HENRY R. GILSON. OF BEAVER, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO NATIONAL METAL MOLDING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
ELECTRICAL SWITCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 10, 191 3.
Application filed April 1, 1912. Serial No. 687,828.
To `f/Y/ wlw/n.- /e may concern.:
lle it known that I. HENRY R. GiLsoN, residing at Beaver. in the county of Beaver and State oi'y Pennsylvania. a citizen of the linited Statee. have invented or discovered certain new and useful improvements in l'llectrical Hfvitches, ot which improvements the tollowinn is a Specification.
ll is the object ot' theinvention to provide an electrical switch, which shall be simple in construction and etiicient in operation; and by means of which arcing of the current when the circuit is broken will be effectively prevented.
ln the accompanying drawings the invention i5 illuetratcd in its preferred form, and as embodied in a lamp-socket. V
Figure l a plan view of the Socket connected to a section ot' conduit; Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation on the line II-ll o' Figi'. 1; Fig. 5l ie a cross-Sectional view on the line ille-lll ot Fig. 1; Figa is a plan view ot the switch with the cap and shell ot the socket removed; Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view ot the Socket on the line V--V ot' Fig. `rt: and Fig. (i is. a detail view showiupthe keV-shaft in the opposite position to that Shown in Fig.
The insulatingr block 1 of the Socket is provided with the terminals 2 and 3, and thtcoiulucting Shell kl is secured to the face ot the block in the usual or any suitable manner. '.llie terminal 2 is provided with the usual conducting strip 5 extending within the shell in position to make contact with one terminal ot' the lamp, and insulated from the shell as by the mica disk rlhc other terminal ."3 is provided with the conducting resilient strip 7 adapted to inake and break contact with the base ot the ehell -'t-, the shell, as is ueual, being adapted to make Contact with the other terminal ot the lamp when the latter ia in place. For making` and breaking contact. with the shell. the strip 7 is: preferably bent to torni a spring-arm 7 arranged in the lelot 8 in the block 1 adjacent to the outer tace ot the base of the Shell. 0n the opposite side ot the springairni in the slot mounted a longitudinally slidable key-Shaft or bar El, the said shaft being held within the slot bythe ASpring-arm. rlhe body of this shaft ie reduced in thickness, forming omweite Qhrnilrlm-Q 1n nml 11 amil lmewmm shaft a sliding dog 12 having a range ot movement between the shoulders independently of the shaft. The dog 19. is provided with an extension 13. which may have a roller 14 as shown, in position to bear against the spring' arm 7a. The springarm 7a is bent or offset .as Shown, forming an incline 15 behind Which the end of the dog rests when the spring-anni is out of Contact with the lshell. The sidca of the dog may be. extend ed laterally beyond the lines of the shaft 5i and move in a limited enlarged portion 16 of the slot 8, thus limiting the range ot' longitudinal movement of the shaft. The spr1ng-arm 7 may have a slight. depression 17 adjacent to the incline 15, whereby the spring-arm will be caused to bind upon the ridge 13 of the dogg` 12 when the circuit is closed as presently to be described.
Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing Show the circuit open, the spring-arm 7 being;` out of contact with the Shell 4, and the ridge 13 of dog 12 resting behind the incline 15 on the spring-arm. In order to close the circuit between the spring-arm and shell, the keyshatt t) is pushed to the right, and the Shoulder 10 forces the dog l2 to the right also, thus ranging,r its ridge 13 to torce the spring'- arm into contact with the Shell, the edge ot the ridge then preferably resting` in the Small depression 1T as Shown in Fig. 6. ln order to break the circuit the key-shaft is pushed to the left, and as Soon as the shoulder 1l has forced the edge of the ridge 13 of the dog 1Q over thc edge ot' the incline l5, the Spring-arm will automatically snap the dog 1Q to the left. iinleliendently ot the movement ot' the key-shat`t, thug quickly and lsharply breaking` the circuit, and etlectively preventing arcing'. The constructor will of courge proportion the parte' so as to allow suticient separation ot the spring:- arin from the shell.
ln the bane. ot the block l. is formed a slot 1H of prcper shape to receive the conduit 1f). The block may he clamped to the ronduitI by means ot lerfreute: Ll) extending through the block and engaging a suitable plate 2l cn the opposite side ot the conduit'. The aocket may be incased withina metallic cap 22, and in order to insulate the cap Vtrom the conduit the block l may be provided with a bead 23 interptsed between the edge t +L m... il... ...,i'. i' l l l/Vhile the invention is herein illustrated and described as embodied in a lamp-socket, it will of course be understood that it may be applied to the making and breaking of' contact between any suitable switch-member or circuit-controller and any member of' an electrical circuit.
I claim as my invention:
l. The combination with a fixed member of' an electrical circuit, of a movable circuit-controller having a bent away from said fixed member, and a movable key-ineinber provided with an independently movable dog adapted When the key-inember is moved in one direction to force said circuitcontroller into Contact with said fixed niember, and When the key-member is moved in the opposite direction to yield to said circuit-controller and permit the latter to automatically break the circuit.
rl`he combination with a fixed member of an electrical circuit, of a spring-arm circuit-controller arranged adjacent to Said fixed member, and a longitudinally movable key-shaft provided with a dog effective When the key-shaft is moved in one direction to force said circuit-controller into contact with the said fixed member, and when the key-shaft is moved in the opposite direction to yield to said circuit-controller and arin circuit-controller arranged adjacent to said fixed member and in one position completing a circuit therethrough, and a longitudinally movable key-Shaft provided ivitli .a dog effective when the key-sliat`t is moved in one direction to force said circuit-con troller into one position with relation to said fixed member, and when the key shaft is moved in the opposite direction to yield to Said circuit-comulller and permit the latter to automatically move' to its oppoaite po- `sition with relation to said fixed member.
4. The combination with a fixed member of an electrical circuit, of a longitudinally7 movable key-Shaft having a dog inovably mounted thereon, and a resilient contactarm arranged between the key-shaftv and fixed member and in parallel relation with the key-shaft,l and provided with an incline in operative relation with said dog.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
