Patented June 3, l 91 .b all a /tom it may concern to it known that I, Bnn'r lhmjan'rr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kckoino, in the county of Howard and State o't Indiana, have invented new and useful innn'ovements in Wagon tied Hoists, of which the 'l ollowing is a specification.

This invention relates to machines for ele- 'ating wagon beds.

The prin'iary object oil the invention is to provide a machine of the character stated in which a platform or frame employed, the said frame adapted to be arranged beneath the body oi. the wagon to be elevated and being provided with retaining elements which embrace the upper portion oil the body of the wagon, the frame being further provided with a shaft having drums thereon around which are wound cables, the said cables passing over suitable pulleys and having their free ends connected with a bar which is adapted to be arranged beneath the wagon body to the rear of the frame, suitable means being provided for rotating the shaft to wind'the cables around the drums to elevate the wagon body from the running gear thereon, and simple, but ett'ective means being also providetfl for sustaining the hoisting apparatus and the wagon body in an elevated position.

\Vith the above recited objects in yiew, and others of a sin'lilar nature which will appear as the t lescription ot? the invention progresses, the im n'ovement resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement oil. parts set forth in the following description, and tailing within the scope of the appended claim.

In the drawing, igure l is a side elevation ot the device illustrating the same in the act of raising and supporting the wagon body. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the frame employed in ronm-ction with the hoist. Fig. i) is a side elevation illustrating the means of locking the toothed wheels when the body is elevated. l ig. t is a perspective view ot the hoist", the wagon body being removed.

Referring now to the drawing in detail, the numeral 10 designates an ordinary body for a Farm wagon. The hoisting means for elevating the wagon body, when the same is not to be employed upon the running gear, and when the said wagon body is to be stored for future use, embodies essentially a substantially rectangular frame 11, the same being constructtal ol. any desired material. .-\rranged transversely ot the. Frame, and to the 't'orward portion thereof is a sha H1 12, the same being journaled in suitable bearings 13 provided upon the under t'ace ol the longitudinal or side members of the Frame. An ranged upon this sha'll 12 are drums l t and 15, around which are wound a pair ot cables lti and 17 respectively. The shalt '12 projects beyond its b *aring upon one side ot the frame 11, the said projecting portion being provided with a toothed wheel '18, and the said side of the 'l'rame is 't'further provided with a smaller toothed wheel it) which meshes with the wheel 18. This wheel 19 has its shaft suitably journaled upon the frame and the said wheel lt) further providcd with a handle 20. Arranged upon the longitudinal side members o t the 'lrame 1'1. and adjacent the rear connecting beam thereof are the oppositely disposed straps 21, which are pivoted to the said members of the frame as at 'lhe upper extremity of each of the said straps 2']. is tor-med with a hook 233, the said hook being adapted to engage with the upper edges of the sides of the wagon body it). The cables 16 and 17 pass over suitable pulleys i l which are arranged dircctly above the Frame 11, said eables being continued over pulleys 2t) and extended downwardly and connected with a cross bar 28, the said cross bar adapted to engage beneath the rear portion ot the un derttiaee oi the body 10.

It will be readily noted that when the frame 11 and the cross bar are positioned beneath the body aml the crank 20 manipulated so as to revolve the toothed wheel 1%), the shaft 1) will also be rotated so as to elevate the body 10 to a desired position and height, amt when the desired elevation is reached a removable pin Lit) is arranged between the teeth of the wheel to and which is adapted to be contacted by one o'l' the teeth of the wheel it), so that a l urther revolving ot the wheels and the shaft 112 is etl'ectively prevented. liy rotating the handle 20 in one direction it will be noted that the pin will drop by gravity from between the teeth so as not to interlerc with the rotation of the shaft, nor with the lowering of the wagon body it). It will be noted fur ther, that by providing the straps 21 with the engaging hooks .23 the said straps etleetively sustain the frame 11 beneath the wagon body 10 so that accidental displacement of the frame from the body is entirely and effectively prevented.

If desired a pawl 30, which may be pivotally connected with one of the members 21, may be employed in lieu of a pin 29, as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

Having thus described the invention,what I claim is A wagon bed lifting device comprising a substantially horizontal frame, said frame having journaled thereon a transversely ar ranged shaft, drums upon the shaft for receiving the free ends of a cable, a toothed wheel upon the shaft, a second toothed wheel journaled upon and at a point adjacent one end of the frame and meshing with the first named toothed wheel a handle upon this second toothed wheel, a pin locking member for the toothed Wheels and the drums, vertically extending straps disposed on the side faces of the frame at a point adjacent the opposite end thereof, and each of said straps having its extremity bent to provide a hook which is adapted to engage with the upper edge of the sides of a wagon bed.
