ALBERT G. WEBSTER, OF TROY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNORTO HIMSELEAND GEORGE T. SOUDDER, OF SAME PLAGE.
y Leltcr's Patent No. 106,435, lated August 16, 1870.
v:BASE-BURNING; s'rovn.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To Il 'whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, ALBERT G. WEBSTER, of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Stoves and Heaters, of which the following isa full and .clear description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which this invention pertains to understand, make, Vand use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part ot' this specification, in whichl Figure lisa central vertical section view of my invention taken in a plane through the line xx, fig.-2; Figure 2 is a horizontal section view of the same, in which that portion above the linex x'is taken in a plane through the line y y, and that portion `below the line a: :v by a plane through the line z z, iig. 1 and A Figure 3 is a horizontal section of apart of my in' vention taken in a plane through the line v v, iig. 1.
Like characters refer to corresponding parts in thevarious iigures.
The object that I have in my invention is to more ot' fuel iu stoves and heaters; and i It consists in the combination, arrangement, and construction of certain parts of stoves and heaters, as hereinafter more fully described. i
A is the combustion-chamber, which is supplied with fuel as in other stoves and heaters, either through a suitable door or doors in the side of the same above the fire, or by means of a magazine o1" feeder, B.
The combustion-chamber A is formed around or ontwo or more sides of the due or ilues O, and communicates with the descending iiue or fines D, by means of the inlets E to the same.
The combustion-chamber A, and fines O and D, with inlets E, can be made of any suitable size, shape, or material.
The fuel in the combustion-chamber A being ignited, and draught-damper F, in the communication -(direct) betweenthe upper part of the stove or heater and the smoke-pipe G, being closed, the gaseous products of combustion are caused to pass through the inlets E into the flue or ues l); thence to the base of the stove or heater, where said products of combustion are prcvented'iiom passing directly to the smoke-pipe G by the'tiuc-stl'ipor strips H, soiarranged as to project said productsl of combustion forward. and cause the saine to come in contact with the entire internal4 surface of the base 911. v
Above the base am and the smoke-fine oruestherein above formed, is formed the chamber-.1, into which air is admitted through a suitable opening or openings, (t, which air passes thence up through the Hue or fines C, and, becoming heated by contact with the internal surface of saidflue or ues C, issues from the same atvor neart-he top of the .stove or heater. By a constaut supply or current of cool air being thus brought in contact with the internal surface of the flue onues C, tle iwall or walls u of the combustion-chamber A, and also, those of the descending fine or ues D, are protected 4from burning out by the heat developed in' the combustion of the fuel in the fire-box A.
Having thus described my invention,
W'hatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters` Patent, is
1. 'The descending ue or iiues D, having inlets E, and passing through the body or center of the combustion-chamber A, and communicating with the base of the stove or heater, ,substantially as herein shown and described Vand forthe purpose set forth.
i. The combination of the ue'strip or strips H with the base of the stove or heater, and the subject of the first claim, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
3. The arrangement of the air-chamber I, having inlet opening or openings a, and the air-due or dues C, in combination with the conihustion-chamber A, and the subject of the first claim, substantially as shown and described, 'and for the purpose set forth in the above specification. K
The above specification signed by` me this 24th day of March, 1870.`
ALBERT G. WEBSTER.
