IMPROVEMENT IN IRON FRAMES POR PIANOS;

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE STEGK, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented au Improved Iron Frame for Upright `Piano-Fortes and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being,r had to the accompanying drawing;- making part of this specification,

Figure 1 being,r a front elevation of the iron frame of an upright piano-forte, constructed with my iinprorement.

Letters A A represent the upright braces of the frame.

B, the bottoni cross-bar or rail thereof.

G, the top bar o1 rail.

C, the curved brace.

l) E F, projecting ribs on the back side of the fra-me, to which the sounding-hoard M is attached.

S, the rest-plank.

The first feature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the braces A A,.with which the strings run parallehin such a manuer'that one-halt' of the width or depth thereof, nearly or exla'ctly, shall project outward, beyond the front surface of the parts B C G, over which the strings are stretched, or beyond the plane of the strings, and the other halt' of theirwidth shall sink behind or beneath said surface or plane, as shown in g. 2, whereby the tension of the strings is caused to be midway ot' the braces, and has no tendency to bend or warp the. frame either one way or the other. i

By this construction I obtain a frame that will not warp nor bend, which yet is very light and simple of construction, and which needs no back-stays, frame, nor braces, as required by the usual modes of coustruction.

The second feature ot' my invention consistsin a horizontal or transverse rih, N, formed on the back of the upper cross-bar or rail G of the frame, situated under the rest-planks, and projecting outward, beneath and near the same, substantial] y as represented. rlhis rib strengthens the frame laterally, and prevents transverse warping.

\Vhat I claim as my invention,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-f rlhe construction of the iron frame of piano-fortes with braces A A A A A, so formed and arranged that the strain of the strings shall have no tendency toI bend or warp them in either direction, substantially as herein specified. j

Also, in combination with the foregoing, the transverse rib N, projecting from the back ot" the bar or rail G, substantially as and t'or the. purpose herein set forth.
