. duce a gas U D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH FRANK MCCORMICK, or moon'r vmmon, omo.
SAD-IRON.
To all whom it may concern.
Beit known that I, JOSEPH F. McCon- MICK, a citizen of the United States, reslding at Mount Vernon','in'the county of Knox and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Sad-Irons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates'to sad-irons, and more particularly to that class known. as self heating irons.
The object of the invention is to proto operate and Another object of the invention is to produce a self heating iron, that moistens and will not burn the material.
Another object of the invention is to proself heated iron that generates steam for moistening the material to be pressed. V
Another object'of the invention is to produce a self heating iron that canbe constructed of castings, thereby saving cost in manufacture.
The details of construction and the combination of parts to attain these objects, will be more fully set forth in the accompanying drawing forming a partof this specification, in which;
' Figure 1, is aside view of my improved self heating sad-iron, Fig. 2, is a plan view of the bottom of my improved iron, Fig.- 3, is a longitudinal sectional viewof my invention, and Fig: 4 is a plan view on a reduced scale of the wire screen employed.
Like numerals .of reference designate cor responding parts in the several figures of the drawings. 1 i I My improved sad-iron comprises a hollow body portion 1, to which is attached the handle 2. The body 1, contains a heating chamber 3-, and a steam generating chamber 4, the chambers 3 and 4, being separated by a partition 5. The steam generating chamber 4, is closed on itsunder side by a plate 6, contaming perforations 7 A gasket 8, is inserted between the plate 6 and the surrounding 'edges of the chamber 4. The
'body portion 1, is'provided with a plurality of ventilating openings 9, leading from the chamber 3, to the atmosphere. Resting on plates 6 is a wire screen designated 8.
The iron is heated by means of a burner 10, extending through a bushing 11, inthef' Specification of Letters Patent. 1 Application filed August as, 1911. Serial No. 645,685.
Patented July 1,1913.
rear wall of the body 1. The burner 10, is
'of the Bunsen type, and air 1s admitted to the same through openings 12, in the burner.
Water is admitted in small quantities into the chamber 4, by means of a pipe 13, extending through the rear wall of the sad iron, and the pipe 13, may be connected by 1 a valved flexible conduit from any suitable water supply. A valved gas supply pipe 1 14, is connected to the burner 10, for the purpose of supplying fuel to the burner.
The operationof my invention, is as follows. The iron is heated by the burner, said -heat getting the body portion of the iron very hot and especially the dividing wall 5, this creates an intense heat in the steam generating chamber 4. Water is allowed to.
-flow continuously 'but in a small quantity In addition to this these ports provide a 7 rapid cooling means, afterthe iron has been used and the heat shut off. The water will be prevented by the capillary attraction between the same and the wirescreen, from flowing from the steam chamber onto a garment before conversion into steam.
I do not desire to limit myself to the exact construction shown in the drawings, but reserve the right to use such changes in theconstruction as those skilled in the art may make without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my nvention what I cla m 1s,
1. A sad-iron provided with a body having a heating chamber, means to supply fuel to the said chamber, a steam chamber, means to supply water thereto, a partition intermediate said chambers, a perforated bottomplate below' said steam chamber, and a wire screen above said plate onto whichthe water is directly discharged. A sad-iron provided with a body having a heating chamber, said body provided with ventilation openings at said chamber, means to supply fuel to said chamber, a steam chamber, means to supply water thereto, a partition intermediate said chambers, a removable bottom-plate, fastening members therefor engaging the body, and a wire screen above said plate onto which the Water is directly discharged.
