Specification of Letters Patent.
Originalapplication filed July 26, 1904, Serial No. 18,192. Divided and this application fled June a, 1910. Serial No. 567,677.
T 0 all wlwnt it may concern:
Be it known that I, Laxsixo Oxnannoxn, a citizen of 'the United States, residing at- New York. in the county office York. State of New York, have invented certain new chines,- of which the-following is-a descriptionfreference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in sewing machines, and more especially to sewing machines wherein the' fabric. is trimmedin advance of the stitchfabric covered by overseaming stitches. It, is apparent, however, from certain aspects of tie invention, that the same may be apin the devices 'set, forth in the appended. claims are adapted to secure the functions This application is a division of my application 'which matured into Patent No. 902,974, dated June 28th,191(l. I
An object of the invention isto provide a covcr'pla'te for certain parts of the stitchforming mechanism, which cover plate preother portions of the material, from in any wayinterfering. with the operating parts of the machine in the rear of the cover plate,
stitch-forming elements in the rear thereof. A'further' object of, the invent10n 15; to provide av work support wlth an extension so as-to enable access ,to 'a removable cover plate locatedin the rear thereof.
A further object of the invention is to relative to a trimming mechanism as to defeet the trimmed off strip out of the way of the stitching elements.
A further object of the invention'is, to provide a work snpport having a cover plate of the above character, and an entension or hand rest, which extension is so spaced from the cover plate as to allow a space for the passage of the trimmed off st'rip.--
A further object of the lIlVGIltlOn lS to means for adjusting the same: Fig.
PatentedJune 10, leis;
provide a cover plate which isreadily "adjustable to cooperate with the trimmer in its various adjusted positions. j These and other objects of the invention will be in part obvious. and will 'be in part hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings,--I*igure 1 is a front view of a sewingnlach ne having my improvements applied thereto; Fig. 2 isa de-- tail perspective showing the relation of the nor of holding'the adjusting bolt for the trimmer;'Fig-. 5 is a detached view, showing the lower .trimmer, its support and the 6 is a detail in perspective. showing a portion of the cloth plate, thethroat plate,'tri1nmer support and the cloth plate extension-in re.- tracted position; Fig. 7 is a detail in perspective, showing the .cover plate open to give access to the parts in rear thereof; Fig. 8 is a section through thecover plate, showing the manner of yieldingly supporting a section of the cover plate;'l "ig. 9 is'a detail perspective showing a modified form of -a portion of the cover plate; Fig. 10 is a per-- spective view of the same from a ditferent point; and Fig. 11 is a detail, showing the locking bolt for the cover plate. j
The sewing machine as herein shown. consists'of a bed plate 1, an overhanging-arm 2.
in which is 'reciprocated a needle-bar 3 car- ,rymg a needle 4'.
A needle lever 5 pivoted at 6 to' the overhanging arm, is vibrated by means of the link connection 7 with an eccentric on the main shaft 8.
dotted lines in Fig. 1. Cooperating with the needle above the work. support, and with said first named thread-carrying implement,
is a threaded looper 10.
The trimming mechanism consists of an upper trimmer blade 11. which is supported and described in the patent granted to .R. G.
WVoodward' and myself, November 27th,
Cooperating ,w1th the needle beneath the work support.
as fully shown and described in the parent and operated by mechanism such as shown 1906, No. 837,106. The'means for operating the trimming mechanism will, therefore, not be further described.
The lower trimming blade 12 cooperates with the moyable blade '11, and is carried by a support 13, which is slidingly connected to the work plate 14 of the machine. Said support 13 is moved back and forth by a screw 15, which is provided with a reduced neck engaging a yoke 16 formed in a bracket attached to the cloth plate. By turning the screw 15, the support 13 and lower stationary trimming blade may be adjusted laterally relative to the line of feed. The line of feed is indicated by the feed slots 17. shown in Figs. 2 and 6.
It will be noted that the trimming mechanism is in advance of the stitching mechanism. In order to properly deflect the trimmed ofi' strip'of fabric away from the stitching mechanism and -the operating parts of the machine, I have provided a cover plate 18. Said cover plate 18 is hinged to a bracket 19, secured to the bed plate l by screws 20. Said cover plate, as
clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 7 consists of an upright part, a. rearwardly inclined part and a substantially horizontal part, which not only covers and protects the elements of the stitch-formingmechanism beneath the work support, but also the eccentrics for operating the needle lever and other parts of the machine. the cover plate 18 is a guiding or deflecting plate 21. An arm 22 is secured to the guid ing plate 21 by means of screws 23, which extend through slots formed in the cover plate and allow the guiding plate a limited longitudinal sliding movement on the cover plate. A spring 24: mounted on a guiding pin 25 is securedto a-rigid bracket 26 on the inner face of the cover plate, and normally presses the guiding plate 21 toward the stationary trimmer or the cloth plate. When the cover plate 18 is in the position shown in Fig. 2, the guiding plate 21 extends substantially at right angles to the line of feed. and is positioned so as to intersect the line of feed at a point slightly in rear of the trimming point. Said guidingw plate 21 is also pressed by the spring 24 close against the stationary trimmer. so that the parts in rear of the cloth plate and guiding plate are completely housed. The guiding plate 21 extends above the upper edge of the cloth plate 18 and above the plane of the work support, and.is inclined slightly forward. The trimmed ofl' strip after leaving the trimmer, will engage the guiding plate 21, or deflecting device, and be bent downward and forwardly toward the front of the machine, where it may be disposed of. It will be seen, therefore, that I have provided a construction of machine wherein the cloth plate is located almost Slidably mounted upon said cloth plate, and protects the operating parts of the machine.
In -Figs. 9 and 10 I have shown a guiding plate or deflecting device which is of slightly different form from that shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 7. I have also shown in these figures. the guiding plate provided with an upwardly extending part 27. This upwardly" extending part will be pressed against the stationary trimming blade, and will prevent the trimmed ofl strip being deflected laterally underneath the cloth plate at a point in front of the cover. plate.
It will readily be seen that when the lower stationary trimmer is adjusted, the guiding plate which spring pressed thereagainst will yield to allow the trimmer to take its new position without requiring any adjustment of'the cloth plate by the operator.
The cloth plate 14 is provided with :1 lat eral extension or supplemental cloth plate 28, which is substantially flush with the upper face of the cloth plate, and serves as a hand rest for the operator. This extension projects to the right of the trimming line,-
as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Theextension is formed aspart of an arm 29, which is pivoted at 30 to the cloth plate. A spring bracket 31 engages the under face of the arm 29, and aids in providing a rigid support for the extension.
The object of pivoting the extension 28' is so that said extension may be swungoutward, as shown in Fig. (3, to allo'w the throwing back of the cover plate when access is desired to the ")arts of the machine in rear of the cover plate. Said extension is also spaced from the deflecting device carried by the cover plate, so to allow sufficient room for the trimmed off strip to pass down between said extension and the.
cover plate.
The cover plate is held in closed position by a spring bolt 32, as shown in Fig. 11. which engages an aperture 33 formed in the cover plate. This bolt is normally spring pressed outward. and will yield to a pull on the cover plate to allow the same to open.
