M/VENTUR ATTORNEYS VENEMON LAWRENCE-WALLACE, OESALCDLAKE. CITY,. UTAH.
VEHICLE-SIGN.
Specification of Letterslatent.
Patented June 24, 1913.
Application filed February 24, 1912. Serial Noj.=679,790.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VnNnMoN L. W AL- LACE, a citizen of the United resident of Salt Lake City, Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented a new and Improved Vehicle-Sign, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved sign for use on automobiles and other vehicles so as to display the characters to their full extent and to insure proper illumination of the sign during the night.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a face view of the vehicle sign and the lamp for illuminating the sign; and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
The frame A of the sign is preferably rectangular in shape and formed of top and bottom bars A, A 'and end bars A and A the bars being provided along their inner edges with grooves B for the reception of the marginal edges of a back board C and integral top and bottom flanges D formed on the upper and lower ends of the letters, numerals or other characters D forming the sign, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1. The characters D are displayed in the front of the back board C and are of contrasting color relative to the same so as to display the sign to the fullestadvantage and permit easy reading of the sign even at a great distance. By reference to Fig. 1 it will be noticed that the characters D are approximately of a height corresponding to the height of the opening of the frame A, that is, the distance between the inner edges of the top and bottom bars A, A of the frame A. The flanges D of the characters D are not visible as they extend within the grooves B in the top and bottom bars A and A In case the short character D is used to in dicate the State issuing the license then such character D is provided with a top flange D engaging the groove in the upper bar A, and one end of the flange D terminates in a vertical member D extending in the groove B of the end bar A and the member D States, and a in the county of terminates at its lower end in a flange D engaging the groove B, in the bottom bar A so-as to properly support such short character D in the opening of the frame A, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 1. The end bar A is preferably provided with a section A normally fastened in place by screws E, and when the said section A is removed access is had to the entrance ends of the grooves B in the top and bottom bars A and A to allow of sliding the desired sign characters into position in the frame A. After this has been done the section A is replaced and fastened in position by the screws E. By the arrangement described any individual characters D for forming ,a desired sign can be readily placed in position in the frame A.
The fixed member of the end bar A is provided with sidewise-extending arms F provided attheir ends with slots F en aging the vertical post G of a bracket G ac apted to be fastened to the vehicle, and the said post Gr also engages a keeper H attached to a lamp I of the usual construction, the lamp having a side light I for illuminating the sign during the night so that the characters D are clearly "isible. The screws J screw in the arms F and engage the post G to securely fasten the arms in position on the said post of the lamp support or bracket G.
The sign shown and described is very simple in construction, and the characters D for forming the legend to be displayed can be readily interchanged to correspond to a given legend, and by arranging the sign relative to the lamp I the latter properly illuminates the sign during the night.
The arms F are curved rearwardly, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2, so as to clear the rim of the side light of the lamp when used with lamps having rims projecting beyond the bodies of the lamps.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A sign for attachment to a lamp carrying bracket, comprising a frame, arms secured to one end of the frame to projecthorizontally therefrom one above the other and having portions intermediate of their ends curved away from the lamp, the ends of the arms having vertical and alined slots therein to receive a support, set screws in the arms at the slots thereof for engaging-- the support, and sign characters in the frame. I
2. In a sign of the character described, the
5 combination with a bracket adapted, to.
vertical'and'a1ined"s1ots through which the post of the said bracket projects, and screws in the arms and engaging the post.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 15 two subscribing witnesses.
