` ExPLosIVE-ENGINF..
To all 'whom it may concern a citizen of the United States, residingv et State of Ohio, have invented certain new gines, of-"which the following is a'speci-fica'- tion, reference being had therein to the accom panying drawing. f
This inven v"on relates to explosive engines and more particularly to valveJoperatf ing mechanism for such engines, "and ernbodies improvements upon a cri-pendingr .ap-
plication-filed bv Raymond-C. lviitel'iell'ml Harry M. Neer 'November 28th, 1910, `Serial No. 594,433. l
The principal object -of this invent-ibnv to provide a valve operating mechanism which will positively move both the inlet.
and exhaustvalvestowiard and awayfrom or unseat-ed, thereby eliminating the possi: bility of said valves'becoming broken. A*
Another object of the invention-istopr.- vide a yalvefactuating mech-anisnioffthe characterf describedv 1 which is Yj `extremely simple in consti-,dition and is,` therefore,

construction .of the several cylinders' and of the valve operatingmechanism there or is substantially the same and the descrip:-
tion of asingle cylinder and vits val-reoperating mechanism is deemed to be sufficient. Each cylinder is formed with an michaelhamber 8 and an exhaust chamber 9' which rcY spectively communicate with supply and e' preferably arranged on the- `op unseating the inlet and exhaii'stf valves-at' which are arranged in Vpairs/fort* have ill ust-ratedone embodiment of -my 'invention' and have, shown (he same as applied to a. multiple. cylinder automobile engine,v the imain featurcs of construction of which arev wellV known.` Each cylinder is indicated at and operating in each cylinder'isa; piston These. @han pos haustv pipes 10 and- 11.

l' ln order lo cushion the valves wheuheiug seated; and then-hi' pr'weut the same from bccmnmg broken, (hcw is provided a yieldalilc connection bdwaem the horizontal arms of the crank levers and respective valvestems. In the present instance, each connection consists o f an auxiliary lever 30 whichiis disposed directly below the horizontal arm24 and is centrally fulcrumed as at 31 to an ear 32 which depends centrally from said arm. One end of the auxiliary lever is forked as at 33 to engage in the groove 16' directly below the head 17 of the respective valve stern, and'disposed between the other'end of the. auxiliary lever and the respective horizontal arm 24 is a cushioning element' which in this instance is shown as a coil spring 34.
From the foregoing it that when the-horizontal arm 24 is' swung downward by the action of the cam to unseat the valve, movement will be directy ing its limit of u ward movement, the spring wi l expand an .rock the auxiliary lever, and the latter will, by. its engagement with the head 17 of the valve stem, reseat the valve, as will be readily understood.
While I have shownand described one embodiment of my invention it will be underst'ood that this has been chosen' for the purpose of illustration only and that I do not desire to be limited to the details of construction shown and described, for ob" vious modifications will occur` to a person skilled in theart.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1..- In a'valve operatin mechanism, the combination, with a cylin er having a port, and a valve includin a stem for closing said port, of aositively operated valveactuating lever ulcrumed on the cylinder and having one .end disposed above and normally in direct contact with the' upper end olthe valve stem for-positively' unseating the valve upon the down stroke of said lever, and a connection between the lever and the stem for reseatiiig the valve immediately following the limit of the up stroke of the lever.
2. In a valve` operatin mechanism, the.
coInl'Jimit-ion, with acylin er having a port,J
and a valve including a stem for closing said Vwill be observed port, of a.4 positively operated valvenctnaing lever fulcrurned on the cylinder and having one' end disposed above and normallv in ing lever fulcrumed on the cylinder and having one end disposed above and normally in direct Contact with the upper end of the valve stein for positively unseating the valve upon the down strokeof said/lever, an auxiliary lever fulcrumed intermediate its ends to the valve-actualingilever--and having pivotal connectio"`at .onelend with the valve stem, and a coil spring interposed between the valve-actuating lever and the other end of the auxiliary lever arranged to be compressed dnring the isp-stroke of the valveactuating lever and toJexpand immediately following the limi-tnofupward movement thereof to rock theianxiliary lever to reseat' the valve. v v
4. Ina valve operat' mechanism', the combination,v with a. cyliiier having a port, and a valve including-a stem for closing said port, said stem being formed' adjacent its end with a groove and at its lend with a ing lever fulcrumed on. the cylinder and having one end disposed above the headof the stem, an adjusting screw carried by said lever for engagement with said head, an auxiliary lever fulcrumed intermediate its endsy to the valve-actuating lever and having oneend forked to receive the grooved portion of the stem, and a coil spring interposed between the valve-'actuating lever and the other end of the auxiliary lever arranged to compressed during'the up stroke of the valve-actuating lever and to expand im- Y mediately following the limit of upward movement thereof to lock the auxiliary lever to reseat the valve.
In testimony whereof, affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
