To all 'whom it may concern.:
"Be known that I, ALBERT WrNNmn, a citizen of the United States,- and a resident of Dorchester, county of'Suiolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combustion- Engines, of which the vfollowing is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates more particularly to a class of combustion engines 'of the four-v cycle type.
My invention has for its .object primarily to provide a hydrocarbon internal combustion engine of a four-cycle type whichis adapted for use to ropel automobiles, wagons, carts, boats and) the like, and' which is so constructed that charges' of the'mot'ive p agent admitted into the compression chamber may be exploded 'at every alternate revolution of the crank-shaft; and to provide a `1 combustion engine wherein the parts thereof are of a simplified form 'so that'when assembled` and in operation will permit of being economically lubricated and which are not susceptible of -being easily 'damaged or Another object of the invention is-to?l pro- A vide new and novel forms of valves for the inlet and 'outlet ports wherein forms of slides are employed which are adapted to .effectually control the admission of the l. charges olf-'the motive agent into the comfpression chamber and allow a thorough dibygpplying thereto certainl parts' from another engine, if desired.
A practical embodiment of lthe invention 1s represented 'in the accompanying drawf ing forming a part of this-specification 'in 1- which' similar characters of reference indif .cate .corresponding parts l1n all Vthe views,

Fig. 12 is a view of oneffaee of one ol the front plates of the valvesof the engine, and Fig. 13, is a. section taken on the luie VTI-VI of Fig. 12.
The combustion engine 10'has a cylinder 11 which' is preferably vertically disposed in my type engine, and upon the upper end of said cylinderV is provided a headI or cap 12 which may be formed integral with or separate from the cylinder. Spaced apart from the walls 13 and 14 of the cylinder and head, respectively, is an outer jacketl and 16 so as to provide chambers 17 and 18 which are preferably arranged soas to communicate with each other for circulating -water therethrough whereby the -cylinder may be kept at a proper working temperature. Provided upon`the lower endV of the cylinderf 11 is a crank-casing 19 which mayA be of the usual or any preferred form or may consist of a plurality of parts, in order to Permit access to the crank-pit l20 therein when ifi is desired to clean or repair the 1 engine and said crank-casing has oppositely directed extensions 1 9il and 19". Journaled substantially midway of two of the' opposed walls of the crank-casing 19 and between the extreme ends of the extensions 19a and 19b is a. crank-shaft 21 of a crank 22 comprising plates 23 connected by a transverse' crank-p in 25 having held thereto one end of aconnecting rod 26, At the opposite end of the connecting rod 26 is a Wristpin- 27, and upon said is a piston 28' adapted tofr'eci rocate 1n the cylinder 11.
Above the piston 28, in the cylinderoll is. a combustion chamber 29 in which the gaseous-fuel is' compressed prior to explosion, and in the'. head 12. is.a,threaded opening 30 for receptionof a spark plug ori niting device as 31, of anyjsuxtable-jform'w ich an upper part.` @tithe Cy may be adaptedv to explodcthe vgasecn1--fuel within the combusti hndel'l i s rovide'd an intake' port 32"ffcr admission'o charges o'f the'motiveag'ent intothe .combustion `cha'mb'jerf29 .and 1n the upper'fpart 'o f'said .cylmderoppdsite to the intakeport 32 vis an outlet .poit'thrqugh which 1s exhausted said compression chamber tojbe directly eic-V the exploded Yproducts-0f vcombusa-0n:from

As shown in Fig. 1 the eccentrics 94, 94
, are arranged' lso .that the'valves 36' and37 will open and .close at alternate revolutions of the. counter . shafts 93, 93?, therefore, withv each stroke of the rods 92,92* and the rods' 82, 82 the slides 62, 63 and .62,63Il will re-f ciproeate within thechambers 42, 43 and 44, 45 of thevalves 86 and 37, and said valves will lthereby admit in to the compression chamber 29 the motiveagentthroughthe intake-port 82'of the cylinder 11 and allow. the
