- comrnnss'on FOR FILE-DRAWERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
an improved compressor for file drawers.
A further object of this invention is to provide means for automaticallylocking the compressor in any osition in the drawer.
A further object of the invention is to provide means to cause said compressor to travel uniformly at' both ends along the drawer, preventing. the compressor from getting out of its proper transverse alinement in the drawer.
These and other objects of my invention will be fully described in the specification,
illustrated in the drawings and pointed out inthe claims at the end thereof.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is. a. perspective view of the drawer provided with my improved file drawer compressor.
Fig. 2 is enlarged perspective view of the .compressor showing a fragmentaryview of the drawer partly broken away for the pur-' pose of 'illustrating concealed parts, the
L view being taken on thesection line 2"2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on the line-3"3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-'4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a perspective detail view of the locking latch for the compressor. Fig. 6 is a sectional elevation taken on the line 6"6 in 3, the supporting channels for-the rack being partly broken away. Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7--. x of Fig. 6.
In the accompanying drawings like reference numerals'frefer tolike parts.
. these channels is a rack plate 8, being shaped edto slidefln the channels 6 andEJTjis the,
In-the drawings reference numeral 1 indicates a-dia-werof ordinary construction having the front end 2, thebottom 3' and the sides 4 and 5. The upper part of the side is bent to form channels 6 andd '7.,. -which channels may if so desired, however, be separately formed and riveted to the sides of the drawer. Mountedrigidly in each'of in cross sectionas shown in Fig. 3. Mountcompressor 9, which is formed preferably of a single piece of metalwhich is cut out at the corners and bent up to form the four sides as shown at 10, 11, 12 and 13 in Fig. 2. The top 1 has the down turned -edge 14. Attached to each end of this compressor are the brackets 15 having the runners 16 formed integral therewith, adapted to engage with and run in the channels 6 and 7 for the purpose of steadying the compressor 9 in its movement along the drawer and holding it to a right line motion.
The brackets 15 are perforated for the purpose of forming a bearing therein for the shaft 17. This shaft at each end thereof has the gear Wheel 18 attached thereto,
which gear meshes witha rack 19 formed in the upper edge of the rack plate 8, which plate is bent over and down, placing the rack .19 in an inverted position and engaging the gear wheel 18 on top. By means of the racks and gear wheels and the runners 16, the compressor 9 is held to a proper right line even motion in traveling from one end of the drawer to the other.
Fastened to the compressor 9 is the bracket 20, which iracket is slotted at 21.
Mounted to reciprocate vertically in the bracket 21 is the latch 22, which latch has a runner 23 engaging with and traveling in the slot 21 in the bracket 20. At the top the latch 22 has the push button 24 connected thereto, which push button projects through the top plate 10 of the compressor 9. A
Keyed to the shaft 17 in the middle thereof is the gear wheel 26, which gear wheel revolves inside of the latch 22. The latch 22 is slottedat the side at 27 and at the bottom at 28. The ends of these slots are intended to engage with the gear wheel 26 for the purposeof arresting the motion thereof when the latch and its push button 24 are in the elevated position, thus holding the compressor 9 locked in whatever position it may be placed inthe drawer, but when depressed the gear wheel 26 is freeto rotate and the compressor 9 may then bemoved 7 Patented June 10, 1913.
Application filed December 2, 1911. Serial No. 663,620.
to a position that is perpendicular to the sides of the drawer and arallel to the'front and back of it, and that y releasing the but-- ton the compressor is automatically locked in any position in which it may be placed.
keyed to said shaft intermediate thmend's' thereof, a button supported in said com pressorand projecting through the top of said compressor having a latch thereon with which said gear wheel is adapted to engage and be locked thereby whenthe button is in its elevated position, and from which said gear wheel is disengaged and left free to rotate when said button is in its depressed position.
2. The combination in a file drawer of a compressor, channels formed in the. sides of said drawer, rack bars supported in said channels, a shaft mounted in said compressor having gears on each end thereof on gaging with said rack bars, a gear Wheel keyed to said shaft intermediate the ends W thereofya button ,sup'ported in said compressor and projecting through the top of said compressor, having a latch thereon With which said gear wheel is adapted to engage andbe locked thereby when the button is .in its elevated-position, and from which said gear Wheel is disengaged and left free to rotate when said button is in its depressed position, a spring for holding said button in, gears on said shaft, racks mounted in the and said latch in their raised position. 4 3. In a file drawer the combination of a compressor, a shaft mounted to rotate therein, gears on said shaft, racks mounted in the file drawer adjacent said compressor, said gears meshing with said racks, a gear wheel on said shaft, a latch moving transversely of said gear Wheel and adapted to lock said gear. Wheel against rotation in either direction or release-saidgear wheel.
4:, In a tile drawer the'combination of a compressor, a shaftflmounted to rotatethere file drawer adjacent said compressor, said gears meshingwith said racks, a gear Wheel 011- said shatt,-a latch moving'transversely of said gear wheel and adapted to lock said depict of this patent may be obtained fcr five cents each, by
gear wheel against rotation in either direc tion orrelease said. gearwheel, a spring engaging said latch to hold it in locking posi- 5. In a file drawer, the combination of a compressor, a shaft and gear Wheel mounted to rotate therein, a latch having .a button thereon extending up through the top of the compressor and having a slotted plate at the bottom thereof extending horizontally under the gear wheel, a spring for holding up said latch with said slot-ted plate in-engagement with said gear; wheel, a gear on each end of said shaft, racks mounted in the file drawer adjacent said compressor, said gears meshing with said racks and turning said shaft on the movement of the compressor,
6. In-a file drawer, the combination of a compressor, a shaft and gear Wheel mounted to rotate therein, a latch having a button thereon extending u through the top of the compressor and savings. guide on the bottom thereof by which itis held to a right line motion into and out of engage ment with said gear wheel, said latch being shaped to positively engage with said gear Wheel and lock .it against rotation, a gear on each end of said shaft, racks mounted in the file'drawer adjacent said compressor. sai'd gears meshing with said racks and turn ing said shaft on the movement of the corn pressor.
7. In a file drawer, theco nbination of a compressor mounted to slide therein, chair nels formed'in the sides. of sand drawer opening inward toward said compressor, brackets having two parallel plates thereon with a narrow arm connecting them, one ofsaid plates having a perpendicular flange thereon being attached thereby to the compressor and the l other plate extending into and engaging with said channel.
Y In testimony whereof afiix.my signature in pres n e of two witnesses.
