To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Sim son, a citizen of the United States, residing at Del Rio, in the county of Valverde and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Fuel- Oil-Controllin-g Valve, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in fuel oil controlling valves, the same being especially designed to be used in connectioniwith the control and supply offuel oil to burners, especially used in connection with steam boilers and more particularlyupon locomotives, the same being provided with means whereby the oil supply pipe may be cleared of obstructions While the burner pipe may also be-cleared of obstructions,-. the valve being so constructed and arranged as to permit of the proper introduction of the desired amount of oil to the burner and at the will of the operator. A further object of the present invention is the provision of a valve adapted to be disposed at the junction between the feed oil pipe and the burner pipe and also the steam in upon locomotives or steam boilers, the same being so constructed and arranged as to readily permit of the desired flow of oil to the burner and for the proper'cleaning of the burner and the fuel oil tubes should the same become clogged.
With the foregoing and other view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described objects in and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise: embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention. In the drawings-Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the valve as applied to the fuel oil conduit, the steam conducting pipe, and the pipe leading to the burner. Fig. 2 is a view on an enlarged scale showing a longitudinal section through the casing with the valve in seated or closed position. Referring to the'drawings, the numeral 1 designates the controlling valve casing which is provided with a threaded nipple 2 for the connection thereto of the valve controlled oil feed pipe 3, the nipple 4 having attached thereto the valve controlled steam admitet pipe, in connectionwith burners used sleeve 8 is a mit ed ting pipe 5, and the nipple 6 having connected thereto the valve controlled burner connecting pipe 7.
Disposed within the casing 1 and removable from one end thereof, is a sleeve 8 which has its lower end seated upon the annular shoulder 9- within the casing 1, said sleeve providing intermediate of its ends and between the adjacent walls of the casing 1, the surrounding chamber 10 which is in communication at all times with the respective oil feed and steam feed pipes. The portion of the sleeve 8 adjacent to the chamber 10 is perforated as at 11 so that the fuel oil may be admitted into the sleeve and to the burner pipe 7 as will presently appear.
In order to lock the sleeve*8 properly in position within the casing 1, the removable cap plug 12, is provided, the same being provided with the concentric recessed portion 13 and one of whose walls is threaded to engage the threaded portion of the annular rim 14 of the casing 1 and thus lock the parts in as sembled position. This plug cap 12 is provided with a reduced end 15 in which is fitted a stufiing box 16 carrying the adjusting member 17, a slidingly mounted valve stem 18 being mounted through the stufiing box and plug 12 and being controlled from a distant point by means of the rod 19. Carried upon the inner end of the valve stem 18 and slidable within the bore of the piston valve 20 having the packing rings 21 therearound and in contact with the inner wall of the sleeve 8, the lower valve seated end 22 of the sleeve 8 'being formed to receive the lower end of the valve 20 as when in the position shown in Fig. 2, so that the fluid fuel or oil adthrough the conduit 3 or the steam admitted through the conduit 5 is held against escape into the burner pipe 7.
With the present form of control valve, it is evident that should the fuel oil conduit 3 become clogged, the valve 20 ma be moved into the position as shown in Fig. 2, and the steam pipe 5 have its valve open so as to permit the steam pressure to enter the casing of the valve and through the chamber 10 into the conduit or pipe 3, thus removing any obstruction from said plpe so as to permit of the proper feeding of the fuel oil to the casing 1. On the other-hand, should the burner tube 7 become clo ged, the valve in the pipe 3 is closed, and the piston 20 is moved to uncover certain of oil is being the perforations 11 to permit of the entrance of the steam fromthe pipe 5 into the sleeve 8'and finally through the end of the sleeve 8 into the valved conduit 7.
Under ordinary conditions, when the fuel supplied to the burner, the valve in the conduit 5 is closed while the valves in the conduits 3 and 7 are open, the piston valve being moved so as to permit the fuel oil to enter the perforations 11 of the sleeve 8 to the left of the plunger 20, said perforations being uncovered by the plunger valve 20, and finally out of the end of the sleeve 8 into the conduit 7 By providing the rod 19, which is operable from adistant point, as for instance when. used in connection with a locomotive and "is operated from the cab thereof, the stem 18 may be operated at will to increase or decrease the flow of the fuel oil through the conduit 7 to the various burners.
, By this construction of control valve, the sleeve 8 is readily held in position and constitutes 1 in reality a guiding casing for the plunger valve 20 and also a removable cas m Within the casing 1v to provide the concentric chamber 10 thereabout intermediate of its ends and adjacent to the perforated portion 11 thereof.
With this construction of valve, the same maybe readily repaired and all parts replacedby simply removing the plug cap 12 when such becomes necessary.
What is claimed is:
1. A valve including a casing provided with oppositely disposed fuel oil and steam admitting !ports and a port for conductin the fuel 0' to a burner, a sleeve mounted removably within the casing and providing a concentric chamber within the casing intermediate of its ends and in communication with the oil and steam ports, said sleeve being perforated adjacent the concentric a plunger valve slidably mounted in said sleeve and for controlling the admission" of, fuel oil to the burner.
. v a dyqmclading a, casing having two oppositely disposed steam and oil ports, respectively, in communication with the casing intermediate of its ends and with a single port in one end of the casing, a sleeve formed with a valve seat fitting within the casing to provide an annular chamber between it and the casing, the portion of the sleeve adjacent to the chamber being perforated to provide communication between the interior of .the sleeve and the oppositely disposed ports, detachable means connected to the casing for holding the sleeve seated, and a plunger valve slidably mounted in thesleeve and operable exteriorly of the easing for eoaction' with the valve seat of the sleeve and for covering and uncovering the perforated portion thereof.
3. The combination with valve controlled fuel oil and burner pipes, of a control valve connecting and forming the junction of said pipes, saidcontrolling valve including a casing provided with -a bore having an enlarged intermediate portion, said bore being open at one end of the casing, a sleeve insertible within the open end and fitting within the reduced portion of the bore of the casing to provide a surrounding chamber in conjunction with the enlarged ortion of the bore, the portion of the sleeve a jacent the enlarged portion of the bore being perforated while the end remote from the open end of the casing is provided with an internal valve seat, a combined stufiing box and sealing cap mounted upon the open end of the casing for locking the sleeve in position, a valve'stem slidably mounted in the cap, and a plunger valve carried by the stem and positioned slidably within the sleeve. ,7
