METAL BUNG.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all wit-0m it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE ElVIIrrINGER,
-Jr., citizen of the United States, residing at Sharon, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Brings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in metal bungs, and is especially intended to be used with metal barrels.

This member 1 has an opening 2, provided with internal screw-threads 3.
A bung-plug 4 is provided with an annular laterally projecting flange 5, which flange has external screw-threads 6, adapted to mesh with the internal threads 3 of the bung member 1. The bung-plug has an annular flange 7 between which and the bung member 1, a suitable packing 8 is placed. Thus far I have described the ordinary metal bung.
My improvement relates to loosely connecting with the flange 7 a substantially U- shaped ring 9, which ring is provided with a projecting arm 10. This arm 10 has a preforation 11 to receive a ring 12 to which one end of a short chain or other flexible member 13 is connected, the other end of the chain being connected to a ring 1 1, which ring passes through an opening 15, formed in an arm 16 projecting from the bung member 1.
This U-shaped ring 9 fits loosely around an annular flange 17 which projects from the edge of the flange 7 of the bung-plug, thus permitting the plug to be turned freely within the ring 9, so that the plug may be screwed into position in the member 1, or unscrewed therefrom. When the plug is unscrewed, it is prevented from being lost by means of a connecting chain 13 between the plug and the bung member 1.
I am aware that it is not new to attach a bung-plug by means of a ring, but so far as I am aware, it is new to construct this ring in the manner hereinafter described in order to make a strong and permanent con nection of the parts, which is necessary in devices of this kind that are subjected to such rough usage in the hands of persons who are not interested in the barrels.
My improved ring is made from sheetmetal and stamped into blank form, such as shown in Fig. 3. This blank a is provided with a lateral arm Z) and is slitted along the sides of the arm at the point 0, a distance equal to the lateral flange cl. The blank a is stamped into cupshape forming the flange (Z and then the opening 6 cut therein, which forms an annular ring of substantially L-shape in cross-section having projecting therefrom an arm I), as shown in Fig. 4. The bungplug 4 is placed within this ring, as shown in Fig. 4, and the edge 7 doubled around the peripheral flange 17 of the plug, by means of a suitable die thus forming a band which is U-shape in crosssection, as shown in Fig. 2 and forming a secure but loose fastening of the band to the plug. The arm 6 is doubled so that its ends 9 lap over the peripheral flange 17, as shown in Fig. 2, and this arm has previously been provided with openings h and so doubled that the said openings register to form the opening 11, through which the ring 12 is afterward passed. A ring connection of this construction cannot be broken away from the plug or sprung out of contact therewith, thus providing a sure loose connection by means of which the plug can be connected with the bung member 1 and at the same time readily screwed into and unscrewed from the bung member.
To furnish convenient means for turning the plug into and out of position, I provide four upwardly extending studs or projections 19, the outer surfaces 20 of which form a right angle, thus providing means by which an ordinary spanner or adjustable wrench can be used, and these studs are separated to form passages 21, through which a bar may be passed and used to operate the plug, and the inner sides of the studs are beveled, as shown at 22 to permit the use of a socket-form of wrench between the studs. By means of this construction, practically any type of wrench may be used, and if a wrench is not convenient, then a bar can be used to operate the plug.
No claim is made herein for the arrange; ment and construction of the wrench lu s 19 and 20 on the outer face of the plug 3, as this will form the subject-matter of a divisional application.
, Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a bung-plug, of a ring. U-shaped in crosssection and inclosing the periphery of the plug within the U thereof, said ring carrying means for attaching a connecting member thereto.
2. The combination with a bung-plug havinga peripheral flange, of a ring U-shaped in cross-section, the U of the ring receiving the said peripheral flange, the ring provided with means for attachment of a connecting member.
3. In a plug the combination of a bung member, a bung plug, a ring U-shaped in cross section, the U loosely inclosing the periphery of the bung-plug, the ring and vthe bung member having projecting arms,
and a flexible connection between the said arms.
4. A ring for bung-plugs, formed from a blank of sheet metal into a substantially U-shaped ring in cross section to inclose the periphery of the plug and provided with an integral projecting arm for a connecting member.
5. A ring for bung-plugs made of sheet metal substantially U-shaped in cross-section to receive the periphery of the plug, the ring having an integral projecting arm doubled to form means for a connecting member.
6. A ring for bung plugs, made of sheet metal substantially U-shaped in cross-section to loosely receive the periphery of the plug, the ring having an integral laterally projecting arm intermediately doubled so that the free end of the arm forms a part of the U of the ring and also serves to receive a connecting member.
