ARTIFICIAL TOOTH.
Application fued July 17, 1912. Iserial No. 7110.047.
To aZZfw/mme'f may concern: f vided -with the usual `grinding; cusps, 2 and Be it known that I, Josnrn: A. GARDNER, a citizen of` the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Artificial Teeth;
an integral buccal portion 5 being provided with a plane lingual surface textending .atan angle of approximately 5'o :to a .perpen dicular'to saidfiat-base face 4', and recessed base face. An integral ilug 8 projects from said fiat base face mbeneaththe depressionr, and is provided with la plane Wall 9 extending angularly to said base lface; said .ntegral lug constituting a reinforcement for Strengthening the occlusal .porcelain tooth at the point ing depression 3 therein, extending parallel Walls 6 and 9 cooperating with a correspondingly Shaped shoulder 10 on a metal backing 11 to prevent rockin. of the tooth. The fiat base face et and Shou 7 constitute flat bearing faces, which extend past, or outside of, the grindin cusps 2, for firmly Seating in the metal bac ing to posi.- tively prevent all tilting or rocking of the tooth by pressure exerted on said cusps lin use.
lVhere it is desired to use the above de-' scribed tooth with a rubber or plastic backing, an under cut recess can be readily grooved across thelingual surface 6 of the a full, clear, and exact desc `ption of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and My invention relates to improvements in artificial teeth, and it consists in the construct-ions, combi-nations and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide improved artificial teeth .which can be firmly anchored in position without the use of weakening recesses or pins.
A further object of my invention is' to provide strong and attractive artificial teeth, which render possible the constructionof a single crown or a bridge of anterior bicuspids and molars with porcelainlibial buccal and occlusal surfaces, thereby preventing the unsightly appearance of Gold.
A further object of my invention is to provide improved artificial teeth having fiatv bearing surfaces extending outside of their grinding cusps for firmly Seating in a metal backing to positively prevent all tilting or rocking of the teeth by the' pressure exerted on said cusps or cutting edge in use.
A further object of my invention is to provide interchangeable, artificial teeth and backings which enable bridges or single crowns to be readily repaired in the mouth without removing the framework.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, and in which similar reference symbols indicate corresponding parts in the Several views:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a porcelain of the weakenment before baking..
Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate a modificationl of the tooth shown in Fig. 1, in which an under cut lug 19 extends from the flat base face 4 of the tooth integral with the buccal portion. This provides means for positively interbacking 20.
Fig. 4 iilustrates a -modification of the tooth shown in F ig. 1, in which the lin ual surface of the buccal portion is provlded with a groove 21 for lockingly engaging a ceiving the material of a rubber or plastic backing. i Y
Fig. 5 illustrates a construction similar to Fig. 1 of a facing base face 32 and the Shoulder 33 constitute flat' bearing faces,which extend past, or outinvention, the metal backingfor said tooth being shown in section; Fig. 2 ,is a View simi-l lar to Fig. 1, illustrating a modified construction; Eig. 3 is an elevation from the left hand Side of Fig. 2; Fig. 4t is a view similar to Fig. 1, illustrating a further modification; A Fig. 5 is an elevation similar to Fig. 1, `of -whe'reby the tooth will be firmly supported in the metal backing and all tilting or 'rocking of the tooth by pressure on its cutting Referring tc the drawings, 1 indicates the edge will be positively prevented,
occlusal portion vof a porcelain tooth proportion of the i side of, the 'cutting edge 34 of the toothgdepression 3, and having a flatbase face, 4;
to .provide a shoulder 7 aspaced lfrom said D and said angularlyder biscuit at the angle 12 by any sharp instrulocking with a correspondingly shaped metal y shoulder 22 on a meta-1 lbacking 23, on reor tooth, in which the flat I have illustrated and described the preferred and satisfactory construction, but changes could be made Within the spirit andi scope of my invention. y
5 What I claim is 1. An artificial tooth comprising a body portion provid ,d With an occlusal portion having a fiat base face and formed with an unrecessed integral lug extending downco respondingly-shaped backing.
24a-:An artificial tooth comprising an cclu vportionhaving a fiat base face, and a Ahuccal portion at an angle thereto having an v15 20v tending at an obtuse angle to said flat base ling. cusps,
`face and provided'vvith a shoulder spaced from the latter.
' 4. An artificial tooth comprising an occlusal portion provided With the usual grinding Qusps and intermediate depression and having a flat base face, andan, integral unrecessedlug' extending from said fiat base face'beneath such depression for engaging A a backing.. Wardly from said base face for engaging a 5'. An"artificial tooth comprising an occlu sal portion provided with the usual grindand formedfwith spaced bea-ring faces extending outside of said eusps for y firmly seating in a hacking.
In testimony whereof,I aiix my signature,-
