Description

R. J. HOLZHAUSEN.
EMBALMING PUMP.
APPLIGATION FILED JAN.11, 1913.
1,065,129, Patented June 17,1913.
WITNESSES: INVENTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFTQE.
RICHARD J. HOLZHAUSEN, OF ESTPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE EMBALM- EBS SUPPLY COMPANY, OF WESTPORT, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CON- NECTIGUT.
EMBALMING-PUMP.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD J. HoLZ- IIAUSEN, citizen of the United States, residing at lVestport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Embalming- Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention pertains to pumps such as used by embalmers; and it contemplates the provision of an embalming pump that is at once simple and inexpensive in construction, reliable and efficient in operation, and not liable to be impaired by a fall or rough usage.
The invention in all of its details will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective of a pump constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged diametrical section taken through the cylinder portion of the pump and showing certain elements in elevation.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in both views of the drawings.
Among other features the novel pump comprises a suitable packed piston 1 having a rod 2 that terminates at its outer end in a finger-receiving ring 3.
The piston is movable rectilinearly in conventional manner within a cylinder, and this latter is made up of a barrel 4:, a head 5, and a head 6. It will also be observed by reference to Fig. 2 that a convolute spring 7 is interposed between the cylinder head 6 and the forward side of the piston 1; the said spring tending to expand in the direction of its length and serving to resist forward movement of the piston and assist in the rearward movement of the same. The head 5 is preferably of metal, suitably embellished, and is provided with an interiorly threaded flange 8. The head 6 is also preferably of metal and nickelplated or otherwise embellished and is provided with an interiorly threaded flange 9, and with an annulus 10; the said annulus being arranged within and spaced from and concentric to the flange 9 for an important purpose hereinafter set forth.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 11, 1913.
Patented J 11110 17, 1913.
Serial No. 741,430.
As will be observed by reference to Fig. 2 the head 6 is further provided with the appurtenances common to conventional embalming pumps, namely it has an inlet port 11, an outlet port 12, non-return valves 13 and 14', complementary to the ports 11 and 12, respectively, and nipples 15 and 16; the said nipples being connected by threads to the major portion of the head and being therefore detachable.
The barrel 4 is formed of fiber board, which is advantageous, inasmuch as it is not liable to break like hard rubber, nor to corrode like metal. At its ends the barrel 4: is reduced, and its reduced portions are eXteriorly threaded, and one of the said reduced and threaded port-ions is turned into the threaded head 5, while the other reduced portion is threaded into the flange 9 of the head 6, and is seated and confined between the said flange 9 and the annulus 10 of the head. It is essential in order to render the pump air-tight to screw the barrel 4: very tightly in the head 6, and when this is done the annulus 10 serves the important purpose of preventing the fiber board barrel from being crushed inwardly and rendered useless.
The rear head 5 is not of necessity secured on the barrel 4 as tightly as the forward head 6, because of the said head 5 being disposed at the opposite side of the piston 1, with reference to the induction and eduction nipples 15 and 16.
It is preferred to make the annulus 10 integral with the head 6, as shown in Fig. 2, but it is to be understood that without involving departure from the scope of this claimed invention, the said annulus may be formed by a ring separable from the head 6, or may be formed by a ring connected in ap' proved manner to the head 6; it being noticed in this connection that the annulus serves as an abutment for the foremost convolution of the spring 7.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. In an embalming pump, a barrel of fiber board, having a reduced and threaded end; in combination with a head having an interiorly threaded portion receiving the reduced and threaded end of the barrel; and an annulus arranged immediately against the reduced and threaded end ofthe barrel and at the opposite side of said end, with reference to the threaded portion of the head, said head and annulus being of stronger inaterial than the fiber-board barrel.
2. In an embalming pump, the combination of a barrel, of fiber board having a reduced and threaded forward end, a rear head attached to said barrel, a piston lnovable in the barrel and having a rod movable through said head, a head having an interiorly threaded portion receiving the re duoed and threaded forward end of the barrel, an annulus arranged immediately against the reduced and threaded forward end of the barrel and at the opposite side of said end, with reference to the threaded portion of the second-named head, said seeond-nained head and the annulus being of stronger material than the fiber-board barrel, and the second-named head having a port positioned within the annulus, and a eonvolute spring disposed in the barrel and interposed between and bearing against the forward side of the piston and the said annulus.
in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit-- nesses.
