AZ QAZ a g WIMESSES (HVE/VTOR mam/HA JQHN AUSTIN BEST, OF A'UGUSTA, GEORGIA.
FOLLOXVEB FOR FILING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J one 1?, till 3.
Application filed M13 27. 1912. Serial No. 711,912.
To allo /10m. firmly (011mm:
I tie it known that l. Joux M's'rm llics'r, a citizen of the United States. and a citizen of Augusta. in the county of Richmond and State of Georgia. have invented a new and useful Improvement in Followers tor Filing Apparatus, of which the follow lug is a specification.
My present invention relates generally to filing"apparatus, and more particularl to a follower or a card supportingifmember. my objectfbeing til-provide a follower having means whereby it may be readily and etl'ectively secured in adjusted position and qllltlil and easily released when desired.
it my further object to provide such means that the operator may be. free to devote. both hands to the movement of the tollower block subsequent to its release.
With these and other objects which, togetherwith the :ulvantages of my present invention. will be clearly apparent. troni the following description. my invention resides in the features of construction, arrangement and operation to be now described with respect to the accompanying drawing t'ornr ing a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure l is a transverse vertical section through a filing apparatus illustrating my improved follower block and its locking and releasingmeans in elevation; Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. i; Fig. 3 is a View similar to'l i l illustratin the ada nation of my invention to a filing apparatus enibodying a pair ol follower guides or supportingmembers arranged in horizontal aliuemeut; and Fig. l. is another similar view illustratiu; the adaptation of my inveution to a tiling apparatus embodying t'ollower guides or holding members arranged in vertical alincnient.
lt-elerriugg to these figures. my improved follower comprises. the usual Follower l )l )('l\' .\v \\'llltll movably mounted upon its guide or holding rod 1).
Mounted upon the rear tare ot' the tollower bloel; is 2 locking rod (5. said rod eomprisiu; an upper upright portion w, ter lllllltlllllfg at its upper end in a bent handle t". and a low r angular portion 1-. the extremitv ol which is pivotally wured at 1" .\s will he noted. the point of pivoting ol" the lot-hing rod (1 is in snbstantiallv horixou lal alinemeul with the guide member ll. and the upright and angular fJUl'LlUi'l$ ol' the lm'ltillg rod are movable in guides o secured to the lollower block in such a manner that movement of the rod in one direction causes its angular portion 0 to firmly engage the guide member B in such a manner as to lock the follower block against movementv thereon. In the last-mentioned position. the upright portion 0 of the locking rod t. engages the shouldered portion (l of a keeper '1) also secured upon the rear surface of the follower bloch. Thus it only necessary that the upright. portion c of the looking rod he moved laterally in one direction and then slightly in a direction rearwardly "from the block A. in order to ettect, its release from the keeper l and consequently its relaise from the guide member I), as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The form ol' my invention as shown in Fig. 1 indicates the extremity of the angular portion 1' of the locking rod C as being pivoted at if by means of a screw F.
in case the follower block A, as shown in Fig.3, is to be movably mounted upon a pair of horizontally alined guide members ll and B a locking rod l similar in construction to the rod t. previously described, may have the extremity of its lower angular portion f loosely coiled about the guide member 13* whereby to t'orm its pivot and can able the said angular portion to bear against. the other guide member ll; as will be clearly seen. Should the follower .U, as shown in Fig. 4, be movably mounted upon vertically alined guide members it and B", as shown in Fig. 4, however, the same construction as illustrated in connection with Fig. It is em: ployed to operate in connection with the lower of the guide members it.
Thus from the foregoing. it. will\be uuderstood that with the parts in the locked position as indicated in the several figures in tall lines, it is simply necessary to grasp the upper handle end of the locking rod, and move the same laterally. and theme. slightly to the rear of the t'ollower block in order that it may be released tron] its keeper and at the same time release the block for movement. l rom-this it will be apparent that iuasuuu-h as the locking rod does-not need to be held in the released posit i n. the operator is free to use both hands in sliding the t'ollower block to the position desir d. this being ol' considerable. advantage. espe ially where only a single follower guide rod is pl'm idi-d as the block. it canted ineli'ecti we.
I claim: l. A follower for filing apparatus, C0111 oiling the combination with a guide or Molding member, of e, follower block movxiii?) on said member, it looking rod having on uprightportion and an angular end porlion, the extremity-of which latter end portion is pivoted in substantially the same horizontal plane with the said guide or holding member whereby lateral movement of 1 the upright portion will cause the said engulnr portion to bear against the said guide or holding member and friotionally engage therewith, and a keeper mounted on thefollower block and with which the said up 4' l s, na ilUllilliy engage right rod portion is engng'enbleto maintain the rod in engaged position against the guide or holding member.
2. A follower for filing apparatus, comprising the combination with a pair of wide or holdin members in horizontal,
ulinement, of a follower block movable on both of said members, a locking rod having an upright portion and a lower angular end portion, the extremity of which latter is loosely bent around one of the guide memhers whereby lateral movement of the upright rod portion will cause the said angulargiortion to friotionally engage the other 111 follower block and with which the said upright rod portion is engageoble to hold its said angular portion against the said guide member.
