ROPE FOR HAULAGE AND OTHER PURPOSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 6,1913.
` new and useful Improvement in Ropes for Haulage and other Purposes, which improve ment is fully set forth in the following speciiication.
This invention has for its object to provde an improved wire rope having upon it knobs or bosses. The rope is especially useful .for raising heavy objects.
In the accompanying illustrative drawings, Figure 1 shows a portion of a rope with a boss in the course of manufacture, and Fig. 2 shows the same portion of a rope with the boss complete.
a is a wire rope to .be provided at various points with bosses. For this purpose the strands are first loosened, as shown in Fig. 1, the hempen core being preferably removed at these points. Iron or other suitable pins b are then inserted between the strands and the swells thus obtained are laced in a mold of the size of the boss it 1s desired -to obtain and molten metal is then run in.
The mold is preferably of ovoid shape and the iron pins b are referably first tinned or coated with a metaadapted to adhere both to the ins and the metal run in. The bosses thus obtained are all of equal size and of regular shape and, as the cast metal penetrates between the strands and'all around the pins, thus impregnating the heterogeneous mass and rendering it impossible for the bosseswto become loose and slip upon the rope.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is:
1. A wire ro e provided with knobs or bosses formed o metal pins inserted between the strands of the rope, whose projecting ends are surrounded with a mass of metal substantially as described.
2. The method of manufacturing a wire rope provided with knobs or bosses which consists in looseningthe strands, removing the core, inserting projecting pins between said strands and casting a mass of metal around said projecting pins, substantially as described.
3. The method of manufacturing a wire rope provided with knobs or bosses, which consists in loosening the strands, removing the core, inserting projecting pins between said strands, said pins being providedwith a coating ot' metal adapted to adhere to the pins and, finally, casting a mass of metal around said projecting pins, said metal being such as will adhere to the coating metal of the pins.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
