Patented llfiay Ltd, 11913.
Application filed September a5, 1912. Serial No. mama.
such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to construo'. and use the same.
This invention relates to a device for opening condensed milk cans, and its object is to provide an opener which can also be used for the purpose of scaling the openings produced until it is desired to again pour liquid from the can.
It will be understood that large quantities of condensed milk and other liquids are sold in cans, which cans are usually opened by punching two holes therein at opposite sides of the can. When the liquid is poured from the openings in the can it becomes smeared around the opening more or less and if allowed to stand around for any length of time, flies light upon it and thus poison the product.
l/Vith this invention a device for covering up the openings to prevent flies from having access thereto and to prevent dirt from falling therein, thus keeping the product clean.
fin the drawings in "which the same nu moral of reference is applied. to thesame is provided portion throughout the several views, Fig
ure 1 18 a side elevationof a can having this opening device applied thereto, Fig. 2 1s a plan view of the device attached to the can,
Fig 3 1s a plan view of the device attached to the can and showing the two openings covered when the can is to be set away, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the opener.
The numeral 1 indicates the can, which may be of any desired size, to which the opener is applied. The opener comprises a spring 2 having a pointed punch 23 secured thereto above which is a small knob 4: to
punch the punch 3 through'the metal of the can. The spring 2 pivotally secured to a plate 5, which plate is provided with ends 6 and 7 to secure the opener releasably hooked a to the can top. In order to remove the opener from the can top, the hooked end 7 is provided with an extension 8 to act as a handle. The plate 5 and spring 2 are both plvotally secured to a cover plate 9. This cover plate has openings 10 and 11 therein and has a portion of its edge bent down as shown at 12 and 13 to hold it centrally in place on thee-an top, and also to aiiord means whereby the cover may be rotated over the openings produced in the can. .The manner of operating the device is indicated in l igs. 2 and 3. I
It will be seen that the cover plate 9 is releasahly attached to the can top ll'Y means of the bar 5 and holes are punched in the can adjacent the openings 10 and 11 oi the cover )late. The punch is then removed.
from tie holes in the can by the spring. When it is desired "to set the can away for a time, the cover plate is rotated a small amount: as indicated in Fig. 3, so that both of the openings produced in the can are com plctely covered, thus preventing dirt and flies from having access thereto. When it.
is desired to use the product in the can the cover plate may he returned to the position iudicatoi'l in Fig. 2 and if the procuct has gumnied up the openings therein, it may he readily cleaned by inseriing the punch 3 in each opening.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Lctlei-s Patent oi. the United States, is asfollows:
1. In a can opener and closure therefor a cover plate having notches cut therein, means to secure the cover plate to a can, and a punch pivotally mounted u on said cover plate so that it may he movec ti) a position adjacent each of the notches in said cover plate, substantially as described.
2. In a can opener and closure therefor, a
cover plate having notches at the edgesthereof, means to hold the same centrally with respect to a can upon which it may e my hand this lfith day of September AID.
