IMPROVEMENT IN RAILWAY CAR-COUPLING.

the Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I Sonox O. CAMPBELL, of Gent-retown, in the county of Cole and State of Missouri,

have invented a new and improved Oar-Coupling; and

I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad tothc accomrnmying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved ear-couplin".

Figure 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to improvement in car-couplings, such as are used without a link, and consists in the-construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter described.

A A, in the drawing, are two coupling-boxes of suitable size and shape, made of cast-iron or other suitable material. The frol'lt'endol' each has two or 'more tbrward projecting plates, to a, with rounded -1'ront edges, the spaces between. every two plates, (1,

being just large enough to admit one such plate from the opposite box,'as shown.

In the front partof each box A. is arranged a lever, B, which is fitted through slots of the box and held down by a projecting pin, 5, so that it may swing in the slot.- 7

Its horizontal upper arm contains a sliding couplingpin, 0.

The lever can swing back on its'pivot, I), and is thus swung back previous to coupling, while the pins are drawn up as far as possible.

When two boxes, A A, are pushed together to have their plates to interlocked like fingers, the lever B of the higher box will be pushed into a vertical position tomake its pin 0 drop, while the other lever B willj be held back by the upper plate (a of the higher box,

as shown in fig. 1.

The pin G of the higher box will drop through up ertures of all the plates A, and will therefore effectually lock the boxes together.

This coupling can be used without a link, but may also be worked together with the same if desired.
