TOY EFFIGY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 31, 1912.
Patented June it), 19 [3.
Serial No. 728,806.
To all whom M may concern Be it known that 1, Many M. BUCKI'JGH, a Britishsubject, and resident of Spring- .tield, in the county of llampdcn and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy l llligies, of which the following is full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvemei'its in toy effigies or creatures, the object being to devise as a novelty a simple, inexpensive and attractive article of the character indicated and one which is extremely durable, resilient in character and susceptible of being washed or cleansed.
An example of a toy made in accordance with my invention, here shown as in the senlblance of a cat or kitten, is described in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and is set forth in the claims.
In the drawings :-Figure 1. is a perspective View; Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional View from front to rear; Fig. 23 is a sectional and perspective View showii'ig the covering which incloses the body forming members of the toy.
In the drawings, the body portion A has as the form thereof a hollow rubber ball B, and a second hollow rubber ball C of considerably smaller diameter constitutes the form for the head portion D of the toy, the latter ball resting on the first named one.
E represents a covering of flexible material. enveloping the body and head forming members, the same being made as a tapered sack closed at the top and open at the bottom, having one or more layers a of padding material stitched thereto within its lower front portion; and (t represents the base plate of cardboard or other semi-rigid or rigid material provided with a covering fabric (Z, which covering fabric and the plate inclosed therein are connected by stitching as indicated at f, to the lower portion of the covering sack. The padded front portion is lined by a centrally disposed row of stitching 7 and by rows of stitching at opposite sides thereof to impart. fullness for the fore legs at the portions 72, 72, of the toy. The covering especially at the head portion is fashioned to give shape and feature to the figure as shown at 2' i for the ears, and by having the contraction produced by the band or ribbon j, and the toy is further made to have a realistic appearance by decorations such as semblance of eyes K: (as may be produced by bands sewed on or by painting), a mouth as may be produced by stitching as indicated at m, and by having strands a of brush stock or the like for whiskers; and at the lower rear portion a tail member 0 is provided.
As manifest, the invention may be carried out to make efligies in semblance of other creatures than cats or kittens.
f claim:-
l. A toy efligy consisting of a hollow resilient ball to form the body, a member superimposed on the body to constitute a head form, a cover of flexible material inclosing the body and head forming members and fashioned and decorated to give feature to the figure.
2. A toy clligy consisting of a hollow resilient ball to form the body, another resilient ball of smaller size resting on the first ball to constitute a head form, a cover of flexible material enveloping the body and head forming members and closed by stitching,-said covering being fashioned and decorated to give :leaturc to the figure.
3. A toy animal consisting of a hollow resilientball for the body, another resilient ball of smaller size resting on the first ball to constitute a head form, a cover of flexible material enveloping the body and head tforming members and closed by stitching, said covering being fashioned and det'torated to impart feature to the figure and the device having iiu-losed in the lower portion thereof a plate of suitably rigid n'lat'erial to form a base or stand.
4. A. toy animal of a hollow resilient ball nmking a form for the body, another but smaller resilient ball lying against the first named ball and making a form for the head, a cover of flexible material enveloping the body and head forming balls, closed by stitching and having a layer of padding material within the front portion of the covering,-such front portion with the layer thcrcwithin being fashioned to give the semblance of forelegs to the figure and the said covering being otherwise fashioned and decorated to impart tleature to fl 3 article.
5. A toy animal consisting of a hollow resilient ball for the body, another resilient ball on the first ball. to constitute a head forth, a cover of flexible material envelop ing the body and head forming members and closed by stitching, and fashioned and decorated to impartfeature to the figure and provided with a tail member at the lower rear portion thereof.
6. A toy animal consisting of a hollow resilient ball making a body form, another resilient ball of smaller size resting on the first ball to make a head form, a covering of flexible material enveloping the body and head forming members, the same being made as a sack closed at top and open at 10 bottom having a layer of padding material stitched thereto within a lower front portion, a base plate provided with a covering fabricsecured by stitching to the lower portion of the covering sack, the padded front portion being centrally and vertically co-ntracted by stitching to impart semblance of forelegs to the figure and the covering being otherwise fashioned and decorated to impart feature tothe toy.
