Description

ELEVATOR-BMLKE.
Specification of Lettere eotent.
llutented une lill,
Application tiled .Tune e, 19123. tler'iel l'o. @delle To N whom, t may concern lle it. known tlutt l, WILLIAM CAnnAN, e citizen of the United States, residin." ut llichmond, in the county of l-lenrico, btnte of Virginie, have invented certnin new und useful Improvements in Elevator-Brakes; endl do hereby declare the following to be e full, clem', and exact description oi the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make und use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in elevator brakes, and has articular reference to a manually operated brake.
'lhe principal object of the invention is to provide a simple device for checking the downward movement of an elevetor car when the rope breaks, und meens for holding the elevator cer from further downward movement.
@their objects and edventeges will be epperent from the following description und with :articuler reference to the accompanying rewings.
lin the drawings: Figure l is e. verticul section through en elevator cur und shet showing my invention, end 2 is u similsr view showing the perte in operetive position.
lleiierring particularly to the drawings, l() represents the side guides of the elevator shelt. llorrned in these guides, et equel distances spart, und the entire length of the seine, ere the stop shoulders or ledges ll, for engagement by e portion oi? the device to be described inter. @n euch of the ledges is disposed e butler plete 11 suigported by the butler springs l2' which n' Sorb u, fgreet amount oi shock incident to the sudden engagement of the device to be described with the plete.
d car 12 is adapted to move up and down the shaft., und is provided in the center of its interior with a vertically extending tube 13, through which passes tbe'breke cable 14, which cable extends the length of the shaft, und is secured et the top und bottom thereof. Suspended beneath the door of the cer, by menus of the springs 15, is a bumper plete 16. Mounted on. the under side of the plete lo, neer the center ere the guides 17 in which are slidably mounted the cnble gripping jews 18, which ere adapted to grip the cable ll, to check the downwurd movement of the cnr when the rope 19 breaks. The function of the springs l5, it will be observed, is to absorb the shock of the cer incident to the sudden gripping of the cubic by the jews. A cord 20 is secured :it one end to one of the jaws, und hns its other secured to the lower end ot e vertically disposed stall 22, mounted in the car. @n the u per end of the stati is mounted a hund whee 22', Within easy reach of the hund or1 the operator. 0n this steli, und on e level with the lloor of the car, is e ratchet wheel 32, adapted to be engaged by the foot pevvl 33, pivoted adjacent thereto. 'lhus when the ro e breaks, the operator turns the. steil' 22, vv ich winds the crible 20 und drevvs the jews 18 into biting engagement ,with 'the cable le.
Whitt is claimed is:
l. A broke device for elevators comprising e, cable extending ccntrelly the length of the elevator sliazit, n gguide tube in the cer to receive tie crible slidably tierethrough, n spring bumper plete on the bottom oi the door olf the cer, jaws slinebly mounted on the bumper plete for engr-.giement with said cable, e rotatable steil in the cer und connections between the stall und the jews i'or moving the jaws into engagement with the crible.
2. A. brake device for elevators corriprising u, crible extending centrally the length oi the elevator shntt, e guide tube in the car to receive the cable slidebly therethrough, e spring bumper plete on the bottom of the floor of the cnr, jews slidnbly mounted on the bumper plate for engagement with seid cable, grooved pulleys on the jaws, e. rotatable stati in the car, and n cable connected to the steil at one end und to one of the jews et its opposite ond and passing over said rgrooved pulleys.
ln testimony whereof, 'i elix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
