Letters Patent No. 106,598, dated .August 23, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GIDEON B. MAssEY, of lthe city, county, andState of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Low-water and High-pressure Alarm; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which wilt enableothers skilled in the art to make and use the same, neterence beinghad to the accompanying drawing forming part of' this specification.
My invention relates to low-water and high-pressure indicators, and my object is to provide more sure and effective means for lift-ing the steam-valve.
I will now describe my improvements in connection with such other parts as are necessary to a clear nnderstanding thereof, and then point out and specify the saidin'iprovements in the claim. -In the accompanying drawing- `1 `igure 1 represents a frontview of the instrument, partly in section, seen as when attached to the head of ast-ea-m-boiler.
Figure 2 is a sectional side view of the same.

.B B is a double tube, connect-ed with the` boiler below the water-line, as seen at Cf Ihe double tube forms a rectangle.

This short tube D is connected with the boiler by means of the tube E, as .seen in tig. 2.
F is a partition in the tube E, which divides it, and also the tube D, into two parts. One part communicates with one ot" the long vertical tubes B, and the other part with the other long'tube. i
By means of this partition, au unobstructed channel is formed through the double tube, so that, when the water in the Aboiler falls to the dangerous point, as at c, steam will enter, and elfectually exclude any water which may be retained in the double tube by reason of a vacuum in its upper part,'and expand the tube by imparting heat thereto.
By this position, I secure two independent connections with a-steam-boiler, so that, when the water descends below a given point, the steam will enter one,`
and force the water out through the other.` In a single connection, ou the other hand, the steam must rise through the water, which will condense it, and create delay.
The rod G of the steam-whistle valve is connected with the upper short horizont-al tube H by means of the swivel-nut I, in which nut the cud of the roti works, and is made adjustable.
Y J is a cent-ral tube, which connects the parts ofthe whistle together, containingaspiral spring, K, around the valve-stem G, which spring acts against a collar on the stem at its lower end, and against the endv ot the spring-adjusting screw, L, at its upper end.
It will be seen that the spring bears directly down upon the valve with a constant pressure, and with a force proportioned to the pressure of' steam required, the tension ot' the spring being regulated by the screw L.
M is a gauge-cock.
N is a tube, which connects the whistle with the steam-space of the boiler.
\Vhen the pressure exceeds the power or tension of the spring, (as the latter may be adjnsteth) the valve will be raised, and the whistle will give the alarm.
It will be seen that the whistle-valve may be so adjusted upon its seat, by means of the swivel-nut, that the least expansion or increase in length of the double tube B B will raise it from its seat, and give the alarm for low water.
The adjustment ofthe valve for high steam and for low water, it will be seen, are entirely distinct and independent of' each other, the result of high steam or over pressure, as well as ot' low water, being to raise the valve, and sound the alarm.
A sliding tube or other device ma; be arranged over the adj ust-ing apparatus ot' the whistle-valve, so that the adj ustiug-screws may be iuclosed and locked, to prevent tampering with the valve.
