JIG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
VPatented May 1 3, 1913.
Application led February 6, 1913. Serial No. 746,640.
To (/.N fui/0m it may concern.'
Be it known that lv, llwunv l. Alfrnwst a citizen ot' the United States, residing at ollinsville, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented a new and uset'ul Jig, of which the following is a specification.
The device herein disclosed is a structure adapted to be employed for controlling the passage of coal and other n'linerals, and l'or controlling the passage ot rc't'use `from coal and minerals, through a One object of the invention is to provide novel means for controlling` the fate o1 the jig.
Another object o'tl the invention is lo provide novel means 'for adjusting the lloat.
It is within the scope of the invention to improve generally and to enhance the utility et', devices of that type to which the present invention appertains. y In the drawings :--l*`igure 1 shows, in vertical longitudinal section, a portion loli a equipped with theregulating device constitiltingr the subject matter ol this applica` tion; Fig. 2 is a top plan ot the structure hercina't'ter described, the box ol the jig,bcing omitted; and Fig. 1 is a transverse section of the float. p
In the drawings; the nlnneral 1 indicates the box of a jig, comprising a trame 2 upheld by supports $1. Verlieally stepped butfle plates L1 and 5 are mounted on the trame 2 and superposcd upon the lrame '.2 is a deck which may loe a screen ti, the screen (l at. one end terminating upon the baille plate #1, to deline an opening 7 at one end of the jic.
Superposed upon one end ot' the l'rame 2 is a supporty 8 which, as shown, is a hollow casting. A gate t) extends across the opening 7 and is united by hinges l() to the support Curved connections 11 and 1L are secured at one end to the gate t), the connections 11 passing through a tloat 15 which preferably is 'fashioned from wood. 'lhe connection l2 is provided with au enlargement 11' which bears against the upper tuce ofijhe lloat 15,
' and projecting rearwardly t'routI tht'enlargement 1G is a handle llt whereby the tloat 15 may be moved manually. 'lhe connections 11 are provided with abutments 1T engaging the forward or upper face of the tloat 15. A bolt and nut connection [Si passes through the enlargement lt and through the float 15 and serves to unite the float with the connection 12. Nuts 1S) are applied to the free ends of the t, i luections 11 and bear against the under face of the lloat. 15 tohold the. lloat against the abutments 1T. Referring to Fig. 3 it will be observed that lhe lloat l5 is slotted transversely to receive the ends ol the connections 1l and to receive. the bolt 1H which passes through the connection 12, the slots being indicated at '21).
ln practical operation, presnpposing that the structure is to be employed t'or washing and cleaning coal, the box is filled with water and the coal is direct-ed upon the screen t3. The rel'use in the coal, being heavier than the coal, will move along the screen 1'. beneath the coal and will raise the float 15, the float serv-ing to raise the, gate wlufreupon tlie reluse will pass downwardly through the opening 7. the float 15, returning the gate t) gravitationally to the proper position. When ore and other heavy minerals are passed upon the screen the min erals` being heavier than the rel'nse, will pass along the screen t and operate the lloat l5 and the gate fl, the ore passing downwardly through the opening 7 and the relatively light' retnse passing across the gate t) and out ot the end ot the structure. "lhc hallle plates l and 5 serve to control the movement ot' the water with respect to the float 15 and serve to prevent a rush o'li water against the float. l`hc connections 11 and l2 which lie in the slots 20 all'ord an adjustable mounting for the tloat- 15 so that the lloat may I nove transversely. This transverse movement of the float 15 serves to regulate the distance between the float and the opening T, and because. the supports l1 and 2 are curved, the gate when moved transversely, is adjusted vertically with rey spect to the screen (i. as well.
Ilaving thus described the invention what is claimed isn-- 1. ln a a frame having an opening; a deck terminating adjacent the opening; a hinged gate extended across the opening; a float rigidly connected with the gate and located above the deck and at an acute angle to the deck.
l in a a frame having an opening; a deck terminating adjacent the opening; a hinged gate extended across the opening; a lloat connected with the gate and located above the deck; and a baille located below the deck und below the tloat and adapted to protect the tloat t'rom currents.
3. .ln a jig7 a 'frame havingan opening;
a deck terminating adjacent the Opening; a hinged gate extended across the Opening; a curvedsupport secured to the gate; a float located above the deck and mounted upon the support for adjustment transversely of the support, the curved form of d the support serving to adjust both the distance of the oat from the deck and the dis tance of the oat from the opening when flo the float is moved. along the support; and
means for holding the oat in adjusted postions upon the support.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have .hereto affixed my signature 'in the presence of two Witnesses.
