardly, and a second annular flange similar to the first mentioned annular flange, and means for securing the two said anges together and tO grip the Side walls 0f a hat therebetween. l
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
