' TRUCK SIDE FRAME.
`Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 10, 1913.
Application tiled March 23, 1912. Serial No. 685,809.
T all whom, t may concern Be it known that I, HENRY F. Porn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, Cuyahoga county, Ohio, have invented an Improvement in Truck Side Frames, of which the following is a specifi cation, reference being had to the accompanying'drawings, in which- Figure lis an elevation 'of a portion of.
the side frame embodying m invention; Fig. 2 is a section on-lines II- I of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a section on lines III-III of Fig. l showing the bolster in dotted lines; Fig. 4 is a section on lines IV-IV ot Fig. l; nd Fig. 5 is a detail ot the4 bearing mem- My invention relates to truck side frames,
and is specifically directed to providing de' tacha-ble bearings or guides in the bolster window and against which the truck bolster is designed to bear.
My improved bearings protect the columns at the sides of the bolster window against wear, and while, in service, they are firmly attached to the columns, they can readily be removed and replaced when they become worn.
Referring to the drawings: 2 isa truck side trame, preferably of integral construc- 6, which connects the side frame 2 with the side trame at the opposite side of the truck. The bearingmembers 10 are adapted to be secured to the upper parts of the columns 5, which are preferably slightly recessed, and form bearing surfaces against which the sides 11 of the bolster 7 bear between the column guides 8. The bearing members 10 have bendable lugs 12 and 13 which take about the columns 5 and the horizontal flanges-11i on the bottom of the compression member 4 at the top of the bolster window, and abut at their lower ends on the offsets 15 of the columns 5. The members 10 protect the columns 5 against wear and can readily be placed in position by means ot the bendable lugs 12` and 13 'which are sledged over the edges of the columns 5 and the horizontal flanges 14, and the members l() are thus firmly secured to the columns The members 10 can also be easily removed in case of Wear by sledging free the bentover .lugsl and 13 'and thus releasing their engagement with the columns 5 and the flanges 14.
It is apparent that there will be a certain amount of wear on the sides l1 of the bolster 7 between the column guides 8` and bearing members 10, and in such case if the wear has' been mainly on the sides of the bolster, the insertion of new bearing members 10 will not give the requisite tightness .ofi
fit between these parts. VTo provide for this wear I employ a shim plate 16 which can be inserted between `one of the bearing members 10 and'its column 5. The plate 16 is held against downward movement by the offset 15 ot the column 5 and is clamped firmly to the column 5 by the bcndable melnber 10. It necessary, in order to compensate for wear, shim plates 16 can be inserted between both bearing members l() and the .corresponding columns The holster window is preferably made of suflicient cross-scctional arca to admit the bolster into the lower portion of the window while in horizontal position. It can then be raised vertically, without tilting, to its nor- .mal position between the bearing members 10 with the column guides 8 taking about the longitudinal sides of' these members 10.
It is obvious that without departing from my invention various modifications may be made in my device.
What I claim is:
1. In an integral side frame, an opening therein for the reception of a bolster, said:
opening having flanges thereabout, bearing plates positioned in the upper part of said opening and having lugs to clamp vabout said flanges, and being adapted to provide `a bearing surface for the bolster and to protect the said frame against injury.'
2. In a truck side frame, having therein an opening 'for abolster, columns at the sides of said opening, bearing plates for the bolster in the upper part of said opening adapted to be detacliably secured to said frame by bendable means'.
8. In a truck side frame, an opening for a bolster having an venlarged upper portion. and a lower portion of suficient cross-sectional area to admit the bolster in horizontal position, columns at the sides of said opening having; recessed'upper portions to provide bearing seats, -and bearing plates adapted to be detachably secured to said I columns on said bearing seats by bendable locking means.
4. In a truck side frame, an opening for a bolster havingan enlarged` upper portion,
and a lower portion of suilicient. crosssec bers, a bolster opening' therebetween, and
bearing plates` for the bolster adapted to be clamped to the upper portions of the columns by bendable means.
6. A truck side frame having columns and compression and tension members, a bolster opening therebetween, and bolster bearing plates secured to thecolumns and the compression member by bendabl'e lugs.
17. A truck side frame having columns and compression and tenslonkm'embers, a bolster opening therebetween, and bolster bearing members adapted to be clamped to the up- .per portions of said columns, and a plate interposed between one of said columns and one'of said bearing members. y
8. A bolster bearing member, comprised of a bearing plate, having bendable attaching ine-ans for attachment to a truck side frame.
9. A bolster bearingA member, comprised of a bearingl plate, having o-n its sides a plurality of bendable lugs adapted for attachment to the columns of a truck side frame.
