GAS-ENGINE STARTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
latelltodr'lunol,15H3.
Application lcd August 2, 1912. Serial No. 712,957.
To all whom 'it may comp/rn Be it known that l, llmvooo (linnn ALLI- son` a citizen olf the uUnited States, residing' at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, Stato ot New York, have invented certain new aud useful Img n'overnents in1 Gas-lhigine Starters; and l do hereby declare the lollowing to be a t'ull, clear, and exact deseription of tho invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to gas engine 'startors and has 'for an object to provide. an auxiliary t'uel reservoir having a. measuru ing chamber which communicates with an auxiliary carburetor which in turn comuninioates with an auxiliary compressed air reservoir` the carburetor boing designed to 'feed a system ot' pipes which load into respective cylinders of the engine, a single manual pressure upon a valve carried by the tuel rcsorvoi' and upon a second valve carried b v the carburetor serving to inject a suit.- ablo. charge into the cylinder which is ready to take the charge, the said charge being under compression and ready to be ignited bv the igniting' mechanism of the engine.
With the above objects in view the iu voution consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter tnlly described and claimed, itl beingl understood that various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claims. v
In the accompanying drawing forming part ot' this specification :mitigure 'l iS a side elevation ot the engine starter. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View through the device. Fig. ,5l is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 4-4t Fig. Q. Fig. l is a cross sectional View taken on the line Ii-l Fig. Q.
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters ot' reference designate similar parts, l() designates a multiple gas engine from cach cylinder of which a pipe '11 leads, there being a check vulve 12 in each pipo to prevent retrograde movement ot' the mixture in the pipe. The pipes communi; cate with a main teed pipe 13 which projects through the dash lit ot' the automobile or like vehicle to which my improved ein gi ne starter may be applied.
The engine starter comprises a luol res-- ervoir l5 which is provided with a globular measuringl chamber lt below the bottom, the measuring chamber having alined inlet and outlet ports 17 and 18 which are controlled by spaced valves it) aud 20 having a common stem 21 which projects through the top ot the reservoir and is equipped with a button QQ, a helical spring 23 being seated on the stem and being confined between the top ot' the reservoir and the button` and normally serving to hold the outlet valve lo closed and the inlet. valve it) open. llv depressing the stem down, tho inlet valve may he closed and the outlet valve opened to allow the measured quautitv ot' t'uol to escape.
A carburetor is situated below and supports the t'uel reservoir, the carlulretercomprising a two picced casing Qll which is sub stautially cylindrical in cross section and is provided with an outlet port Q5, and in the oppositie end with an air inlet port QG, there heilig' a ituel inlet port 27 termed in the [op midway between the outlctand air ports and through which the measuringr chamber discharges its` contents into tho car bnreter by gravity feed. The outlet port ot the carlimrotcr communicates with the common conductor pipe t3, aruba chock valve QS is arranged in the outlet` port to prevent retrogrado movement of the mixture through the port. splash cup 29 is disposed on tho carburetor bottom to catch tho discharge from the measuring` chamber and splash the same baclein order that the tuel maiy he finally divided to insure the proper mixing' o't the tuel with the incoming compressed air. Av screen is 'secured in the bore ol the carburetor between the splash cup and outlet port.
A compressed air tank 3l is secured to the fuel reservoir'by strap brackets' 3Q and :373, a conductor pipo 34 opening through the bottom ot the air reservoir and conuunnieating with the air intake port QG ol the earlnlroter. For letting a` putt' ot' tuunprcssctl air into the carburetor simultaneously with the discharge o'l the luel 'from the measuring chamber into the carburetor, T provid(` a plug valve 35 which is provided with a transverse port llt; adapted to register with the bore ot the pipo` the port being normall)Y held out ot registration with the boro of the pipo bv means of a helical spring il which exerts' an outward pressure upon the plug. rlhe plug is ei'lnipijied with anexternal head or button :ttl by means ol winch the plugmay be pressed against the tension of the spring to establish communication between the compressed air reservoir and carbureter.
The method. of operation is as follows :.The stem 2l is depressed simultaneously with the plug valve 35, a measured quantity of fuel entering thcvcarbureter together with a pu of compressed air, and the mixture then being injected under pressure through the outlet port of the carbureter and into the ifeed pipes 1l.l the mixtures under pressure then entering the cylinder ready to take the charge'. The igniting mechanism of the engine is now actuated to fire the compressed charge and start the engine.
What is claimed, is
1. A gas engine starter including' a fuell reservoir, a measuring tank communicating therewith, and having an outlet port, a carbureter communicating with said outlet port and having a mixtureoutlet port and an air intake port on opposite sides of said measuring v tank outlet port, a compressed air reservoir communicating with said air intake port, means for manually establishing communication between said measuring chamber and Loeaeoi said carbureter, and othei` means for manually establishingcommunication between said air reservoir and said carbureter. a
2. A gas engine starter including a fuel reservoir, a measuring tank having an inlet po'rt opening through the bottom of said reservoir and having an outlet port in vertical alinement with said inlet port, a carbureter communicating with said outlet port, Valves in said inlet and outlet ports,v
a commonmanually controlled stem connecting said valves and servingl to hold one of said Valves closed and the other of said Valves open, said carbureter having a mixture outlet port and an air intake port on opposite sides of said measuring chamber outlet port, a compressed air reservoir connected with said air intake port, and means Jr`or manually controlling communication between. said reservoir and said air intake port.
In ltestimony whereof, I ailix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
' ELwooD o. ALLisoN.
lWitnesses JOHN J. Ron. FANNIE C. OVERTON.
