PROJECTILE- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October '28, 1909. Serial No. 525,067.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL Wmsnn, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Bredeney, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Projectiles, of which'the following is a specification.
This invention relates to projectiles with arrangement for delaying the ignition of the bursting charge.
Delay action devices in which a delay action composition, is introduced into the path of the igniting flame and subjected to the same immediately or through the medium of a reinforcing charge, fail to accomplish their purpose when the igniting flame is extraordinarily strong, because the igniting flame in such cases, induces instantaneous explosion of the delayingsubstance so that the delay action does nottake place, A forcible action of the igniting flame-such as referred to, takes place for example in armor piercing projectiles because the igniting pellet of the impact fuse, in consequence of the hard impact of the PI'OJGCtile against the armor plate, is pierced with extraordinary force. In order to secure the sure occurrence of delay in strongly acting igniting flames, a delay action device has been employed in which the delay of the ignition has been produced without the use of a retarding substance by merely compelling the igniting flame to repeatedly change -its direction. But with delay action devices of this kind, only delays of comparatively short duration are attainable, which under circumstances such, for example, as when shooting against comparatively strong armor plates, are not suflicient.
The present invention has for its purpose to provide a projectile whose bursting charge can be brought to detonation with a delay of long duration, even with strongly acting igniting flames. This purpose 1s attai'ned according to the present invention, by preceding the bursting charge of the projectile with a retarding substance, and by providing between this retarding substance and the space in which the igniting flame is produced, an arrangement for weakening the igniting flame.
.One embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing by way of illustration.
In said drawing, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the base or an armor piercing exploding'shell, and Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2, Fig. l.
The bolt B, which ospries the fulminate pellet A is slidingly mounted in the fuse housing 0. Secured in the fuse housing 0' at a suitable distance above the transport position of the bolt B carries the igniting'needle D. The disk E is provided with a central bore 6 to receive the shank (Z of the igniting needle which enters the disk. Seated against the bolt B is the check spring whose out? dogging rlng F.
turned end supports the The spring abuts withits upper end, the disk E. p
Immediately above the disk E in the fuse housing, is located an attachment piece H provided with a channel it. This serves for conducting the igniting flame of the fulminate pellet A to a retarding substance J. The channel 1 1, takes a zigzag course and terminates in the longitudinal axis of the fuse beneath the retarding substance J..
From the latter, channels a lead to the driving charge K which serves for the ignition of a detonator (not shown) lying in advance of the bursting charge of the pro-. jectile. The fuse fits in a bushing L, which is screwed into the base of the projectile body M.
If the described armor piercing exploding shell impinges an armor plate, the fulminate pellet A will be driven with great violence against the igniting needle D in consequence of the hard impact, so that a very forcible igniting flame results, which by its immediate efl'ect upon the retarding substance,
is a disk E, which Patented May 27, 1913.
would produce an instantaneous explosion.
But since the igniting flame, in striking through the channel k must repeatedly change its direction, its force will be so far reduced that it will cause but a slow burn ing of the retarding substance. The ignition of the bursting charge of the projectile, therefore, follows with a delay corresponding to the dimensions of the retarding substance. l
In order that the igniting flame may not die outin traversing the 'gzag fire channel of comparatively great length, there may be provided, if desired at individual places in the fire channel, small perforated powder bodies of such properties that they will also be momentarily exploded by the weakened igniting flame. The fire flame of the ful minate pellet, receives such strength from these powder bo' ies (reinforcing powder substance) that it will act with certainty in the ignition of the retarding substance J.
It will be,underst(ood that the invention is not restricted to use on armor piercing projectiles. It can be employed with like results in other forms of projectile, in which the fire flame develops such force that its immediate action upon the retarding substance would have the; -efiect of indiicing instantaneous explosi iin.
Having thusidescribed my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In a projectile containing a bursting charge and means for causing an igniting flame, the combination with a retarding substance interposed in the path of the, igniting fiame,'oi means for weakening the igniting flame, said miians being placed between the retarding substance and the place where the igniting flame is produced.
2. In a projectille containing a bursting charge and means for causing an igniting flame, the combination with a retarding substance interposed in the path of the igniting flame, of means for weakening the igniting flame, said means being placed between the retarding substance and the place where the igniting flame is produced and comprising a circuitous channel through which the flame must pass to reach the retarding substance.
3. In a projectile'containing av bursting charge and means for causing an igniting fi'ame, the combination with a retarding subst'ance interposed inthe path of the igniting flame, of means for weakening the igniting fiame, said means being placed between the retarding substance and the place where the igniting flame is produced, and comprising a circuitous channel through which the flame must pass to reach the retarding substance, said circuitous passage being of zigzag form which compels the igniting fiame to repeatedly change its direction.
4.111 a projectile containing a bursting charge and means for causing an igniting flame, the combination with a retarding substance interposed in the pathof the igniting flame, of means for weakening the igniting flame, said means being placed between the retarding substance and the'place where the igniting flame is produced, and comprising a circuitous channel through which the flame must pass to reach the retarding substance and said circuitous passage being provided at suitable points with reinforcing powder substance. m
