Be it known that I, FRANCIS S. HIGGINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Framing- Squares, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to instruments for facilitating framing calculations.
It contemplates the provision of a framing instrument constructed in such manner and possessed of such characteristics that practically all of the problems that arise incidental to framing operations may be quickly and easily solved.
Other advantageous features of the'invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part hereof, in which Figures 1 and 2 are plan views of the instrument showing the same set for di'erent purposes hereinafter explicitly referredto. Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view showing the pivotally connected members of the instrument as relatively arranged and adjustably fixed with respect to each. other to form a T-square. Fig. 4C is an enlarged perspective of one of the slidable members of the device. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view of one end portion of the intermediate member-z'. e., the member that extends between and is designed to cooperate with the pivotally connected members. Fig. 6 is an enlarged perspective of the second slidable member. Fig. 7 is a detail section showing the manner in which the intermediate member is connected with the second-named slidable member.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
The pivotally connected members 1 and 2 are each graduated along one edge, as indicated by 3, the divisions being by preference in inches and twenty-fourths of inches. The pivotal connection is effected through a pintle 1 atthe point of intersection of the graduated edges so as to permit of one member being moved relative to the other from the/*position where the graduated edges coincide to an angle of ninety degrees. It will also be noted here that the pivotally connected member 2 has an arcuate slot 5 which Specification of Letters Patent.

One slidable member of the instrument is numbered 7, the other slidable member 8, and the intermediate member 9. In the preferred embodiment of my invention the member 7 comprises a body 10, channeled at 11 to receive the particular pivotally connected member 1 or 2 on which it is positioned, a transverse bar 12 fixed on the body and bridging the channel thereof. a thread'- ed post 13 rising from said bridge bar, and a screw 111 bearing in one side wall of the referred to channel and designed to be set against the edge of one pivotally connected member to adjustably tix the member' 7 thereto.
Like the slidable member 7 the slidable member 8 comprises a body 15, channeled at 1G, and provided in one side wall of the channel with a set screw 16a. Said member 8, however, diiiers from the member 7 in that it has alned recesses 17 in the side walls of its channel; also, in that its threaded post 13 rises from the bottom of one of the recesses 17. ll he threaded post 13 of the member 7 is equipped with a thumb nut 19` designed to be set against the intermediate member 9 at an intermediate point in the length thereof, and the threaded post 18 of the member S is provided with a similar nut 20, designed to be set against said intermediate member 9 at one end thereof, Figs. 1-3. Each of the slidable members 7 and 3 is provided, as shown, with graduations at opposite sides of its channel, this in order to assure the location of slide graduations adjacent the graduations on the pivotally` connected members when the connected slidable members 7 and 8 and intermediatemember 9 are reversed on the pivotally connected members 1 and 2 as will be understood by comparison of Figs. 1 and 2. The intermediate member 9 is slotted, at 30, to receive the threaded post 13 of slide member 7, is preferably graduated adjacent both of its edges shown; the graduations being similar to those of the members 1 and 2, and is provided in one end with a notch 31 to receive the post 18, as best shown in Fig. 7.
The adaptability of the device to be used after the manner of an ordinary T-square is illustrated in Fig. 3, the slide members 7 and 8 and intermediate member 9 being in that case removed `from the membersfl and 2, which are fixed bythe nut Gain positions at right angles to each other. I would also` have it here understood that withhthe .meme bers 7, @Sand 9 removed, the members l and 2 may be so positioned relative to each other as to serve the purposes of an ordinary bevel. This latter, however, I have deemed itunnecessary to illustrate.
In use of the device, tor instance, in determiningvthe,lengthof rafters, the perpendicular blade 9 is adjusted =upon the base member .l ,to a number representing half v.the .width of thebuilding. The ymember 2,
which may be `termed `a hypotenuse-blade, is then raised, `so.that the 'figure on the Perpendicular blade representing the rise ,of
,the root upon the'hypo-tenuse blade will indicate thelength of the rafter. The angle between vthe :members 2 and9 Agives the top cut and that betweentlie members land 2 vgives the bottom cutvot the rafter, ywhile the angle at the pivot or members l andQis the angle for the seat bevel at the lower end of the rafter. By different adjustments the device `may,beemployed to l give the rise of a roof, the side bevel of jack rafters, the
length of jack rafters, and the length, angles andbevelstor hip rafters, etc.
It will` be understood `trom the foregoing that when either of therslidlable membersof the instrument is grasped and l moved, the
intermediate member 9 willmove the other connection, the kerf 41 in the end of member 8 serves to receive the ,member l.
