Description
intell tatee .JOEL WOOD, OF MARTINSVILLBL OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 106,244, dated August 9, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OEL WOOD, of Martinsville, in the county of' Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful improved Earth-Closet; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, sufficient to enable those skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing lmaking part of this s peccation, in which- Figure l is a top view of my improvement.
Figure 2 is a central vertical section.
The nature of my invention consists4 in the arrangement of a cut-olf in the trough leading-from the earth-hopper, said cut-oi being operated by theseat in such a manner` that, when a person rises from the seat, a quantity of earth from the hopper is deposited under the seat.
The front vportion of the seat'A is hinged or pivoted, as shown in fig. 1, /so as to allow the rear portion to rise and fall.
Under the rear portion of the seat are spiral or other springs s, which tend to keep the seat inclined at au angle of about eight or ten degrees from a horizontal position.
'lhe hopper Bis formed with an extension or trough, b, projecting downward from the bottom, and 'entering the rear side of the box or casing below the seat.
Ou the front side` of the trough b is a lng, b', in
of the seat is a staple,' 1, which engages with a s lot in the long arm of' the lever C.
When the closet is not occupied `the parts are inthe position shown in fig. 2.
When a person sits. down on'the seat the staple a .depresses the long arm of the lever O, forcing the lower door E into the trough, and withdrawing the upper door D, allowing the earth to pass from -the y hopper B and iill the portion of the trough above the door E. On rising from the seat the springs srl-aise the rear portion, and the staple a elevates the long arm of the lever C, withdrawing the lower door E, and allowing the earth to fall from the trough b, and forcing in the door D to cnt off' any further flow of earth from the hopper until the seat is again pressed down. \Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
The combination of the seat A, lever C, doors I) and E, and hopper B, arranged and operating as shown and described.
