ELECTRIC GUT-our.
fBe iit"l nown that il, THOMAS E. RAY, Jr., residing at New York, in the vcounty of State of New York, have invented-'a certain. new end useful :Improvement -in 'Electric 'Gut-Outs, of which the following is fa specification.
The invention is -an electric cut-out, designed .for use in connection with fuse carriers .having exposed fuse strips von -their opposite sides, -`which coperate with Vcontacts on ythe base. l.The construction is such thaton-e'or Imore-carriers may be mounted detachebly on a` pivoted support, whereby they may hefnoved into and out of cooperation y with vsaid I4contamts. The support niej be -'operated from the exterior yof a sealedcasing inclosing the parts.
LInfthe'faecornpanying drawings Figure l. is fa. longitudinal section of my cut-out on Munwith 'the cover removed, the casing being in Ihorizontal section on the line y, y of Fig. 1. Figfshows a-'use carrier in perspeetive.

The fuse carrier l comprises 'a block 2 of insulating material, fin 'which is `set a thin plate-3 of 'lilrernaterih The middle contracted rportion of the fuse strip 4 Vis disposed fin-n .recess 'in the upper edge-oi' said plate. =`Saitl strip is doubled over the edge of the 'plate soithat-its arms are in Contact iwith opposite sides ot said plate andfsaid block. Theends of the strip are securedin any suitable Vvway to the bottom When the "fuse, is 'lilo\v.n, rupture "taires fplace at the Acontracted porof lthe 'fact that ythe current niovesfinopposite directions in `the ar-msofthe strip on-opposi-te sides otplate 8, repulsionf'takcs placebetween f the fields surrounding'said arms, whereby said arnis are forced asunder,'sotliat wideseparation of the ends of theblownfuse is thus assured. A fuse constructed on this principle is disclosed in my copending application, Serial No, (S9-2,258, filed vApril-22, 1912,
and is not herein claimed. "My present de-Y,

insertion and removal (if-suche. inse carrier in one or more circuits. 1
The base v5 is preferably' of retractorjY f'three longitudinal recesses. in each recess is a plete 6 'turned upwardly at its inner 4end to form a 'vertical Contact '7. At the vopposite end of the-recess is a similar pleite 8 turned upwardly at its inner end to form a vertical contact The plates are v'separated, and the contacts 7 and Qstand opposite one another to'receive between ythem the fuse carrier l, which is placedso that vthe `arms ofthe fuse strip on thciopposite sides of block 2 respectively meet said con- "t-acts.V Une circuit terminal, as'lOyis connected to plate G, and corresponding circuit thus being` closed Vthrough the fuse strip?.
Journaled Ain lugs l2 on the outer 'walls "of base 5 is a shaft 13. Between saidlugs said shaft is polygonal in cross section, and =carries three arins li. To the upper `side of said arms is secured 'a cross bar 215 ot insulating'rneterinh having lateral lproiec-v fbetween the base block recesses. Extending also from each of said arms and parsllel to projections lil is a split rod 1T, which enters an opening 1S in the yfuse carrier l, =and is compressed in said opening, so that the carrier when placed on said "rofl is ltightly held thereon. The shaft 13 extends `through a wallof a metal casing 19 which Icovcrs thedevice. Said casing-may be sefcui'ed to a wall or other support by internal lugs 20. Outside of said casino, shaft-13 lcarries a handle 2.1, by which 'it may be rocked. The casing is provided .with a yhinged cover 22 secured by a. suitable seal. Jfastening 23. Three circuit leads are here shown provided with 'the usual threaded sheaths which -are secured in the endV wells of the casing by suitable nut-s.
in operation, the cover 22 is removed, and the several fuse carriers are placed upon 'the several rods 17. The handle 2.1 is turned 'vertically, bringing said. carriers between the several pairs of contacts 7, 3, and hence theuse strips into circuit. The cover is closed, and theseal fastening applied. The iiuse carriers can be lifted outwof their coninsulating material, and is here shown with Iterminal v11 is connected to plate 8, circuit tions 16 which extend over the partitions.
Cri
4separated contacts thereon, a tuse carrier .taets tacts by moving the handle in suitable direction, and replacedby restoring the handle to its original position. This can be done Without disturbing the cover. The projections 16 prevent possible Contact of adjacent fuse strips after 'the arms have been thrown asunder in the manner previously explained.
