ROBERT J. SCI-IANWECKEB, OF CUMBERLAND, MARYLAND.
WINDOW-SHADE.
Application filed May 17, 1911.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT J. SUHAN- wnonnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cumberland, in the county of rillegany and State of lviaryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in lVindow-Shades, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to window shades, and more particularly to the class of vertically adjustable sliding window shade brackets or holders.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character in which the window shades may be adjusted lengthwise of a window casement, independently of the winding of the shade upon its roller in the ordinary manner.
Another object of the invention is the pro-vision of a holder or bracket of this character which may be readily connected with the window casement, irrespective of the width thereof, the bracket being extensible for this purpose, and in the same is supported a window shade of the ordinary well-known type, the bracket being slidably mounted upon the window frame or casement, so that it may be positioned at any desirable point longitudinally thereof, thereby permitting the upper and lower sashes of the window to be opened for ventilating purposes, without possibility of the shade becoming torn by strong wind blowing against the same.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a holder of this character which is simple in construction, possessing few parts, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a window, showing the holder mounted thereon and constructed in accordance with the invention, the holder supporting a window shade. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view through one end of the holder, showing in detail the manner of mountingthe end guide members thereon. Fig. 4: 1s a Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June it), 1913.
Serial No. 627,725.
perspective view of the holder removed from the window.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts tl'n'oughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 5 designates the window casement or frame equipped with the usual sashes, in the ordinary well-known manner, and on which, at opposite sides at the top of said frame, are suitably mounted guide eyes 6, through which are trained pull cords 7, the same being connected to a curtain shade bracket or holder, presently described. This curtain shade bracket or holder comprises a pair of fiat metal strips or sections 8, preferably constructed from metal having the desired stiffness or rigidity, one of the sections being in overlapped relation to the other section, and adjustably connected thereto by means of a binding screw 9, the shank of which slidably engages in an elongated slot 10 formed in one section, while the screw 9 is threaded in the other section. It is evident that by loosening the screw 9, the sections 8 may be extended to retracted position, and on the tightening of the screw 9, the sections will be held in adjusted position.
Engaging the outer ends of the sect-ions 8 are U-shaped guide members 11, the same being connected to the ends of the strips by means of rivets 12, and are formed with outturned upper and lower ears 13 and 141, respectively, the cars 13 being provided with openings, through which are passed the adjacent ends of the cords 7, which are fastened thereto in any desirable manner. Thus, it will be seen that upon pulling upon the cords, the holder may be raised or lowered longitudinally of the main frame. The ears 14 are provided with suitable openings or sockets for detachably receiving the trunnions 15 of the roller 16 supporting a window shade 17 which is adapted to be wound thereon and unwound therefrom in the usual manner.
The guide members 11 are formed with vertical openings 18, in which are engaged stationary guide rods 19 fixed vertically upon the stiles of the window frame and slidably connected to the shade holder or bracket upon the window for vertical adjustment longitudinally thereof.
Fixed to one of the stiles of the window frame is a cord holding device 20, with which are connected the cords 7 for preventing the displa-cei'nent of the shade holder or bracket, after the same has been properly adjusted upon the window.
It is evident that the Window shade 17 may be raised and lowered upon the window frame and held in adjusted position, as the occasion requires.
hat is claimed is:
The combination with spaced vertically arranged stationary guide rods, of a center member, outer substantially U-shaped clips fixed to the outer end of said member and each being formed from a single piece of material bent to provide out-turned ears containing perforations, said clips being formed with apertures receiving the guide rods, guide pulleys adapted to be mounted above and contiguous to the upper ends of the guide rods, and flexible cords trained over said pulleys and engaged in the perforations provided in the uppermost ears of the clips, the said clips being of the same width with respect to the member and are adapted to form seats therein for receiving the outer ends of the bars between the ears of the said clips, the perforations in the lowermost ears being designed to receive the journaled ends of a shade roller. "In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
