VALVE FOR CLOSET-TANKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 10, 1913.
Application filed March 29, 1912. Serial No. 687,286.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GENNARO DE ROSA, a citizen of Italy, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Valves for Closet-Tanks, of which the following is a specification.
The general object of this invention is the provision of a valve for a flush tank which is so constructed as to effectually control the passage of water from the tank into the flush pipe; and to this end the invention consists of certain novel arrange ments constructions and combinations of devices which will be hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the appended claim,
In carrying out the object of the invention generally stated above, it will. be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are susceptible to changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment being shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the valve tank constructed in accordance with the invention, the valve being shown in open position. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view similar to Fig. 1, showing the valve in closed position. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line adjacent the lower end of the valve. Fig. 1 is a detail perspective of a collar which forms a portion of the valve.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which like reference characters designate similar parts, 5 indicates a flush tank of any ordinary well known construction having an opening 6 in the bottom thereof for the reception of an externally threaded bushing C having a flange 7 adapted to engage the inner surface of the bottom of the tank 5 contiguous to the opening 6 therein. The bushing C is retained in position by means of a ring H which is threaded upon the external thread portion of the said bushing which engages the exterior of the bottom of the tank. Also threaded upon the bushing C is a flush pipe 8.
Carried by the top of the tank 5 is a vertically arranged bracket 9 in which is pivoted an operating lever 10 to one end of which is secured a chain 11, the other end of said lever being adapted to work through an opening 12 formed in the top of said tank. The last mentioned end of the lever 10 has connected thereto a hanger F which is substantially triangular-shaped in section. A cylindrical shell A having a closed upper end is connected to the hanger F by means of a stem E which eX- tends longitudinally of the interior of said shell and which is provided with a threaded upper end 13 adapted to project through the closed end of the shell and engage the said hanger F, said stem being retained in position by means of the nuts G. The lower end of the stem E is slidably mounted in a spider 14 which is mounted interiorly of the bushing C, said stem having at its lower extremity a head 15 adapted for limiting the upward movement of the shell A when the valve isbeing opened. The shell A is provided adjacent the upper end thereof with a plurality of transverse openings 16 for the admission of air into the stem during the operation of flushing.
Adjacent the lower end of the shell A the same is provided with an annular flange 17, said flange having in engagement therewith a rubber gasket I which is adapted to engage the upper or inner end of the bush ing C when the valve is in a closed position thus preventing the escape of water from the tank into the flush pipe 8. The lower end of the shell A is also provided with external threads adapted to receive the internal threads 18 of a collar B which is adapted to project into the bushing C when the valve is in a closed position, said collar being provided with oppositely disposed irregular openings 19 through which water is admitted from the tank into the flush pipe 8. The valve is maintained in closed position by means of a retractile spring D which is coiled about the stem E and which has its ends secured to the spider 14: and one of the nuts Gr. It will thus be seen that by grasping the chain 11 and pulling down on the same, the operating lever 10 will be actuated to raise the shell A in the tank 5 thus exposing the openings 19 in the collar B and permitting the water from the tank 5 to pour into the bushing C and thence into the pipe 8.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that the invention contemplates providing a valve for a flush tank which is simple in construction, thus reducing the cost of manufacture of the same to a minimum and which is durable and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
lVhat is claimed is The combination with afiush tank formed with an opening, a bushing secured in said opening, a shell mounted in said tank and having a valve lip to engage the edge of the' bushing to prevent the escape of water from the tank, an operating lever connected to the shell, the connection preventing rotated movement of the shell, a spider arm bridging the bushing, a rod connected to the shell and slidably mounted in the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing arm, a spring encircling the rod and bearing on the spider and against the shell and a collar removably secured to the shell formed with opposing openings in the wall thereof, said collar being secured to the shell below the valve lip thereof and the openings therein formed to permit the collar to embrace the spider arm when the shell is in lowered position.
