cnonen Pl BUTTSOV, or ceramic, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR or ONE-THIRD 'ro cIIA'RILEs MATSEN AND ONE-THIRD HEIQMAN P. ERB, bl CHIQA'GO,=ILLINOIS;
To'all whom-it mcy concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon' P. Borrsov, av citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, rind State of lllijnois, have. invented certain new Itist'lie object of the present invention to create a motor-boat somewhat after the typeof a hydroplane, wherein the major portion of the existing pressure eisertodagai'nst' the passage of the boat througli-the'waterwillonly by the construction I of the hull of the boat, but also by the pres.
be eliminated, not
' sure of the water against tlie propel-ler' and therudder. I
With the above and otherohjects in view,-
this invention consists in the'construct-ion, p
combination and --.irrangementlof parts,- all as hereinafter more fully describedmlsimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein i Figure 1 is a top plain view of s. boat constructed in accordance with the present,- hi
vention, Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, parts being broken away for the purposes of illustration, 3 is an elevation looking at the bow of the boat, Fig. 4is a per-spective view of one otthepontoons, Fig. 5 'is a verticalsection taken along the csted"by lines.5-5.5"5 of Fig. 4, 6 is a vertical section illustrating the cooperati'on'snd err: sgement of the steering mechanism. Y l
Reference bein the drawings, 10 indicates the hull-of a bout of the typecommpnly displacement in the water, said hullbeing constructedbf metal with compressed air compartments or tanks placed therein ,at suitable localities.
hull 10 is also p which tapers from thereof, said keel;
Secured to the boat upon each side of the" lane ndi Fig.
had inore particularly to known as a. shallow hull boat, which 18 adapted to have little] The hull 1g is provided with a; cockpit ll adjacent to'the stern which is partially covered by the lent-icular wind shield 12, said wind shield being provided with suitable windows or ports '13; The
wind shield 12 is a. standard -or support 15, Silld supports converging to -a.'-' bearing 16 and constituting .;1 support for said beaming. The how 10 has a pedestal l7 mounted mounted thereon which operates against the air todrive the boatrjj v .Ajlenticularbrace orlsupport 253s mounted upon each side of the-"bearing '13 and .fponstitute -braces forsaidbearing an supports and retaining elements-for the guide 'ontoons which will hereinafter be more fully described. Eachlenti culai' brace or Isuppo'rt 25 is provided witha vertical sleeve v being formed integrally with respectv to said braces 25.f I

rotatably mounted'in the adjacent sleeve 26, said rod being retained in its opei'ii-tivposition-by the screw 35 which is threaded into theupper terminal of the rod.34, when the same is in its operative position, as illustrated in Fig. 5. From this construction it will readily be seen thateach pontoon is' pelling shaft 20 is mounted in the 'bearings mo.unte d upon the rear" terminal thereof,
overwhich operates. the driving chain 22, said chain being connected with the motor 23 locatedin the cockpit 11. Theiorward 1 terminal ofvthe shaft .20.,hefsla propeller 24 also hese Pontoons" are of'hollow-n 'etalllic' which contact with the f a. .substen v the decks of,

saidupright carrying a. bearing 19' .at its 26 st thejlower terminelythereof, s'aid sleeve l'elogrammaticin formh is' mounted at the A vertical rod difis fgrnied ip'on egich bar r 31 directly 0ver the' pi 'otal pin' 32 and is provided with,a movement about a horizontal pivot which will permit the pontoons to accommodate themselves to irregularities and swells upon the. surface of the water; and also said pontoons are provided with a movement about a vertical pivot which per mits the pontoons tobe swung for the purposes ofsteering the boat,'the vanes or keels 28 creating the necessary guiding pressure against the water.
The bow 10 is pierced'bv an opening upon each side thereof, said openings being the terminals of a passage 37' extending through the bow 10. A vertical shaft 38 is mounted centrally in the passage 37 and h s the sprocket wheels 39, 40 and 41 mounted thereon. The sprocket wheel 39-is connected by means of a chain 42 which embraces the same, and the rods 43 attached thereto,
to the chain 44, which cooperates with a sprocket wheel carried by the steering shaft 45. This steering shaft is operated by a wheel 46 for the purpose of rotating the shaft 38by means of the gear 39 and the chains 42 and 44 and the rods 43. The vertical section 30 of, each inner angle bar 29 is provided with a 'pair of eyes 47,to which are connected the steering rods 48. These steering rods are connected to the ends of the chains 49 at their free terminals, said chains operating about the sprocket wheels and 41. Bythis construction, it will readily be seen that, as the wheel-46 is rotated, the-shaft 38 will likewise be rotated, swinging the pontoons 27 in like direction in order that the boat-may be steered in either direction, dependent upon the direc- .tion in which theipontoons are swung. v In order to provide a means whereby the momentum of the boatmay be impeded, a shaft 50 is arranged transversely ad] acent to the sternof the boat and has an orificed blade 51 secured. ri idly thereto at each terminal thereof. A nt lever 52 is secured to the shaft 50 and is connected to a link- 53 which is interposed between the lever 54 and the bent lever 52. By the movement of the lever 54 in a forward direction, it will beseen that the blades 51 will be swung downwardly, creating a bearing surface for the water, which will create sufiicientresistance to im ede and stop the motion of the boat.
In or er to automatically raise the blades 51, a bracket 55 is mounted on one side of the boat adjacent to the gunwale thereof adjacent to the shaft 50 and has one terminal of a spring 56 secured thereto, the opposite terminal of said spring being attached to the adjacent blade 51, the tension of s id coil spring 56 normally retaining the blades in 60 an elevated or horizontal position.- Having described my invention, what I clann as new and desire to secure by Letters Talent, is:' 1. The combination with a boat; of a ver- '65 tical standard carried on the prow.of said b'oat; two diverging legs dependinglfrom the top of said verticalstandardta vertical sleeve on the lower end of each of said diverging legs; a p'lurality of ontoons; angle bars arranged upon the dec toons; a bar pivoted between the angle bars s of said ponof each pontoon having the forward terminal thereof curved in order that the forward terminal of each pontoon may swing up ward 1y; and rods carried bv suld bars swiveled in the sleeves aforesaid.
2. The combination with a boat; of a ver'- t-ical 'sta'ndard carried on the prow of said boat; ,tw'o diverging legs depending from so the top of said vertical standard; a vertical sleeve on the lower end of each Ofsaid diverging legs; a plurality of ontoons; angle bars arranged upon the dec 8 of said )on- 'toons; a .bar pivoted between the angle ars of each pontoon having the forward terminal thereof curved in order that the forward vterminal of each pontoon may swing upwardly: rods carried by said bars swiveled in the sleeves aforesaid; and guiderods connected with certain of said angle bars for steering saidpontoons.
3; The combination with a boat; of a frame mounted thereon; vertical, sleeves SL" cured to said frame; a plurality of pontoons; angle bars arranged upon the decks of said pontoons; a bar pivoted between the angle bars of each pontoon having the forward terminal thereof curved in order that the forward terminal of each pontoon may- 1C0
