Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed December 5, 1912.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRED RABE, Sn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Melrose Park, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammock- Supports, of which the following is a specification.

The device which is the subject of the present invention is designed to support a hammock in an open place where there are no trees or post between which the hammock may besuspended.

It is the object of the invention to provide a support whereby the hammock may be hung level throughout its entire length, and also to provide a support which is adjustable to suit hammocks of diflerent lengths.

A further object of the invention is to provide means for taking up any sag in the hammock.

These objects are attained by a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the support showing the manner in which the hammock is applied thereto, and Fig. 2 is a sectional detail showing the joint between the legs of the stand.

Referring specifically to the drawings, 10 denotes two substantial wooden legs which are crossed at their upper ends and bored at the crossing to snugly receive the end of a tubular horizontal bar 11 which may be a piece of piping. Two pairs of these legs are provided and the bar extends therebetween. This structure provides a stand which supports the hammock 12. The length of the legs is such that the horizontal bar is supported a suitable distance from the groun In order to provide a strong and durable connection between the legs and the horizontal bar, the former are split at the top down to the holes in which the latter seats, as indicated at 13, and clamping bolts 14 passing through the split ends, provided with nuts 15, are employed to draw said ends together so that the bar may be tightly clamped. At or about the middle of the legs are cross-braces 16, and brace bars 17 run from each leg to the horizontal bar.

Into each end of the horizontal bar is inserted a short stem 18, the same having a reduced end 19 to enter the bar. The outer end of the stem is slit as indicated at 20, to receive a lever 21 which is pivoted by a bolt 22 passing through the slitted portion of the stem. Each end of the stand is provided with one of these levers. The levers are mounted toswing in a vertical plane in the direction of the length of the stand, and to their lower ends the hammock 12 is made fast in any suitable manner. .The upper ends of the levers are connected by a chain 23, said chain being connected to hooks 24 carried by said ends of the levers. The chain is long enough so that it may be let out or lengthened, which can be readily done as it is connected to one of the hooks by placing one of the links over the same.

The herein described adjustability of the chain 23 enables the lower ends of the levers to be swung toward and from each other according to the length of the hammock, in view of which the device is adapted to hammocks of different lengths, and any sag in the hammock may be taken up by shortening the chain.

The device provides a strong and durable support for the hammock and it may be placed in any desired location.

I claim:

1. A hammock support comprising a stand, levers carried by the stand and pivoted to swing toward and from each other,

between corresponding ends of which levers the hammock is suspended, and an adjustable connection between the other ends of the levers.

2. A hammock support comprising a stand having a tubular horizontal bar, stems mounted in the ends of said bar, levers carried by the stems, said levers being pivoted to swing toward and from each other, between corresponding ends of which levers the hammock is suspended, and an adjustable connection between the other ends of the levers. v

3. A hammock support comprising a stand composed of crossed legs arranged in pairs and a horizontal bar connecting said pairs and passing through the legs at the crossing, levers mounted at the ends of the horizontal bar, said levers being pivoted to swing toward and from each other, between corresponding ends of which levers the hammock is suspended, and an adjustable connection between the other ends of the levers.

4. A hammock support comprising a stand composed of crossed legs arranged in pairs and a tubular horizontal bar connecting said pairs and passing through the legs at the crossing, stems mounted in the ends of the horizontal bar, levers carried by the stems, said levers being pivoted to swing toward and from each other, between corresponding ends of which levers the hammock in presence of two witnesses.
