UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM W. SINGER, OF OLIVIA, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD 'IO LA RSON- SINGER COMPANY, OF OLIVIA, TEXAS.
SEWING-MACHINE.
To all whom, t may concern Be it known that I, VILLIAM W. SINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olivia, in the county of Calhoun, State of TeXas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to sewing machines, and has for its principal object the provision of a device of the character named which will cut or trim the edges of two pieces of cloth during the time that said edges are being stitched together' by the needle.
To this end the invention, briefly described, comprises a fixed and a movable blade pivoted together, the latter blade being operated by the movements of the needle bar, and a feed roller for drawing the stitched and trimmed cloth through the machine.
The preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which corresponding parts are designated by the same reference numerals throughout the several views.
Of said drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of a sewing machine equipped with the improved cutting attachment. Fig. 2 is an enlarged horizontal section taken on the line 2.-2 thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken through the machine arm. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view, illustrating the manner in which the cutting blades are mounted.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 10 designates the table of the machine, and 11 the arm thereof. rl`he drive wheel 12 is secured to the drive shaft 13 being rotated from a treadle lll by the drive connection 15, in the usual manner.
The shaft 13 which extends at one end into the housing 16 is provided at such point with a crank portion 17 to which the needle bar 18 is pivoted, the needle bar having the major portion thereof disposed within the housing.
The cutting element which forms a feature of this invention comprises relatively movable and stationary blades 20 and 21 Specification of Letters Patent.

pivoted together in scissors fashion and disposed transversely of the table 10, the first mentioned blade being connected to the needle bar by an angle rod 19 having an enlarged head on the blade engaging arm, provided with an elongated slot 19', a pin 20 being mounted on the blade and working therein. The other arm of the rod 19 is connected to the needle bar, which latter thus serves to operate the cutting element. The blade 21 is connected with and is carried by the housing 1G. It will thus be apparent that during the rotation of the drive shaft, and the consequent reciprocation of the needle bar, the cutter will be operated to trim the edges of the two pieces of cloth stitched together by the movement of the needle carried by the needle bar, the action of the stitching mechanism and the cutter being thus simultaneous.
The invention further contemplates the provision of a feed device for drawing the stitched and trimmed clot-h through the machine, and to this end there is disposed in front of the housing a roller 22 attached to a horizontal pin or shaft Q3 journaled in a bearing upon the table 10, one end of said shaft having secured thereto a grooved pulley 211 connected by a belt 25 with a larger pulley 2G driven by a crank connection 27 with the treadle. This roller 22 serves to keep the cloth substantially taut between the needle and said roller and thus renders more eflicient and accurate the operation of the cutting mechanism. The roller 22, as will be understood is set sulliciently close to the surface of the table to permit its surface, which is preferably roughened to engage the cloth.
The upper face of the table l0 is provided with grooves 29 and 30 in which are mounted scaled bars 31 and 32 respectively which serve to provide an eflicicnt and ready means for obtaining desired measurements of the cloth being operated upon by the machines.
What is claimed is:
The combination with a sewing machine of a stitching mechanism, including a housing and a reciprocating needle bar movable tin the housing, of a scissors blade, a vertical extension on said blade attached tothe housing and holding the blade spaced from the table of the machine, a second blade pivoted at its inner extremity to the heel of In testimony whereof, I mlx my signathe rstd blade, :t pin on said second blade ture, n presence of two Witnesses.
nterme ate its ends, an angle roc havin? d one arm secured t0 the needle bar and the VILLAM WV SINGER? other'` formed with an enlarged head pro- Vtnesses:
vided with a slot and the pin engaging in J. CHERRY,
Said slot. H. C. INNIS.
