Specification of Letters Patent.
. Application filed Mey 16, 1911.
. "atented M ay 13, l 9i 3. serial No. 627,583. i
To all 107mm 'it may concern.'
lle it known that I, lVlLLniM A. PATN'I'ER, of' Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chemical Fire-Extinguishere, of which the followingis a specification.
An objectot' my inventionis to provide a new and improved chemical fire extinguisher ot simple and etlicient construction, particuhu'ly designed to meet the requirements to which apparatus or' this; class are subjected.
A further object of my invention is to provide a new and improved separable cage or bottle holder adapted to permit the insertion and removal of the acid containing bottle or receptacle through a side oit' the cage.
In the accompanying drawing, which Figure l is a central vertical sectional view of a lire extinguisher embodying,r my invention, the section beingr taken on line I--`I o't' Fig. 3; Fig. 2, a `vertical sectional view similar to Fig. l showingthe extinguisher inverted; Fig. 3, a plan with the cap omitted; Fig. 4, an enlarged vertical sectional view and Fig. 5, a perspective view oil" the cage or i bottle holder.
Referring` to the drawing, l designates a casing or tank of the portable ire extinguisher,l preferably made ol metal. The tank is provided with a metallic neck 2 secured to the upper portion ot' the tank in any suitable manner; said neck, illnstrated, beingf formed with externally disposed threads B'and inwardly projecting lugs 4;.
5 designates the usual screw cap or cover` adapted to be placed on the neck .2 and have its threaded portions 6 in engagement with the threads of the metallic neck.
7 designates a gasket interposed between the cap and the upper end ot' the neck.
Characteristic and importanti features ot the present. invention coxrun'i.-iA the bottle holder or cage per .vc and the;l eombimition and arrangement of parts (constituting my heads QL of Slightly greater improved .tire extinguisher.
The cage or bottle holder. ae illustrated constitutes a seat for the acid containing` bottle l5.
1G designates side rode or members having their ends entered in the respective openings 9 and 12; these rods are secured to lho `top and bottom members and rigidly connect said members.
Coiipcratinp; with the parts just dcaoribcd, l provide a cage closure or bottle retaining device 17 cinnprisingr, in the form illustrated, a central yokiA portion 1.8 preferably made oi two parts with the outer ende lt) of said parts embracing' the side rods ot the cage. The device 17 is provided with two upwardly project-ineY rods 520, said rods Q0 are entered in and adapted for vertical movement in the apertured lugs l0 of the top member. Rode 20 are provided with diameter than the openings ot lugs l() and support the closure device in the desired operative 'position when. the parts are aseemiilcd.
22 designates a gravity stopper for the bottle l5, and, v sinned to rest upon the upper end of the neck o said bottle 15 when the apparatus is; in an upright position; when the apparatus is inverted as shown by Fig. 2, the stopper falls againstv a seat 23 of the cap To remove the acid containing bottle 15 for the purpose of replacing the same or refilling the bottle, the cap 5 is removed from the extinguisher, thus permitting the separable cage together with the bottle to be littcdtree oil the apparatus and placed in a vertical position. 'l'he constructicin of the cage is such that it will stand alone and can be maintained in an upright position during the act of removing;i or inserting a bottle. While in this poeitiou, the bottle l5 may be readily removed from the cage by raising the bottle retaining or closure as shown by Fig. l, is ded' 'and a vertically movabl l top member vprovided 15,. l connecting the top having supporting means, l neck, of
K holder supported by the neck independently seated upon the neck, a bottom mem -necting the top and a vertically movable cage .ing means `for limiting Ament and cooperating withthe side mem er,
i device' 17 verticall upon the side rods into the position as in icated by Fig. 5, and the bottle me thenberemoved. I
What claim is l. -ire extinguisher ca'ge comprising a ton member provided with an apertnred portion, a bottom member, a side member connecting the topanti bottom members,
e closure device cooperating with the Sider-member and having an upright member entered in the aper tured portion of the top member.
ZA. re extinguisher cage comprising .a with an yapertured bottom member," a side member and ,bottom members, and a vertically movable cage closuredevice comprising a yoke portion having an end thereof in engagement with .the side member and eprovided with an upright membern enter in the apertured portion of the top member.
portion.,- a
3. A. fire extinguisher cage comprising av top member provided with apertured lugs,
a bottom member, side members connecting the top and bottom. members, cally movable closure device havin@r upright members entered.- n the apertured lugs of the top member. f
45:. In e lire extinguisher, the combination with a' casing, of an 'externally threaded neck therefor, said neck provided 'with supporting means, a .ca secured to the neck, a separable removable ottle holder or cage supported by ythe neck and comprisingl a top member, a bottom member, a side member connecting the top and bottom members,- and a vertically movable cage closure evice having means coacting with the cap and the side member.
5. In a fire extinguisher, a neck therefor a .ca `or the am independent movable bottle ot the cap and comprising astop member su porting er, a slde member conclosure device havg lts Vertical in vee. A separable removable twee-n1 guieher cage having an tcp memholder supporte and a vertitop f the openings of retaining member means of the bottom members, and
Loenen@ ber, an annular bottom member, a side mem: ber connecting the top and bottom members, and a vertically movable cage closure evice cooperating with the side memberstor retaining thebottle. within the cage, said closure devic'e provided with avstop mem 7. ln a fire extinguisher, a neck therefor having supporting means, a cap for the neck, of a removable bottle holder supported by the neck independently ot the cap and comprising a top member,r a bottom member, a side member connecting the top and bottom members, and a vertically mov`- able closure device cooperating with the side member for retaining a bottle within the age, said closure device having a stop member adapted to coact with the cap.
'8. Ina re extinguisher, a neck vtherefor' having supporting means, a ca for the neck, of a se arable remove le bottle by the neck independently .o the cap and compri. g an upper ring member ,having rod vreceiving openings, a bottom ring 'member having rod` receiving openingsin line with the openings ofthemember, rodsentered in the openings of the top and bottom members and con'- necting said members, and ay vertically mov-- able bottle retaining member comprising a' yoke portion having gagement with the rods. 9. A tire extinguisher prsing an upper member having rod ceiving openings and iapertnred lugs,- tom member having `rod receiving openings in lineivith the openings of the top memberV and formed with a flange'having a vertically extending projection, rods'entered in the top and bottom membot-tle holder comrethe endsv thereof in enbers and; connecting said members, and. a.v
