BAIL JOINT.
APPLIOATION FILED Arms. 1912.
L64 l 39u Patented June 10, 1913.
PATENT UFFIGE.
`WILLIAM C. FULGHAM, OF TIJ'TICA, MISSISSIPPI.
RAIL-JOINT.
Specification of 'Letters Patent.
Patented June 10, 1913.
Application led August 5, 1912. Serial No. 713,481.
To all/whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. FULGHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Hinds, State of Mississippi', have invented certain new and useful lmprovements inl Rail-Joints; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to rail joints and has for an object to provide a rail joint in which the nuts will positively be held from backing off from the bolts.
A further object of the invention is to provide a rail joint having a novel abutment plate for the nuts, and having a novel locking plate adapted to interit with the abutment plate, the abutmentplate and locking plate coactmg in positively preventing rattling of the joint and escape. ofthe nuts from the bolt.
With the above objects in view the invention consists of cert-ain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the a pended claim. y
vIn the accompanying rawing forming partof this specificationz-Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved rail joint. Fig. 2 is a plan Viewof the rail joint. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional viewtaken on the line 3--3 Fig. 2. Fi 4 is a detail perspective View of one oft e fish plates. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the other fish plate. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the bed plate. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective View of the abutment plate. Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of the locking plate.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, 10 and 11 designate abutting rail ends, the heads 'of both rail ends bein removed near thev abutting end faces ot the rails as shown at 12.
A fish plate 13 is provided with a head 14 adapted to fit 1n the cut away head portions of both rails and form a continuation of both rail heads. This lish plate bears against the outer sides of both rails. A fish plate 15 of ordina character is disposed against the inner si e of both rails.
A substantially oblong abutment plate 16 is dis osed on the outer'face 'of the outer fish p ate 13, and is provided in the top edge 17 `at the central portion 18 of the plate with a dove-tail slot 19. Bolts 20 are passed through registerin openings in the fish plates and in the a utment plate, and nuts `21 are screwed on to the bolts and advanced snug up against the abutment plate.
A substantiall oblong'locking plate 22 is provided. on the inner face with a dovetail knob 23. The knob isA slipped down into and snugly conforms to the contour of the slot 19 in the abutment plate, the locking plate being positioned on the outer face of t e locking plate and bearing with the end edges against' the confronting wrench faces of the nuts 21. The locking plates positively prevent retrograde rotation of the nuts from the bolts, and the knob onthe locking plate prevents removal of the locking plate except by manual vertical movement bodil o the locking plate, the locking plate t us being anchored against accidental displacement.
rail ends 10 and 11 as shown, the bed late bearin terminally upon two juxtapose ties 25 an 26 and being spiked in position as shown at 27 What is claimed, is
In a nut lock, the combination with spaced bolts andnuts thereon, of an abtument plate having spaced openings receivin said bolts, and havin a dovetail slot in t e top edge between said o enings, and a locking plate on the outer ace'rof said abtument plate bearing with the end edges against said nuts and having a dove-tail knob on the 1nner top edge portionfittin in said slot. U
In testimony w ereof, I aflix my slgnature, in presence of two witnesses.
