Trim-WRITING MAoHiNE.
Be it known that I, FnANn A. YoUNG, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing in I Tevv York, in' the county of New York and State .of New York,` have invented certain new and. useful Improvements vin Type-VVriting Machines, of vWhich the following is a speci- This invention relates to' the ribbon-vibrating .mechanism of typewriting machines.
I 4provide uponthe long arm of the lever Which operates the ribbon-carrier or vibrator, an open bearingor the detachable vibrator and a locking projection adjacent tol the 'open' bearing. i Wvhen'- a type-key -is struck a sharp blow, should'the' vibrator slide along vlaterally in its bearing, it willt abut against the .abrupt face of the' projection and ivillbe held from disengagement.
.The projection thus constitutesya lock for holding -t-he vibrator from disengagement `with the lever. IVith this constructionot lever it isas'sured that'thc vibrator will not -become accidentally disengaged' from the lever, and that it will receive the movement necessary to raise the ribbon to thefproper position over the print-point during the operation of themachine. Although the vibratorI when' inserted'upon vthe lever is locked from accidental disengagement, it is nevertheless readily removable. The short' arm of the lever is fashioned so as to be readily distortible for the purpose of increasing or decreasing its throw to vary the 'movement of the vibrator. A slight distortion of the short arm will produce consider able variation'in the movement of the long arm and hence such slight distortion willl suiiice for substantially any desired adjustment of the stroke of thevibrator.
Other features and advantages vvill hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is la sectional elevation of anUnderwood lWriting machine with, the present invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a fragment-ary perspective vien7 of the improved construction illustrating the lever connected with the vibrator and the actuator. Fig. 3 is a detaii View of the lever and it-s connection with the vibrator.
The type-bars l'with their heels 2 engage -the universal bar 3 connected to the frame 4 on which 1s mounted an actuator engaging ribbon. The lever is, mounted upon' a bracket 9 fixed to the-lift rail 10- of the' car- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 1913:... I'

riage'. 4These parts are found inthe usual types of Underwood Writing machine To. prevent the'possibility of theV vibrator being accidentallydisengaged.from the 1ever, the 'latter is "formed'ivith a depending hook 11 engaging the pin 12 othe vibrator and forming a bearing therefor.- Adjacent to. said bearing on the 'upper 4side of' the lever arm is formed an upstanding projec tion -13 having an abrupt face 14 situated in i a substantially verticalv plane, intermediate the p'ointand bend of thehook. When a type-key is struck a sharp blow, should the vibrator slip laterally -upon its bearing, it will abut` against the face 1st before the pin 1 2 hasreached the point -o'fthe hook '11.
' Thefvibrat-or is thlus locked from' accidental disengagement.l Should it. be desired to ref move the vibrator from the lever, the seg.- ment isremoved and the. vibrator can then 'be swung out, as shoivnn dotted lines in- During the assembling of the machine it is often found necessary t-o make ain-adjust# mentior the purpose of varying the movement of the ribbon-carrier or vibrator so as tocause the latter to raisethe ribbon the required amount over the print-point. F or this purpose the short arm 'of the lever is fashioned lso as to be readily.,distortible The short `arm'is thus formed of txvosub stantially elbow-shaped `Webs 15 Vwhich may be straightened out to increase the length of the short arniand hence decrease-the'mo-ve'- ment of the long arnland the 'vibrator carried thereon; or .the webs may be further vbent as by a longitudinal blow to decrease the length of the short arm and the movement of the vibrator accordingly increased. It Will be understood that a slight variation in the length of the` short arm 'will resultjn a coi-respondngljv greater variation in the movement of'the long arm and hencethe v i nator.
Variations may be resorted -to Within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may beused .Without others, as for instance the distortible 'arm may be employed on 'levers .otherwise connected with ribbon vibrators.
